Nice looking rig - Congrats. Looks like a Leer XR100 cap with windoors? What kind of rack is that on top?

Due for my first oil change. What do you guys think about waiting 10k miles for an oil change?

I'm sure you will get a wide range of opinions with that question. For me, I use Mobil 1 fully synthetic and change my oil and rotate the tires at 10,000 miles. If I were running non-synthetic, I would change every 5K miles. YMMV.

Installed the Baxter TS-301-BK cartridge to spin-on oil filter adapter. It clears the stock black off road skid plate easily. I ended up needing just under 9 quarts of oil instead of the previously required 8.5 to get her full. At my next oil change, I'll be leaving the skid plate on since I can easily reach the spin-on filter through the side of the skid. I'll have to catch the filter's oil with a small pan or rag sitting on top of the skid plate but I'll figure that out later.

I change my oil at 7500 miles. There are a lot of different opinions on oil changes here.

I don't drive any of my cars anywhere near 10k miles a year, though they are all on the 10k/12 month schedule, so I do my changes once a year. Years back, when I was driving more, I followed the 10k intervals without issue.

What does the oil look like?

There was a big discussion on this over on the lexus forums where some werent changing their (synthetic) oil for 50,000 miles (!) as they say it doesnt break down.

I read that back around 2010 or so and started waiting 25,000 miles on my GS300 (2jz) and when I drain the oil it looks brand new!

Now on my mercedes I change it every 5k and its as black as coal. So 25k for my lexus, 5k for my mercedes and I did change the oil on my Tundra at 4k as I was taking it to Florida for vacation, otherwise I may have waited till 10k as the dealer said its fine.

I use the same oil but change it every 5,000 miles. I changed at 1k and then have done it at 5k, 10k, etc. For me, that is about once every 9-12 months.

That's a good question...I'll look today. With ToyotaCare I figured you had to wait the recommended intervals to get the dealer to do it for free? I assume they use full synthetic since they recommend every 10k miles.

    Wow 50k miles!

At over $25 a pop at Wallyworld, I can’t afford to change it more often!

First DIY oil change since Toyota care ran out and installed Fumoto Valve. MotiveX filter wrench worked well but the filter drain tool not as much. Maybe I did it wrong but I couldn’t get it threaded before all the oil ran out. Using the plastic piece that comes in the filter with a water bottle may actually be less mess. Funnel worked very well.

You need to make sure the knurled knob is fully unscrewed before threading the nut shaped part onto the filter. Then you tighten the knob, which opens the valve to let the oil flow. It'll be cleaner next time.

@gabex35 Where is it? I own my truck, so I'm wondering if that's its only job, and if it's currently installed. @Tundratoofun you sure that thing isn't involved in data reporting for maintenance? First I've heard of this thing, so I'm a little animated here.
