After the Lift Kit…What to do with the Spare Tire?

I had the Westcott Lift Kit installed along with 295/70/18 Toyo AT3’s and I couldn’t be more pleased. Now I’m scratching my head on what to do with the spare. My plan is to sell the stock Michelins along with the new spare tire. Will a 295/70/18 fit in that same spot under the truck? Should I get a used 285/70/18 that may fit? Anyone that has dealt with this issue, I’m all ears!

 

295/70R18 will fit, you just might have to bend the guides or remove them completely. But many have fit 35s under there pretty easily.

 

If you have stock rear shackles. You’ll be able to fit a 35” no problem. Just remove the metal guides with a cut off wheel.

Question just like these small spares that are added to other cars. Between the stock size and 285 or 295 if you get a flat is it really going to hurt to drive the truck home?

 

As long as you aren’t using 4wd, the stock spare will be fine to get you home, or at least to a tire shop. But a matching spare is obviously ideal.

 

Depends on far home is. For me, I have the Powertrax Grip Pro differential so I would not want to drive too far with mismatched sizes.

 

I agree with both. Just curious because I have 285’s on my Pro and I’m not changing the spare size. As long as it gets you home that’s the way I look at it. Or even if your traveling you should be able to make it to a tire place.

 

I wouldn't worry about if you have the factory diffs. Just a little annoying to drive.

 

Is the spare tire wheel a +60 offset? Curious if just putting a bigger tire would work in the event you needed to use it for a front tire…I guess you could always switch a rear to the front and run the spare on the rear if offset is a clearance issue at the front

 

I think you would want to run the smaller/different wheel size in the front (not in 4x4) to avoid messing up the rear diff.

 

that seems to makes sense when running a smaller diameter tire height…but this makes the spare offset even more important if I want to run a full size (matched height) spare. Im running 35’s on +10 offset wheels which provides plenty of clearance with stock UCA…trying to determine if I can just get a 35” tire for the factory spare, but if it is a +60 offset, then I potentially run into UCA clearance at the front

 

Yeah if you're running a matching spare, you'll probably need to get a matching wheel. Most tire shops won't mount a 12.5 wide on the OEM wheels, let alone the spare wheel. If you didn't want to replace the wheel itself, you could grab a 285/75R18 assuming you have an 18" spare and be pretty close on the diameter.

Mine looks about the same with a 285/75-18 and Toytech shackles. You will need to take your time guiding it up there.

 

I see what you're saying on the offset, I was just thinking of the diff. I'm going to 35's in a couple weeks and plan on putting one of my old 295/70/18 on the spare wheel, but now I might just get a matching spare wheel to match everything close as I can other than the tire size...

 

This is exactly what I have going on too clearance-wise. Coachbuilder +3 and 35x12.50 Toyo's. How long have you had yours like this and has there been any contact that you can tell? I'm worried about at full droop. I'm planning on taking some GoPro video of it this weekend with some light offroading to see if it makes contact. Side note, those of us with the TRD Pro exhaust have to fight that also raising the tire into and out of its nest up there.

 

Photos at soft droop (nominal +4-4.25"). Don't mind the Arizona Pinstripes and the dirt...truck does get driven 2-3 times/month in the Arizona countryside with 5 wheel rotations every 2.5k mi.



Shackle bolt head does make contact with the spare (mind you RG is closer to 35 dia. than most). Dropping the spare did not increase articulation or droop and for those curious what the bolt head of the CB shackles +2 does to the spare..

So I'm adding methods with a 25 offset an bough new lug nuts. Will I need to keep a set of old lug nuts if I need to put my stock spar tire/ rim on??
