People overload every truck imaginable and most of the time nothing goes wrong. But being 2000+ lbs over GVWR(what is that like 25%?) is too extreme for me. Get a better suited truck.

I really don't understand the comment about the American trucks being less reliable. Did they have a failure? Was there some catastrophic incident that left them stranded? The truck in that picture is a crew cab 8' bed 3500 with a 1200 lb Cummins sitting over the front axle. That thing is probably pushing 8500 lbs. I mean talk about the worst possible truck you could have picked. The thing has like a 34' long wheelbase and steers like the titanic.

I'm really good at putting on weight. Same goes for my Tundra.
I will try to weigh each part next time I do a complete frame off resto. Which I forsee happening in the near future.

I read about an endurance race several years back where one team took the windshield wipers off their car for weight reduction. They had to retire when it started raining, though.

I've been following Wolfpack_outdoors on IG. His Crewmax is almost 10,000 lbs. It has a set up like the one here. He also has a YouTube channel for anybody interested in the build up of his rig. He travels with his family, a family of 4. Crewmax being short on the rear, the camper has quite a bit of an overhang and resulted in some lifting (see-saw) effect on the front. He made some adjustments since.

If anything, these trucks are arguments “for” being able to go significantly over payload. Not that I’d ever want to be that far over.

    Here are my thoughts:

Lots of Toyotas often get loaded over their payload rating day in and day out. Some of them hold up quite well. That said, the rating is there for a reason. In almost all cases, the reason is a very good one.

Also consider this: To my knowledge, the 2007+Tundra, Tacoma, etc are based on the Land Cruiser Prado platform. It's a good solid platform that I've seen working hard in South America, but I think the Tundra kind of pushes the platform close to the edge because it is just so massive. The LC Prado platform makes a nice tough LC Prado but the Tundra is like 50% bigger and heavier. Thus I would expect the Tundra to be less forgiving of overloading and mistreatment than other vehicles on the same platform.

Oh, also, the Land Cruiser Prado is NOT a Land Cruiser. The Land Cruiser is an industrial grade vehicle, the LC prado is a consumer grade vehicle. Both fine vehicles for their applications, but the Land Cruiser is much tougher

The Tundra and Sequoia share some platform bits with the 200 series LandCruiser.

I think using the term based on is a bit of a stretch here. Specifically for the Tundra, the frame and suspension forward of the A-pillar is basically the same as the 200 series Land Cruiser. Everything behind the A-pillar is different due to the (dumb) triple tech frame idea. The rear axle is a beefed up version of the 9.5 axle in the 200 series.

The idea of the Tundra having smaller margin for being overloaded does not really hold up IMO. A 200 series is still very heavy and not far off in terms of weight from most Tundras stock. In Australia the 200 series can have the GVM legally increased (Aussie for GVWR) increased to 4000KG (8818lbs) by simply having upgraded coils and struts installed by a licensed installer. There are also kits that raise it as high as 4495kg with additional mods.

Given the larger axle and components on the Tundra, I would say it can handle as much if not more additional load than the 200.

Regarding the Tacoma, it also uses the same frame/suspension as the Prado forward of the a-pillar, aft of the a-pillar its different.
4Runner is a basically a Prado with a different body, as was the FJ Cruiser when it was available. The GX460 is 100% the Prado with a Lexus badge.
HiLux/Fortunner are technically a different platform, but again share some bits with the Prado, which currently would be the 150 series, though the 180 series is due to be out soon.

All of this is going to change going forward of course with TNGA. As the 2022 Tundra is literally a stretched 300 series chassis. I suspect everything in the future will be based on either a tweaked/modified Landcruiser or Prado platform depending on size.

Pretty much the Tundra has a low GVWR due to the rear suspension and comfort. Other wise the drive train , chassis , power and brakes are up to the par on allowing it to pass a higher number on the test. Half tons any ways are just glorified cars with there payload being the same. Once you step up to something serious for a work truck like a 1 1/2 ton the payload weight is all what you want to pay for up-to its actual cutoff for weight. I don't have much extra weight just front bumper , winch , canopy stereo , 20s wrapped with 33x12.50s and I'm part of the 7k club.

But the Tundra GVWR is on par with the competitors...
