Todays thing I hate - attorneys.

Just in general attorneys…not that they are a particularly “loved” group most days - but just really getting under my skin way to early on a Monday…and for once they are offering me money…not the other way around (of course you know one expects a healthy chunk of that offer for their services).

I find the level of rabid hatred for bicyclists over all other annoyances on the road interesting.

It's no less aggravating for cyclists either. Fact is, cars, bikes, and pedestrians should have their own separate, dedicated "lanes" for safe travel. Unfortunately the US doesn't do transit planning / infrastructure well.

It's less about the means of conveyance and more the idiot behavior. An idiot in a car, on a bike, or walking is a problem, sure. I think the added heat in the situation is that if a cyclist, biker, or a pedestrian is dumb I am at a greater risk of killing them. A fender bender is bad enough, but killing somebody (even accidentally) is a terrifying prospect. That fear is expressed as anger.

For most normal, sane people, I think you have a point. Others seem to think it should be legal to run them down. In some jurisdictions, they even appear to have official support of that viewpoint:

As a mechanic that's worked on diesels and now works on euros, I have a thing to add to this point.

People who buy diesel pickups and european cars and then throw a fit because they can't afford the maintenance. You bought the most expensive thing to maintain, don't scream at me because your oil change costs over $200 for the cheap shop.

You always know if someone is prepared for owning a Euro…they immediately say “Yeah, I know. I have a good mechanic”.

I don't have time to read that, so my comment is being made without that info. Apologies in advance if I raise something addressed there.

I don't believe anyone is advocating that it should be legal to run anyone down. I think it's more a push to change the way responsibility is legally assigned. Legally, if a car hits a pedestrian the car is at fault the majority of the time because the pedestrian "has right of way" and the responsibility to not kill them is on the motorist. Conversely, look at the trains. The train is not liable for somebody else's stupidity the same way a motorist is.

Short story: 16 year old kid tries to "roll coal" on cyclists. Supposedly loses control and runs over 6 of them. At least 2 life-flighted out, and 4 with serious injury (some that could be life altering). Police release kid to parents without writing as much as a traffic ticket. This particular county has a history of being hostile toward cyclists.

I rode for about a year when training for a 150 mile benefit ride with work. Of course, I dove in and started reading all kinds of cycling articles. Instances such as described - where authorities routinely refuse to protect cyclists and hold auto drivers accountable are more common than one would think.

I loved riding, hated the diaper shorts (but they really do help save the tender bits of your undercarriage on long rides), but don't ride ride anymore because you just can't trust those in cars. Most people are reciprocal of cyclists - if you're doing what you're supposed to and not being an ass, they treat you well. But more than the jerks, the distracted drivers looking into their phones scare me more.

While it's great exercise (way easier on the knees/back than running), I now occasionally take the MTB to offroad trails to ride. Plus, the wife will ride MTB with me - she always refused to ride on road because of what we've been discussing. Unfortunately, MTB trails aren't as plentiful or near to home as roads, so just grabbing the bike and going for a ride isn't so easy. We won't even discuss mixed use trails, those generally aren't suited for mixed use and are essentially pedestrian only.

While I don't advocate hostility towards cyclist, I feel that most motorist are irritated that cyclist chose to ride on the busiest roadways while side streets offer a shorter distance traveled and less congestion. I can't tell you how many times I was making a right hand turn in traffic and had to slam on brakes at the last minute because a cyclist was passing traffic on the right. Cyclist are supposed to follow the same rules as cars in most states for a reason, safety.

Last month my son was hit by a car while riding an E-scooter. Fortunately he was fine but I wanted to talk with the police to see if the driver had reported it. It turns out that my son was crossing a road going the wrong direction from the sidewalk. The car had a stop sign but I had explained to my son that the way he choose to cross the street put the motorist at a great disadvantage for visibility and he understood. If you try to explain the same thing to most cyclist it always turns into some BS about them saving the world since they are not driving a car. Don't get me started on the whole "I pay for the roads too" argument.

I can totally understand your stance. I think both sides wind up with a sour view because of a few idiots/assholes one each side. I've had lots of cyclists ignore road rules and lanes, nearly get hit, and then have the audacity to cop attitude about it. Those are the ones that people get mad about, and those are the ones we remember. Same for road ragers and phone users. Those are the stand outs. We tend to ignore/forget the non remarkable interactions we have and focus on these worst case ones.

