Like you stated, the only difference is the MHX will have a greater cooling efficiency over the Setrab for those who need it. If you are towing heavy or off-road a bunch the MHX will be better at controlling those high spikes in ATF pan temperatures. I’d say 90% of folks will not see the difference in temperatures between the two coolers as the thermostat doesn’t open until around 185 degrees.

Personally, I didn’t want the shiny MHX visible behind my black grill, and the Setrab seems better than anything Toyota has used stock. So I saved the hundo with the Setrab and it has worked great. I could’ve saved a bit more cobbling together the parts plus a Hayden cooler, but bought the kit as kudos to Nick (a person, not a huge corporation) for making this available and accessible for everyone.

Thanks for the reply, sounds like MHX is worth it for me then.

The MHX has a lifetime warranty. Cooling capacity is
    • Up to 46,000 BTU/HR for MHX
    • 27,000-39,000 BTU/Hr for setrab i'm not sure why there's such a drastic difference in cooling rates in setrab
I believe the setrab works with supercharging without doing anything different, whereas the mhx is larger and interferes with supercharger but can be done with modifications.

I painted my MHX with eastwood radiator black paint. Can't see it at all behind the grille. Doesn't affect cooling either.

I have the MHX-514 and while I have no idea if it’s better than the Setrab for my application I am happy with it. I leave the truck in Drive when I tow and it pretty much stays in 5th on the highway. The highest pan temp I have seen while towing was 203f and it was climbing a steep grade in 3rd and 4th for several miles. Most of the time I’m between 190 and 195, empty or loaded.

I went with the Improved Racing cooler because I liked the fact it was made in the USA and it had higher cooling ratings.

@chasenicholas93 For future reference, can the unit be mounted lower on the radiator and still retain its cooling qualities? I have some plans for what's directly behind the grill, and this would clash with that. Thank you in advance.

Just got my new Techstream cable and here’s the updated ATF thermal degradation estimate:
    4960 miles: 320 (trans cooler installed, winter-spring)
    9898 miles: 594 (summer-fall)

Interesting. I have a scan gauge with that PID. I will check to see what it says.

Yes, that shouldn’t be an issue as long as it doesn’t pass the power steering cooler.

Question for those who have installed one of these kits.

Anyone also have a behind the grill light bar using the brackets that bolt on where the plastic wind deflectors go? Curious to understand hose routing and clearance across the front of the added cooler if you have done it.

HA! Exactly why I asked in the post answered immediately above yours. Great minds... I hope to have a light bar spanning the better part of that space, and I hope to have the cooler at some point as well. I can imagine having to fab a different mounting bracket and get a different set of hoses; neither of which would be of much concern in the long run; but if @chasenicholas93 gets too many folks asking, it might do to have an option ready for purchase...;)

I wondered if that was the case. I have the cooler already installed. Trying to figure out lighting options now and if I need to redo hoses, etc.

Just finished my install and test drive. This kit is fantastic and I'm so glad I got one. That said, I never want to do it again LOL. I'm a simple DIY fella so yes anyone can do it if I can but it was incredibly time consuming and so many small things were a fight. If there was anyone within 2 hours drive I could trust to pay to do this, I would have. I'm slow though, I triple read everything and went back over my notes from the video and watched parts of the video again. So in total including leveling the truck to finishing the test drive, it took me a good 8 hours. Could probably do it again in 4.

Some tools I'm glad I got before hand thanks to tips on here were the 13mm joint socket and extra long needle nose pliers. A tip from me, get some 3/8 inner X 1/2 outer diameter tubing with a small funnel to fill your trans. I ran the tube from the engine bay and let gravity do its thing. Way faster and easier than using a hand pump. I also took a few tips from the video and used those in substitute to the paper directions. One thing from the video, when he is showing you the hoses on the thermostat, he went past the nub on the lower connection, I'd say don't do that, the hose should stop at the nub otherwise it bows the tube open which probably doesn't matter but still.

Final note, anyone on the fence should buy this kit just incase someday they stop making it or parts become hard to find. I wouldn't want to piece this together myself, everything just worked together so nicely, it's an extremely well thought out kit and when you combine the paper instructions with the video, it all comes together.

    Thanks!

I guess my ATF changes will not be due to its thermal degradation, but rather to flush out the clutch pack particles collecting in the pan.

Ordered Wednesday night at 10pm, arrived this afternoon. When the website says ships the next business day, it’s not joking. I’ll be installing it first thing tomorrow morning.

Because cutting things and grinding things is inconvenient enough, one must have an angle grinder to cut, and an angle grinder to grind. This is the way.

Can you provide a picture or reference the light bar you’d like to install? I may be able to come up with a solution.

The mounts I'll be using will either be these or something like them. DD makes this kit, which is more popular for the application, and CaliRaised makes kits too; but I'm going to try hard to fit one of these on either side of the emblem on my Platinum/cheese grater grille using some angle iron between the mounting plates. I want to completely fill the space there, not leave half of it open like the kit. Not certain right now whether it will all fit, but that's the plan. Just by looking at pics of your cooler, it seems if the cooler could slide down maybe 6" or 8", I can have my way.

    grille.jpg

I have plenty on the list above this, so it'll be 18 months or more for me. I can't see it being worth your while to have something ready to go if I'm the only idiot asking, but lights behind the grille are something plenty of folks have or have in mind. I hope the interruption winds up being worth the time you're thinking about it.

    Thanks for being interested.

Mmmm, sexy. I went a bit out of order of the instructions but it only took me about 3 hours overall. I opted to mount the cooler first, then the hard lines, then route the hose between the cooler and hard lines. My logic was I could still drive the truck at that point if needed since I hadn’t hooked it to the transmission yet.

I’d say the most difficult part was getting the thermostat on. Only because my truck is stock height and I didn’t jack it up at all. Overall though, fantastic kit, thanks op.

I should add that the only minor issue I had was the bottom bolt to the trans cooler mount didn't want to thread into the truck, I presume because those threads were a bit rusty. I reused the horn bolt and it worked great. The tips of the OE bolts are designed so they can clean up threads as they thread in and it worked a treat.

Your going 'out of order' and pushing the point of no return out to the end of the adventure was smarter.

Agreed. I used 1/2” ID - 5/8” OD tubing, which held nicely in the transmission fill hole

Added tip: I found the natural curve in the tubing made it hard to feed down through the engine compartment, so I taped the tubing to a dowel

Thanks, I thought so. The last thing I needed was an emergency to come up and need to drive somewhere and be caught with my pants down.

Finished my install of the MHX kit , I did the same thing as EatsleepTaco , went out of order coincidentally like him , the install was not bad . Install of flex hose to the front of hard line was PIA, because of limited space. I too had a hard time installing and could not screw the bottom mount to the frame threads and had to email Nick, who replied very quickly, I too ended up using the horn bolt . One more issue was I received a wrong pump from Amazon, and would not fit the ATF quart , but we adapted . I drove around a bit now , and feel the shift are smooth and positive .

Happy to hear the install went (mostly) smoothly. I agree, getting the rubber hose on the front of the hard lines was a pain in the dick, I really had to muscle them on there. ATF acting as lube helped but I could only get them on 90% of the way. It was enough to get a solid seating of the clamp and no leaks, so good enough for me.
