Which is pretty standard. Look at what Ford did with the Bronco, it was announced a year before people could take deliveries on it. The first official Toyota teasers started popping up in June and it will be available in December, so not that bad.

I'm really wondering what some of you were expecting in this truck. When you go back to the threads about what we wanted to see, many people were asking for these exact numbers. Close to 2000lbs payload check, 12,000lbs towing check, mid 20's mpgs check, better interior check, better technology check, more power check. Toyota gave us pretty much everything we asked for and now that it's here, many of you are pissed. I guess some were expecting a unicorn, but they gave us what we asked for, I'm going to give it a couple years because I really enjoy no payments right now, but as long as the toyota reliability stays around, this will be my next truck.

I'm not doubting you, but I used to get 30 in my '17 GTI on the highway and it had a tall 6th speed OD gear. It was probably punching a hole through the air half the size of a 1500, and had an engine that was less than half the size, and I'm guessing it weighed 2/3 as much. 28+ without a lot of electrification or a small diesel is probably going to be a stretch. Honestly, I think the manufacturers know that and it's why they're going to electric. This way, they can put the tow hooks back on and care less about the drag coefficient going forward.

Edit: keep in mind, every MPG gained is harder than the one before. The things you have to do to go from 14 to 15 are nothing compared to what you have to do to go from 27 to 28.

    This ^^^

Are the numbers better than the big three? No... they're competitive, but not better. The real "world beater" aspect of this truck is that Toyota has managed to make a pickup that competes with the big three on paper, but with Toyota quality and (most likely) at an affordable price.

I don't doubt that he can get those numbers, but they are not normal numbers.
I have seen over 20 mpg in my Tundra if I go 60mph, but that is not normal driving either.

Most of the people on here are not going to get that benefit of a 2k payload because they will buy upper trim levels. I think the biggest issues is the fact the gen 2 truck was so groundbreaking when it came out that we were expecting Toyota to do the same and they didn't. Plus the gen 2 truck was one you could actually work, gen 3 not as much. Toyota is chasing a different dynamic this time and it alienates a portion of the current tundra owners.

Fair point - overall I think they delivered on many of the things people were looking for and I could see buying one in a few years like you.

I did expect the power and MPG numbers to beat the ford 3.5. The power numbers are slightly better, but the MPG's appear to be worse. Not that this matters a ton, but if those 0-60 numbers are true then yikes..

But that's the same as Ford and the others. If you start comparing apples to apples, the higher trim Fords are very close in payload to the Tundras numbers. Back in 2007 there was also a lot more room for upgrades in a 1/2 truck. I honestly believe we are much closer to the limits of the 1/2 ton capacity this time around so ground breaking really isn't possible. You will be able to work just fine with this truck. With a mod or two to fit you personally, it will be just as good if not a better work truck than the current Tundra.

    A bunch
Toyota sells whatever Tundras they could make. 2020 they were at full capacity and could pump out whatever the factory, which was shared with the Tacoma could push out. In 2021 they hit the same wall the domestics did, just later, with chips being the limiting factor on number of trucks they could make. Once the chip shortage is sorted out they will have a higher capacity at TMTX since the Tacoma production is being moved to Mexico, so if they keep selling all the Tundras they make they will sell more 3rd gen's than they ever did with the 2nd gens

I can't speak for anyone else but I wanted over 2000 lbs in a 4x4 SR5 with the big fuel tank, not 1900 lbs in a 4x2 SR with a 22 gallon tank.

The 0-60 numbers are questionable. I'm sure there is a lot of torque management going on just like with the current truck turn the nannies off and tow haul on and you wake it up. They were squeeling the tires which could kick in the traction control. We don't know the Tru numbers on the weight they were towing , but in the fast lane video it was a full second faster to 60 while towing.

Like I said, I'm not doubting him. EPA ratings for the small diesel they no longer sell were 30 mpg highway. It's possible in some form.

Maybe I should have said it differently. What I was trying to say was that despite every physical advantage my GTI had that should have given it better mileage, it only beat his truck by 6 mpgs. That doesn't sound like a lot, but each successive MPG is harder to achieve than the one before it. Now, ironically, I got 60 miles per hour whether I was doing 60 or 90...which I never understood. But on paper my GTI got 25% better mileage. That's really not much when you stop to think about it.

But, point being to take a truck from 24 to 28+ is harder than it seems. People are already complaining about the active aero air dam. If it got 28+, it'd be doing a lot more of that kind of thing.

    "Truly pioneering"

Rear locker - I believe the Titan is the only full size truck that doesn't already get one.
Killer multimedia - My understanding is Ram still leads the pack in this regard (when it works).
Optional lift kit - Sierra AT4 and Silverado TrailBoss?

^This. For me. In 2007 Toyota blew the doors off of the competition. Not so much this time and it is disappointing. One thing seems certain, with the 'average' specs of the Gen3, they won't be able to go another 15 years before Gen4 needs to come out.

Car and Driver posted a review of the Tundra today, and they mentioned something I've been disappointed about....lack of AWD.
C&D made the point that with more power, torque and an open diff, "it will be a handful in the rain".

Ugh, only 2 trucks made by Japanese brand, and I can't get AWD in either, only domestic brands. Fark

No doubt, people also don't realize that 4-5 mpg increase is 20-30% increase which is huge.

but alienate current tundra owners that are part of forums? thats maybe 2-5% of the general tundra buying public which if i remember is not what toyota is going after. the general tundra buying public will be happy with what toyota has improved upon from the 2nd gen, and sadly the wife and me are in that camp. do we want the towing of the F150/1500? no, do we want the hp/tq of the those also? no, do we want better features than what our 2018 platinum had? yes.

for us the mpg and spec are just icing on the cake for what we really want, creature comfort improvements that we wish we had in our 2018. at our age we are at the point of looking for long term ownership with exactly the creature features to make life enjoyable for the long term.

i bought her 2018 platinum in dec-2017 on the basis of swapping it out for a 3rd gen in about 4-5 yrs. only thing holding us back is whether the hybrid will worth the cost over the NA engine. we dont tow maybe once 1 yr at most (havent in the last 2 yrs) but the mpg boost over the supposedly 17/22 should it be 2-3 mpg better might sway us to go hybrid (over the term of 7-10 yrs)

but dont get me wrong, mpg is not our driving factor, its maybe 4th or 5th on our list.

It appears many expected it to tow like a locomotive, have a 10k payload, get mileage like a prius and make 1000 hp.
I agree they have upped the numbers to be competitive, but nothing world beating. My biggest gripe is the lack of rear seat room in the DC configuration.. it's sized almost like a tacoma access cab (hyperbole but not off by much)

also, if the truck gets modded (like most of us will do) then you can kiss the mileage goodbye anyway. My current truck gets an average of 12 combined with 34's and a lift, plus I'm heavy on the right pedal. I can't imagine a lifted 22 tundra with bigger tires, a lift, all the aero dam garbage removed (which I will do) and add a few other items and your mileage will not be anywhere near the rated amount anyway.

I agree it's a small percentage, I never said it is wasn't. But people wonder why do much disappointment on the forum, a good majority of those are in that small percentage. The new truck works for you and that's great, you'll stay with Toyota. The new truck won't work for me so they lost me as a customer.

Are you talking that towing test by tfl? If so that's not a real good test, both trucks should have the same trailer for a good comparison.