All said and done, there are idiots everywhere, and the idiot of whatever situation should be the ones being held accountable. The scenario you laid out... the kid in the truck was at fault. The herd of cyclists that don't stay in the cycle lanes or run lights/signs... their the problem. It's all situational, and we all have our own experiences. 99% of my experiences with cyclists are positive/uneventful, but I've never nearly run anyone over unless they've done something dumb.

That's null and void right off. I pay for tanks, planes, and cool guns, but I don't get to use ANY of them. :(

Absolutely, wanna make a statement with your ride - good for you.

But for some of these people the statement you are making is “I am a complete moron”.

I have developed a complete hatred of certain models and their owners - just because they think they have something “special” when in fact all they have is a costly to maintain nameplate on their car.

It’s funny - the higher end luxury is usually easier to deal with - it’s the ones who given the choice of a new Hyundai or Kia or a 6 year old Audi A4 with 100k miles and went with the Audi - then bitch about the cost of an oil change or when the turbo goes.

Don’t buy it if you can’t afford the warranty - and when they laugh before they tell you the price of the warranty - take that as a warning and run.

Motorcycles with extremely loud exhaust. This is only something has started to bother me since having a kid that still takes naps haha I live on a corner lot of a 4-way stop sign on a back road. On the weekend, bikes travel in packs to enjoy the twists and literally full throttle leave the stop signs. It never wakes my daughter up from her nap but it just pisses me off to no end.

Not 'angry' but 'upset' at the prices of beef. Just 2 months ago i bought my favorite brand of beef fajitas at 8.99/pound (keep in mind they were 6.99 prior to covid's start last year).

Just went a couple days ago, now they're 10.49/pound, WTF? will decent prices ever return, i doubt it....

Wait - your telling me Bentley DIDN’T build me Chrysler 300 ?!? They just made the grille for it ??

Oh, they didn’t make that either - then why in the hell did I pay so much for it ?

Seriously, back at one particular shop I worked out of - I used to offer up a running bet on any 300 that I saw on the schedule - if it comes in with “rims” (read cheap knock offs) a Bentley grille and smelling of weed inside - you owe me lunch - if not, I’ll pay. After a few dozen free lunches I ran out of suckers to play the game.

I’m all for customization of cars - and don’t even mind imitation. I mean wanna make your Fiero look like a Ferrari - go ahead. But this one is just way too over done and the difference between the guy with the kit car and the 300 - kit car owners still REALIZE their car isn’t worth a couple hundred grand.

All time favorite though the Shelby Cobra owner who told me I was way off base on his cars value - I asked him to come look at the car with me - opened the hood and asked why he felt Shelby made a 6 cylinder ‘Stang? He said of course they didn’t - so I said count the plug wires and let me know when you get passed 6.

Goes completely red faced and starts cussing the guy on Craigslist who sold him the car 3 months ago for 40k - “But all the badges are there - he said he needed cash bad and looked like it” Thought he was buying something worth much more for a song - seriously dude was lucky to have gotten a 15k car out of the deal - I have a feeling he and that newly found 40k would have parted quickly anyway and he likely would have nothing more than a packet of magic beans to have shown if he hadn’t been swindled on the car.

Price of beef (or lumber/gas or take your pick of any number of things) - I don’t like higher prices - but I HATE the fact prices double - but when selling timber, cattle my lease payments on the minerals my check stays the same or goes down. Yes - I realize you sell early and price jumps happen later on some things - but shouldn’t this years checks for next years timber be higher or shouldn’t my royalty check 6 months from now reflect higher natural gas prices? It’s all “middle man/producer” markup and taking advantage of market conditions - the little guy gets screwed as always.

Loud exhaust - I mean I like a sweet sounding exhaust as much as anyone, it’s just keeping in mind that not everyone appreciates it in the middle of the night. Ditto car stereos -I don’t get too angry with them in general, but I no longer live at the entrance to a sub division either - hated having cars coming in and out at all hours radio blaring….and you knew the 3 houses they were visiting too - freaking kids who every weekend it seemed were checking to see if you left anything that looked valuable in your car and would smash a window in a heartbeat.

I'm not sure I understand why the temperature dropping from "i'm never leaving central A/C" to "Let's hang out in the yard and do some grilling" would make you angry? I mean 75 is still a touch warm, but it's tolerable. 60 - 65 is about perfect.
