As I said Toyota is the number one car manufacturer (includes all passenger vehicles and not just trucks) in the world and NA. Here is the current chart for 2021 US auto sales to date.

Toyota Tundra barely pulled 5% of the full size truck sales in 2020. By the switch to TTv6 only I think they gave up on making anymore headway. They came out with a very good upgrade from a Tacoma. I hope they crush it with their choices. I have a perfectly fine 2019 and do not see another Tundra in my future purchases. They fail the first thing on my list, v8. A v8 loafs along to make the same power a v6 needs to be juiced up to achieve. I could drop a Magnuson on mine and then we can compare boosted v8 to boosted v6.

It is a bummer but a sign of the times. The V8 is not long for this world.

When people start trotting out sales numbers to compare the Tundra to the big 3, they largely ignore this. Truck owners are just about the most brand loyal people in the world, and Ford, GM, and Dodge had literal generations to build a fan base before Toyota or Nissan ever built a truck. That is what Toyota is competing against more than anything.

Someone might bring up the greater variety of trucks the big 3 sell. Toyota, and Nissan, don’t sell enough trucks to make it financially viable to offer a bunch of different configurations. The only way they ever will is to offer trucks that the most people will want, not to offer the niche vehicles that so many people here want them to make.

Pertaining to truck sales, the old platform with the best V8 on the market only grabbed 5% ( going by John175) of truck sales. This may reflect why the platform moved to a TTV6 in order to be more competitive. The Tundra was never able to climb the sales charts. Let’s see where the new platform goes over the next decade.

I know people go over all the time. I’m over GVWR sometimes. And I still would be occasionally over in a similarly equipped 3rd gen Tundra.

Are you saying you think a Hilux rated for 2k lbs of payload overseas would be rated for less here? If so, what are you basing that on?

Maybe, but I'm not sure. Odd that TMC owns the Midsize market, but the popularity hasn't jumped to the fullsize. Most of my truck buddies respect the Tundra, and all admit to the overall quality, reliability, and toughness, and even comment on how good my TRD PRO with rear sway bar rides and handles, and sounds, but can't bring themselves to pull away from their GM, Ford or Ram addiction.

My Tundra was my first truck, and I bought because it brought all I wanted to the table. A close second was at the time (2017) was the AT4 GMC and Ram Power Wagon.

Asking the question. The HILUX is not made, rated or sold for the US market. I wonder how it would be rated if it was sold here. I've driven many, and pounded around the middleast in them since 2000. Fun little trucks, but IMO ride way too soft to be sprung like a 2K payload in the US would call for.

The Hilux is pretty much the same as a Tacoma is it not? I always thought the difference was due to marketing?

That brand loyalty people have for the big 3 just doesn’t quite carry over to compact/midsize trucks, and the Japanese were able to get in on that market from the start.

They used to be the same, meaning we used to get solid axle midsize Toyota 1 ton trucks in the US, but that stopped around 30 years ago. Hiluxes are utility vehicles first. Rated by Toyota for 1000kg payload (and that’s in a 4x4 crewcab). The Tacoma (and the Tundra for that matter) are built for comfort primarily.
With how GM and Ford get away with using outright deceptive practices to list their max available payload ratings (removing bumpers & spare, putting lighter alloy rims from a different trim level on their base trucks, etc, to lower curb weight), I don’t think rating standards are inherently more conservative here in the US vs the rest of the world. The same Toyota that builds and rates a crewmax Tundra for 1270lbs in the US builds 1 ton crew cab Hiluxes elsewhere in the world.

I was just hoping Toyota would put some of that Hilux utility into the 3rd gen Tundra. Imagine an unkillable crew cab 4x4 Tundra with 2200 lb of available payload and a 14k lb tow rating. How many guys who reluctantly went to a domestic HD when they got uncomfortable with exceeding their payload ratings or towing a 10k trailer would come back in a heartbeat? Just a thought.

Except for the frame and drivetrain and all the sheet metal, so really the only thing that is the same is the Toyota makes both of them

My personal opinion is she did a better review than a lot of the others. She's the only one, of all the reviews I've watched, that removed the plastic engine cover for a better view.

Doing truck things it will...or beat the ttv6. I tow a boat almost every weekend 80 to 180 miles. I bought a truck to do truck things. If I want mpg I'd have a car.

I hear ya, but a supercharged 5.7 rundra will never get the mpg of a ttv6. Thats all i was saying.

Plus adding supercharger cannot be compared to a turbo.
I’d like to see the MPG towing data. Clearly this new V6 will be able to tow better than the current version.

I’ve been watching her videos for a little while now and they’re pretty good. More entertaining than most. In one of her reviews of the current gen Tundra she drove down a pretty steep hill, then on a whim reversed it and backed up the hill just to see if it would.

My V8 truck is too damned loud. And, there's no solution for it. Everyone who modifies the exhaust is going for louder. Impossible to research a quieter exhaust for my truck.

Really looking forward to a smooth, quiet truck. I don't want to announce my revs and throttle position to the world around me anymore.

    1. People just like to find things to complain about.
    2. From people's comments, many people expected Toyota to make a 1 off truck for each customer that 100% met their needs and don't understand the idea of compromise to meet the needs and wants of the majority of your customers and government regulations.
    3. They are making many assumptions about the new truck based on their knowledge from 30 years ago.

I think it might be interesting to do a content analysis on posts related to the 2022 filtered by poster’s current Tundra year. We might find good ol Mr. Confirmation Bias is at work with newer model owners being focused on the negative and those with older trucks being more positive and open to the 22. Or we may not and it could turn out folks like us with older trucks notice new model owner gripes more due to our own bias. Or it could be a wash either way. In any case, a potentially interesting exercise- not sure if the polling feature would allow more than one variable to be examined?
