WTF Toyota

So currently have one full time car seat for my 18 month old in the tundra. His seat uses the anchor system on the driver side. Went to buckle the other seat on the passenger side this morning as my wife is due any day now and there’s no anchors on that side. Luckily the center section has anchors just a pain in the ass to get buckled.

That sucks. We always had both in the 4runner so it wasn’t a problem.
Does the anchor seat have the option for the belt thru the bottom or whatever?

right now we have the passenger seat removed for the dog, and the two right next to each other center and driver, I always forget when I first put the seats in; which is easier to buckle first in the middle.

 

I use the belt through option and then put the “anchor” strap or whatever, through the headrest opening and down behind the seat. If you lift the passenger side seat up you’ll find a latch to anchor that clip too. We had to rearrange as we moved to booster seats since they have no belt through option like the child seats usually do.

I can post pictures of what I am talking about if you need me too. This option will depend on your seat type probably too

 

the work around for us was to slide the seat into the center section. I guess I could always do a sequoia conversion in the back with captains chairs, might be pretty cool lol

Both center and driver rear have the weird buckle type restraint, but usually not enough room to fit to forward or rear facing seats

No prob! They all should have the seat belt through option, so that basically replaces those metal hook things that the seat is missing. Then there is a long strap, with a metal hook on the end also, you run thst through the head rest, and when you lift the seat, there is a latch loop under the seat. It’s a PIA to get to but keeps the seat pretty locked in. Also, when doing the seat belt through option, always pull your seat belt all the way out until it locks and retracts back in.

I believe that this is its purpose. There is one in all the cars I’ve put car seats in. Sometimes on the back of the seat in SUVs. For that reason, I would think they are strong enough to hold the seat down. But I’ve luckily never tested one.

 

There was a super bullshit incident local, where a mom drove off a cliff, no restraint on her and she died, 2year old ejected I believe but somehow survived with no serious injuries! Even my 5yo is in a fucking booster

 

I love the crayons under the seat..

We bought our 4runner from a non bearing prosthetic nurse, who said this CD was in the player when she bought it, never took it out, neither have we; baby Beethoven was the CD. I actually kinda like it!!

 

I miss my 1997 4Runner too.
That is what I drove when they were little from 1996 to 2005 when I bought my first tundra..
I don't think I have 1 picture of it..

Thanks for the pictures fellas. Least I know I’m not screwed lol. Might have to do some re-arranging but for now the wife’s hoping the seats in the center and drivers section will work till they go forward facing. We take the sequoia most of the time anyways and I guess I could always move the seats into my dually if I needed too. It has the anchors on either side but no center anchors

Yea I’d never until they are tall enough to wear the seat belt properly. My 7 year old is in a booster for that reason. Still not tall enough to wear the should strap right.

 

No prob! Yea when the kids were not forward facing that seat was behind the driver. Now they are free to kick the crap out of my seat lol

 

I think the idea was to help two kids from the passenger side of the truck, as most adults can reach the center seat while standing outside a rear door. If your two car seats are next to both windows, you have to go to both sides of the truck if your kids need help buckling in.

My wife’s Yukon has the same thing as your truck—latch anchors only in the middle and passenger side of the 2nd row bench. But the engineers made what seems to me like a HUGE mistake—the passenger side is the only part of the 2nd row bench that flips up and slides forward to allow access to the 3rd row. They should have put the latch in the middle and drivers side positions of the 2nd row bench because the passenger side can’t flip up at all when a car seat is latched into it.

Make the bigger one hold the smaller one. Still have room for a fridge. Teamwork.

Not so long ago I was trained in how to properly install a base, a rear facing seat, a front facing seat and a booster seat. I know the statistic is around 6/10 of these being improperly installed but our actual number at the installation clinics / checks was closer to 8/10. My point is: I’m happy to see a thread filled with folks worrying about installing these properly. Every state has federal highway grants to fund car seat checks. Stop by if there’s one nearby and spend 15 minutes, even if yours is installed perfectly, you can turn key what you’ve learned to your loved ones.

 

It’s funny you say that, one day I was showing a pic of my son in the car to one of the bartenders, and she immediately interrupted and nicely told me the chest clip was to high! It needs to be below his armpits, at nipple level! The next week I scolded momma bear, put it lower!!!

 

There’s a million. Infant seats with the carrying handles left up while driving. Almost all are installed too loosely. Anchors > Clips. When installing, kneel on the base / seat and tighten it down. If you can pull the base side to side at the front it’s too loose. If you aren’t leaving imprints in the seats, make it tighter. And just when you think it’s tight enough, cinch it down just a little more. I truly don’t know how a person less than 140 lbs can install a base properly… im 210 and kneeling on it allows me to get it just snug enough to “pass.” But yeah, pass it on. You light save a life!

 

Definitely! I’m a kneeler for sure!!! Imprints are always left in the actual car seats when I take out the kids to move them. I actually purchased replacement fabric because I knew the kids and the car seats would get destroyed. It’s penitently waiting to be installed once they get older.
I did almost shit myself the last time I moved seats over, the pass thru belt on the youngest ones seat wasn’t even latched!!! I called momma over and gently tried to explain that care needs to be taken to check these things

 

On the topic of car seats. Pro tip kitty kats... From an amateur of course. Yoga mats not only protect your seat from kids car seats, but can really help keep them stable.

And yes I went to upgrade our 1 year old to her big brothers seat and the 4 year old got the booster kinda seat... I guess I didn't notice my passenger back seat doesn't have the latch system and my son's booster has the latch... Dang! That would have been nice to have. Oh well, he needs to be on that side or I'll confuse the cute teachers at his school when they deliver him to the dirtiest truck in the whole private school. Seriously how much are we paying for this place? Nevermind honey just tell me how much the raise needs to be haha.

When my son does that I tell him I worked my ass off on those leather seats and he'd better not ruin them. If he continues I reach back and pull his shoes off. He's exactly like me when I was a little fu$&3r. I wouldn't have if any other way!

 

Momma gets jealous that the first boy is my clone. People are nice and tell her the second looks like her, yet he looks just like his bro at the same age….

 

That's funny. My son looked just like me until about 2 and now he looks more like my wife's side. We'll see if he has a barrel chest or is lean like my wife's family. Funny you mention them looking alike because my 1 year old daughter looks a lot like her bigger brother at that age. Hopefully she gets the leaner physique haha. It's crazy how they can look just like you did at 1-2 and completely change after that.
