I call them pre-formed turds, and don’t eat them.

On topic the frame looks like a step up, about the only complaints I hear are no V8 (because people like V8’s), and it’s ugly to some. Everything else is an improvement.

Losing 300lbs off the rear axle rating…WTF! This may be a deal breaker for me. I’m surprised its not getting too much discussion on this forum. I tow a 7K travel trailer with 1K tongue weight. I am with in 100lbs of my current axle rating of 4100lbs. Always been over payload (1325) and not concerned a bit about that number. But, I cannot come in over the rear axle rating.
If the hybrid towing mpg’s are low (7-8) with a 32 gallon tank, then I’m not gaining much (miles while towing) with my 26 gallon tank and 9-10mpg towing in my 2008 Crewmax. I’d be better off getting a 2nd gen Tundra with the 38 gallon tank.
I’ve driven nothing but Toyota products since 1998, love them. But, this truck just may not work for my needs. And anybody interested in towing needs to be aware of the 3800lb rear axle rating. Keeping my fingers crossed that somehow I can make this truck work.

If you have a need to towing anything between 8k-14k or hauling 2k+ just look for a 1 ton gasser. The main reason is stability. I’ve towed max with my tundra and I’ve towed the exact same setup with my GMC 3500 gasser. The engine power between the two (5.7 vs 6.6) is about the same, but the towing confidence is on a different level.

Ford should be slapped for putting that 13,800 number out there. They know that number is for a 4x2 max tow package truck towing on a straight road at sea level.

I have heard great things about the 7.3 and if your needs meet what I stated above I would give it a look.

I would look more for 1 tons than 3/4 because the payload. My GMC with the SLE package (same as SR5) has a payload of 4248lbs and max towing 14,500.

Recently I have been towing near max weight and have been close to that diesel category. @ColoradoTJ i did the same run up that grade yesterday and realized it was my driving that caused the hesitation on the first run.

I don’t want to steer you away from the tundra. I think the tundra is and will be the best 1/2 ton platform. But if your needs are at the upper limits of the 1/2 ton you won’t regret getting a HD truck.

Also I paid $47k for my truck. Right in the ballpark of 1/2 tons

I would not consider the 2.5 gen obsolete. Yes the 3rd Gen gets better gas mileage and has better performance. But the 2.5 is still a top notch truck IMHO.

I am in the minority here but I never got those mpg’s. My lowest tank average since I purchased the truck was 15. I average between 16 and 17.

In all honesty I avoid city driving whenever I can.

OP likes the 2022 - nothing wrong with that. Their opinion , their money to spend.

Several people on here think the 2022 is “light years” ahead of the 2021 with all us fancy lasers, red leather interior and bed made of recycled soda bottles and such. Again - entitled to your opinions.

My personal take - it’s a mixed bag. Frame wise - it’s better on paper, interior - it’s preference, powertrain - again a toss up - better mpg but with the hybrid assist on upper trims standard I prefer the old V8 and worse mpg vs potential high repair bills 8-10 years in.

Finally - body - I’m sorry but the thing remains ugly to me. Until they bring out a body kit or some great looking accessories to alter the appearance - I’ll stick with a gen 2.5.

Bottom line is this - if you hate your 2.5 and think it’s obsolete - I’ve got good news for you - there’s a crowd of people out there with cash in hand ready to buy it for a fair price.

And if anyone of you unhappy gen 2.5 owners happens to be in Arizona and has a 4x4 with under 60k miles asking under 43k in great shape with a clean CarFax - there’s someone on this board whose ready to buy today I saw earlier.

So they stated non-hybrid is 20 mpg combined. Surprisingly low to me.

TFL just posted this MPG video.
    https://youtu.be/XT88pm_GSE4

Granted that this engine isn't broken in yet but 19.9 mpg over 150 miles (it looks to be premium fuel as well) isn't good considering the 5.7 could get that. I really expected much better fuel economy.

I don’t think I’ve gotten above 15 ever, even on extended trips. Have you routinely gotten 19-20 MPG with your 5.7? Maybe it’s the way I drive, but I’d sell one of my kids to average near 20 in this thing.

Premium does not guarantee better MPGs. In fact in some cases it could lower the MPGs if the engine wasn't designed for it. Higher octane doesn't mean higher power, it just burns slower and resists pre-detonation better. What I'm wondering is by the continuity of that video, he did several zero to 60 tests and off-roading along with his "mostly highway" miles. If that's the case then that's a great result.

Agreed. That may also be a 4x4. Best I Tundra mileage I attained for a tank of fuel at sea level in my 2016 4.6L was ~18mpg. My 2018 4x4 5.7 was 17mpg until I lifted it and put on bigger tires. Then I was thrilled at 14.5-15mpg.

One looks to be from April (6 months ago - doesn't make much sense) and the other looks to be from early this morning.

Only way I can get 19-20 mpgs is if I am under 60 mph on the highway.

I really like the dark blue, that would be my number one choice. I like some of the light blues, but the dark blue is much more "classy" and I think I might get tired of the bright blues eventually.

Yeah most of my “tests” were 70-75mpg. I usually stick to about 4mph over posted.

I've seen it at the dealer on other vehicles. Its a cool colour. Look dark enough to be black at night, dark blue/purple in the overcast, and navy blue in the sunlight. I think it will look great on a Tundra.
