CAB AND DOOR SIZE

I’m guessing because the new truck is on the TNGA-F. Compromises had to be made to get all new vehicles to fit on this platform.

 

The 2.7" loss in leg room is very disappointing. I'm not sure what to make of the 'legroom specs' vs what we are seeing in videos, where legroom in back looks very small. I have a 2015 4Runner and Toyota lists the legroom specs on that as 41.7/32.9 , which is almost identical to the 22 DC Tundra. At 5'11'' I have pleanty of space behind the driver seat and can sit behind myself with a few inches to spare. I guess I will just have to see the new Tundra in person to get a feel for usable passenger space.

 

Sounds like we paid 2.7 inch of leg room for all those coolers in the nose.

 

I think 4 runner have more tilt on the back seat, DC is more straight. Look like it’s straighter then the 21.

My experience is different. Plenty of space 5-10.

 

Luxurious like a United flight.

Baby seats, work tools, and full sized adults with feet/ski boots will persuade me otherwise.

I have never had humans in my AC Tacoma’s rear seats, but even for work tools/etc. that little space fills too quickly for me.

 

Why is the driver's seat pushed back behind the B pillar?

 

Plenty of room for kiddos and the occasional adult.

 

Who wears ski boots in the truck? That’s a bear, tunes and a minute in the parking lot sorta deal.

I'm 6’1”, 32” inseam. This is where the seat is with me in position to drive. And I sit very upright compared to most.

Clever marketing pics/angles lead you to believe this thing is cavernous. Trust me, the trend of people saying the new cabin is noticeably smaller than all previous Tundras is spot on.

Current year Tacoma double cabs have more rear seat space than the new Tundra double cab.

I actually first sat in a Crewmax(no pix), adjusted the driver's seat to driving position, and when I opened the rear door I was shocked. That cabin is also noticeably smaller.

Then when I did the same in the DC, I laughed, took a pic, and shut that door forever. Seriously looks like they took a Crewmax seat and stuffed it in the DC. The rear seat has twice as much padding as the front.

 

I feel ya there. But my friends/family are total kooks. Also, when you live this close, it’s not worth wearing shoes unless you’re the driver.

 

I honestly think the 2.5 gen CM is too big. I'm admittedly only 5'10" but I don't see why I would need to be able to sit with my legs crossed in the back seat of a truck.

 

Actually about two inches from the end of rails. In Tacomas I’m all the way back on the rails. In Tundras, I’m like two inches from the end of the rails.

Some dealers slide front seats all the way back to take front pix. Then, slide them all the way forward when taking back seat pics. And by some, I mean most.

 

Simple fact is that many of us are empty-nesters and won't have anyone in the back seat, pretty much ever.
Hell, Nissan has a 'rear seat delete' pkg. in their clam door Titan, a great idea.

With kids around the CM would be the ticket, but now it's just a beast, especially for those of us hauling truck campers and needing a 6.5 bed.

 

This is where my drivers seat position was in a crewmax, you can use the center console as reference. I’m 6’2” with a 34” inseam. The front seats and console are the same on the double cab. The position you had the front seat on that double cab I would be way stretched and would need the steering wheel pulled back. I like to sit closer to the dash, in general. Just shows everyone is different. I suspect my seating position would allow an adult to sit comfortably behind me in a DC.

 

In comparison to the previous generations, to me the 2022 back cab looks like it was cut straight down...very similar to the Chevy and Honda Ridgeline. Look at the previous versions (2007 to 2021) and you can see the cab slants backward, giving more interior space and seat room. I dislike how the cab has been cut, the site line from the side view has really changed and can explain why the decrease in cab size.

 

Everyone seems to get the payload and door sticker payload confused.

the actual payload of the new Tundra is what the manual claims, much higher than the door tire sticker.

The door sticker payload is the max using the p-rated tires that the truck comes with. With LT tires, the payload will be exactly as the claimed spec in the manual.

 

Yes, exactly as stated. Door jam sticker specifically and directly relates to tire load capacity. With LT tires, your car can safely exceed that sticker value.

Even if you look at a bare bones TUndra without any added options, the door, or more correctly, the tire load sticker would indicate lower payload compared to what the truck is capable and listed in its spec.

ps: the reason the sticker supersedes any spec is that the tires are usually the weakest link, having limited max psi capacity

 

Is the max carrying capacity of the p rated tires less, equal, or more than the door jamb gvwr?

 

im pointing out the logical problem with @Tundra-G ‘s argument. Lt tires are not limiting the door sticker gvwr if the p rated tires on the sticker have a far higher weight rating than what toyota lists for the truck. I personally overload my tundra without concern, however the gvwr does not go up with lt tires

 

No truck maker would willingly de-rate their truck and give up valuable marketing potential

 

3/4 tons are actually doing this for commercial reason. Some 3/4 tons have a GVWR up to 11500 lbs, but over 10000 lbs GVWR for commercial vehicles means they need log books and to visit scales in some jurisdictions, so Ford and GM for sure offer a de-rated 9990 lb GVWR 3/4 ton option. That way the vehicle is still a 'light-duty' and does not need log books or scale visits anywhere.

 

P rated tires can carry more weight than your GVWR. Don't worry about it.

 

My understanding is that GVWR is an arbitrary value and determined by how much load the tires can take dynamically, together with how the company wants the vehicle to be classified when sold in a particular state.

I may be wrong in this, but again, my understanding is that the door jam sticker is mainly a tire load sticker, and the GVWR is directly correlated to it.

 

Tires are definitely not the only factor and it's definitely not arbitrary.

 

The door size isn't the problem but the direction in which it opens. On my Tacoma AC the reverse opening doors give you good access to slide larger items in. On a Tundra with its people oriented door the opening aligns with the seat so getting big stuff over onto the flat floor may be tricky. Hard to say without seeing one in person. On my Tacoma I went as far as to remove the silly jump seats and console that really messed up that space. I suppose you could do it on a DC Tundra.

Like you guys I have no need to carry people in the back so I am leaning towards a DC with 6.5 bed. But Toyota's limitations on trims, options and color combinations might make it difficult for me to find what I want. So it may come down to compromising on one or more of color, trim, or bed length. Seems crazy to have to compromise on anything when you are talking about $50-60k, but there we are.
