I am looking at a 2019 SR5 with the upgrade package. The spec sheet from the dealer says 26 but I suspect that is just the default tank listed and not the upgrade. The truck had the bucket seats with the center console shiftier. I am 200 miles away from the dealer so I cannot drive down and look. The dealer is supposed to be checking for me.

I went to toyotas VIn checker and I dont see it listed in there but it says it has the SR5 Upgrade package

Sticker should specifically say SR5 upgrade package and/or somewhere in the sticker it should say 38 gal tank.

Looking is the only way to verify. A used vehicle could have factory 26, 38, aftermarket 46, or spare tire cavity mounted extra tank.

Only way to be sure if to ask them to send you a picture from under the truck. Most of the time you’ll know more about the truck than the salesman.

What do I look for or what does it look like?

I looked up the VIN on Toyotas site of another truck that specifically lists the 38 tank and the 38 tank is not listed on it either, just the Upgrade pkg.

If that sticker is accurate, it says SR5 upgrade package then yes it should have it.
But like the other folks said, verify visually. trust but verify.

I just recently bought a 2020 SR5 Crewmax and I went through the same research. From what I can tell, you can get an SR5 with a bench seat and the 26 gallon tank, that's called "SR5 package" or something similar (let me try and find one for sale so I can grab the exact wording) and includes SR5 items like interval wipers and a few minor upgrades over SR. Bucket seats with center shifter is "SR5 Upgrade package" and includes the 38 gallon tank.

Without getting under the truck, if it happens to be a full tank of gas (or even if it is partial) maybe they can send a photo of the fuel gauge with the miles remaining. If it's full and a 400+ mile range, it is the 38 gallon tank

    Too many, but not enough....
If your truck has a bench seat, you have the 26 gallon.

    SR5 upgrade package = 38 gallon.

Also when you fill up on empty, if you put in more than 20 gallons, you have the 38 gallon.

Specs sound like a basic SR5, which could have a 26 gallon tank.

haha that was during when i first started it. now it averages 570-580 every fill up.
range calculation is based on your previous tank average.
i average about 15+ mpg. my commutes are 95% highway.

The vin don't mean squat on a used vehicle that may have been modified for some specific reason.

Not on a used vehicle if the po replaced the tank.

Has anyone EVER replaced the larger tank for a smaller one?

Would you be at all concerned over a used 2019 Tundra with 57K miles for 42.6K asking price?

Yes it’s been done. Also they have aftermarket bigger tanks as long as you don’t live in California

** sorry I read that wrong… you want a small tank? Buy the 38 gallon truck and I’ll swap you for the small 26

42k out the door maybe is okay.

44k is average MSRP for a brand new SR5 crewmax 4x4 with the larger fuel tank.

There is always a chance a fuel thief cut up a tank and a used one was put in. So, let's say a guy needs a salvage tank and the only one available in his budget is a 26. Boom 26 gallon tank appears in sr5 upgrade truck.

I get that, but we both seem to agree. So, why not just suggest a visual confirmation?
