Who builds a rack for a roof top tent?

Looking to mount a bush company alpha roof top tent on my 06 double cab. Any thoughts?

 

Best to put tent over the bed, using a bedrack or canopy. Ensure the 2 can take the static and dynamic load.

I’m not looking for a roof rack, I’m looking for a bed rack

 

I plan on using my ladder rack from Thule to put a roof top tent on it. It's rated to 1200 lbs I believe.

To be fair to the guy that TRIED TO HELP YOU..... You never said that you were going for a bedrack in your first post so referencing a rack for a "ROOF TOP" tent.... Easy to see how he was confused.

 

My fault. The bush company alpha tent is a giant tent and is impossible to mount on a roof rack.

I clarified that I’m looking for a bed rack in my response. If somebody felt it was rude then my apologies

 

So… KB Voodoo makes a rack that is adjustable to fit your current truck… and can swap over to another truck down the road.

Victory 4x4 pretty much ripped off KB Voodoo’s design (seems to be Victory’s business model), but Victory uses better (heavier) materials. Start with those two.

@huntsonora the Alpha is a HUGE and heavy tent. Its 220 lbs and 7 feet in length.

What length is your truck bed?

 

It’s a 6 1/2 foot bed, I’ll have to overhang a little over the cab for sure

Honestly that tent limits your choices. You will need a cab high rack so a lot of the common tent bed racks won’t work. I don’t believe RCI or Victory will make a high enough rack.

If it was me, I would put an ARE commercial aluminum canopy on the back and then put the tent on top. A lot like the Firebox Stove guy on YouTube (although he places his tent on the cab).



The other option if you don’t want a canopy an option is something like this from AllPro (it might not be high enough though).

 

This is assuming you don’t want to hang off the back of course….

There are a couple of models of commercial aluminum but most of them are good for 500 lbs dynamic (while truck is moving). Which in my opinion is waaaay more than anyone should put on a truck roof while in motion - far too top heavy.

You can make a pretty cheap decent quality rack using tnutz. Only problem is that the rack legs will be at 45 degrees. If you’re OK with that then I suggest researching it a bit

 

I had the DIY AllPro Rack on my Tacoma and it was solid. It would hold that tent no problem.

I've been using the Thule Xporter pro for the past year and a half now. I love it because I can adjust the height on it. Normally I run it as low as possible to keep things more aero and then in about a minute or less I can raise it up to fit bikes or whatever else in the bed. Rack can hold up to 450 lbs which isn't bad but if you're looking to load it up ad solid metal one will probably be better. It is a pricey rack but I got it for cheap since I worked at a dealer. They have some cheaper options for less but they are not adjustable.
