Last year I bought a John Deere D140 Riding Mower w/ a 48" deck. Its been at the dealer for the last month getting fixed. They dropped it off and 2 days later it wouldn't start for an entirely different reason. The damn thing only has 8 hours on it.

I have the BIG ITCH for a zero turn. I started a side mowing business for some extra cash. I've looked at some of the entry level Scag mowers and I just dont know that I can justify spending 6-8k on an entry level mower.

Im also considering looking at Gravely. I wasn't really impressed with the Toro models.

Educate me fellas! You're all so good at spending my money.

Husqvarna 48" rider from lowes. 7 years old and the deck is beginning to separate. Not bad I guess but not good either. Will be looking for a zero turn next but like everything else I want, waiting on funds to replenish since building the house.

I like a zero turn but also like to drink a beer when I mow. Zero turns make that a little difficult lol. We have an old Ford tractor with a finish deck on the 3 point hitch and i can just cruise right along with a beer and my ipod.

I have a Gravely Promaster 148z. Bought it used with 300hrs in it. Thing is built like a tank and is full commercial. I mow ~2 acres with it, so it's by no means abused. I've had it for about 5 years now and I've had to replace the original battery this year (from 2005). I had my hydro belt break this year, and I replaced my PTO belt. Other than that, haven't had to touch it.

If I had to do it over again, I probably wouldn't get another. I would look for something with suspension and a bigger deck (54"+) simply for edging and reaching under trees.

I have a 1997 bobcat 48"walk behind with a 15hp Koehler. Just like the one in this pic. I bought it in high school to do my parents and 2 neighbors lawns. Then grew a bit to 5-10 lawns, During college I cut about lawns per week with it. Made my own schedule , it was great. Paid my way through college mowing lawns. I had a little trick too...i would fertilize lawns for free, cost me about $50 a year per lawn....but they looked better so I'd get referrals and I'd end up needing to mow more frequently so it paid off for sure. I still use it on my lawn and it runs great. Sharpen the blades often (used to do it weekly in college) change the oil , keep up with greasing it and keep the air filter clean. Best piece of equipment I've ever owned.

42" Deere L series. Gets the heavy lifting done. Also have a yardman push mower 22" with a Honda engine. Beat the hell out of that Honda. It's a damn tank. I won't buy any "small engine" (push mower, pressure washer, paint sprayer, generator, etc) that isn't powered by Honda.

If you're looking at one for a business, look at some used Kubota's. unbreakable machines.
Another Japanese manufacturer getting smart and operating in Texas. Can't go wrong there!

Back when I had a lawn mower, it was a Sears riding mower with a a 5hp Tecumseh engine. my Dad bought it in '75 and gave it to me when he upgraded. I gave it to a friend in about 2010 when I no longer had any yard to mow. Regular maintenance works wonders. In case you were wondering, I didn't move. My wife's an avid gardener and has taken over the entire yard.
Here's part of the front yard.

What do you think of a walk behind for less than flat terrain? I've been told that they're much better for hilly areas than zero turns. Pretty versatile?

42" Toro Zero Time Cutter. Cuts great and quick. As for getting down in a ditch, it sucks. My next mower will be a AWD rider.

54" hustler fast track superduty. When I was looking for a commercial duty zero turn it could not be beat for cost vs features. Suppose to be the original zero turn mower. Fabricated heavy decks hd hydraulics. Kaw engine. 2 years on it. No complaints.

Husqvarna Z248F w/ a Kawasaki twin. This new 48" fab deck is a beast. Cuts much better than any of the old fab decks and even better than my previous 46" stamped deck. I might be a little biased since I help design the cutting systems on our rider products, but I'm very happy with it.

We do have a cup (beer) holder built in, but with a little practice controlling the sticks with one hand and holding your beer in the other becomes second nature (not that I condone mowing while intoxicated). Haha :cheers:CC23E85B-4D91-41F0-9962-C7824F4F1FEA.jpg

Can't have too much beer when you're mowing. Gotta keep the lines straight! When I was just a young kid I used to have a neighbor who was a hardcore alcoholic. At least twice a year he would crash his mower. I remember watching him hit one of his clothes line poles and damn near fell off the mower lol. Luckily it shut off when his ass left the seat. I don't condone that cuz it's dangerous but when I'm on the tractor that's my relaxation time lol

JD X320 48" cut and a Honda 22" cut push for the trim for our 3 acres. Most of the JDs at HD and Lowes have the BS engine which I think are junk, we got our's from JD and it comes with the twin V Kawasaki.

I love my walk behind. It's a zero turn as well, obvious not a sit on zero turn though. It works great on flat as well as pretty steep slopes. I have used several ride in zero turn, mostly scag turf tigers, they don't do nearly as well in hills and slopes. Some side slopes I've cut with my bobcat I wouldn't come with r feet of with a ride on zero turn. If I had a huge 2+ acre flat yard I'd get a ride in zero turn. But even the slopes in my yard are a bit too much. The conpany tgat mows my neighbors lawn bring a rider and a walker to his yard because they can't ride on some of the slopes he has.

For home owner use of stay away from the scags, they are pricy. You probably don't need hydro drive either. Mine is belt drive and I still have original belts. I my issue ever was mowing in the rain, which most can avoid doing.
I'd recommend a bob cat if you can find one around you. Husky makes some decent ones too. Buy from a small lawnmower shop, no a big box store they stuff is not the same quality.

I use lime on my grass every year. Sometimes twice a year. Makes a big different. I fertilize in the spring with crab grass preventer and I use a winterizer in the late fall. No 4 or 5 steps for me. I don't water it because I can't afford to. It late July is brown out a bit during dormancy it or perks back up. Trick is sharp blades and mow it high. Around 3 inches. This keep the grass healthy and the weeds away
