What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

I've been tightening and removing the stock bolts with washers on the bolt side for my build. The factory nuts are welded to the frame except 1 a side. I'm bolting 1/8-1/4 plate to the frame. I would have to go way over 100 ft lbs and strip the factory bolts before the washers ever had a chance to deform. The bolt set up must be different.

Or, are there supplied bolts that secure the bumper to the plate/mount ends opposite the frame bolting?

 

No bolts were supplied with the bumper. It mounts with the 6 factor bolts to the three nuts on the frame on each side shown in this picture.

 

how thick are the mounting brackets you are bolting into?

 

I’m using the 2 rear frame bolts for now. The hitch brackets are also my bumper supports, but that’s another story. I can’t imagine warping the washers, but maybe just go 65 lb and blue locktite.

 

It's a thick plate of steel, but the cutouts are oblong to allow for vertical and horizontal adjustment.

 

Might be worth getting it checked out again if your truck was never sprayed in the past. It's not too late.

 

Ah, perhaps the size of the adjustment holes allow the bolts to suck in a bit. When that begins to happen, its plenty tight.

 

No, it got sprayed; It just didn't last, especially the interior of the boxed section. The frame is actually rusting from the inside out at the lowest point of the frame.

 

Yeah that rubberized crap will ruin it. It also closes out the recall. Good luck with it in the long run.

 

this is clean, I don’t think it would have bothered as much as I thought. I stayed with the Tacoma/4Runner bracket.

 

Next up on the fix list is this mirror. This has always annoyed me. Looking into the Gentex 177 auto dimming mirror w/compass and temperature. I've missed not having an exterior temp sensor on these trucks.

 

your a double cab? There’s a good chance the wiring for the auto dim mirror is already up there. Take your overhead console loose and it’ll be tape to the wiring harness if it’s there

 

75 lbs? Diagram called for 74lbs. Perfect. Those washers were just getting comfortable to enjoy the ride. I think it’s possible that they are meant to distort slightly. This is just a thought and could be completely wrong, but the holes in the hitch mount are slightly oversized, and a ‘distorting’ washer could actually be shaping itself into that hole to keep locked in place. Otherwise, wouldn’t the mount have the same amount of play to jiggle about, as the bolt does in the oversized hole?

 

I think some of my projector stuff comes today. I'm still deciding if I want to do the switchback light strip. I like them, but they do look a little hokey at times and the DC trucks already have a lot of lights going on. Not to mention I have switchback halos that may or may not actually get used. Not sure yet.

Here's what I was working on before I got pulled off on other stuff and then just recently decided to upgrade to D2s projectors. Not that anything is wrong with the h1s. I actually love the h1 cheapo projectors I rock now.

If you don't already have a backup camera on your head unit you could likely find a mirror that does it all. I was pretty impressed with all the options I saw. I am like you and really enjoy an external temperature sensor. In the winter it's great to have a reminder that ice can be anywhere. My wife's old car would alert us if the temp dropped below maybe 38*. I actually liked that. Never know when you drive by a field and it goes from 45 into the 30s unless you know the area very well or have a sensor.

 

I think I saw it in the dedicated thread and can't remember, but what sliders are those if you don't mind sharing?

@skywalker474 made them. I will say, they were super well planned out, all the bolt holes and clearance were perfect!!

Been meaning to do this little project for awhile. A dude in the 1st gen tundra group on Facebook posted about his frame being eat out right where the ac drains. For less than $15 bucks, Figured why not re-route it

materials needed:
* 3/8 x 3/8 in ID brass barb splicer
* 2 #004 hose clamps
* 10 ft of 1/2in OD x 3/8in IDclear vinyl tube (least footage they sale, but I’ll be doing the sequoia also)
*couple zip ties

 

I'll put that little job on my list, looks good.

Your sway end links are by Suspension Maxx right? What's your thoughts on them?

 

Thanks man, I actually came back in here to post I re-routed the hose, after somebody on the Facebook tundras group brought up that hose possibly rubbing and developing a leak. I’m not sure it actually would have but better safe than sorry.


I’m actually running overland custom designa links. Have a set on the tundra and sequoia both. Super pleased with them. They’ve got a uniball design and a ball joint design. I went with the ball joint design as they’re re-buildable

Appreciate it, I'll check them out. New links are recommended for 2" or more of lift right? I'm assuming for better articulation.

 

I think they recommend them to correct the angles from lifting. But I’ve also seen people run stock ones with no issues lifted. Mine were toast, so I opted for the longer ones

Had a good trip to TN, and crossed 270,000 miles. Guess I’ll be ordering a timing belt and water pump.

 

Peeled my turn signal lens the rest of the way off. Gonna reglue it.

 

How are they attached? Is it butyl like stuff like a headlight or what? I was thinking about messing with mine after my headlights. Not sure why but I don't love the dual bulb thing the DC has on it.

I did knock my spare marker light off the shelf yesterday and break it. I guess that's a good candidate to mod.

 

Hmm. Was looking closer at my front shock install today and noticed the the spring isolator on the driver side looks off. Like the spring isn't seated properly in the mount. I'm also getting a bit of a grinding noise when I go in reverse and go to full lock. Thoughts? I am going to call the shop tomorrow. Also I noticed the passenger side dust cover has fallen down. Does that just snap up again?

It also looks to me that the UCAs are sitting a bit differently too, the truck is on level ground left to right...

Other than that I'm still messing with my bumper.

The deer smack loosened half of it, and the coldfront let me get it the rest of the way without peeling. Ive got some gorilla construction adhesive i plan to use. I dont have time right now to pull it out and fiddle with it, but id like to fit a 2x3 led light behind the waterfall bulb cover.

Well, either the steering pump high pressure line has a slow leak or the steering rack is on the way out after many years of a slow leak.

I'm guessing the latter since the line was dry but the rack was not.

Had to dump 1/4 quart of atf in the reservoir to all but silence the dead whale crying under the hood.

The cycle of repair is never ending so it seems.
