My first 5K mile Toyotacare appointment is in a few days. Dealership was clear that I would not be getting a free oil change even though I have been towing regularly. Their oil change only costs $110, so ...

today was my 2nd DIY oil change, 5K miles (1st was 2K miles). Found some more metal flakes on the filter, not as many as the first oil change, but one of them was 4mm long this time around.

My dealer and every dealer in my area can take that ToyotaCare and shove it up their ass. I went to do my lift and the wheels were over torqued by a lot. I also just came back from a 2700 mile trip and did an oil change. The filter was black and it only had around 5k since the last oil change, leading me to believe they didn’t change it. Also switched over to 5w-30 since the 0w-20 was making the engine sound like a diesel and had lower oil pressure with the 20 vs the 30. Also did the rear end. Found a long thin shaving and the plug was full of metal sludge from the gear breaking in. All this at 16k

How big of a noise change would you day you got from going to 5w 30? My tundra makes to much noise for me I’m going to swap the oil to 5w 30 after I finish a trip I’m currently on

I added a magnetic drain plug to the engine oil pan as well, just for that extra level of protection.

I wish I would have recorded it. Every time I was in a drive through, I could hear my whole valve train sound. It was annoying to say the lease. Cold start was the worse. Noises everywhere that an engine shouldn’t make. Best of all besides getting rid of the noise was, oil pressure. At 2k rpm the oil pressure before wouldn’t even hit the half way mark. Now with5w-30, it’s right at the halfway mark. All manufacturers in the US are going to thinner oil for CAFE standards and a .1 increase in mpg. The Lexus UX model uses 0w-16, I haven’t even seen that oil on the shelves yet.

The filter is there to catch metal. The rear end has mag drain plug. I change rear and front diff at 5000 miles. If I feel frisky I change the oil an filter at 4000 miles.Only problems I ever had with Toyota was with cracked heads on 2002 3.4.Total disappointment. The cams and cyl walls had very little wear at 144000.miles.Always use synth oil and gear oil.Only problem with diff was leaking inner axle seal.Im an aircraft mech for a living.I also cut oil filters to check for wear on older vehicles to get heads up on wear.

@rugerm44 I saw a post that mentioned there no stop for the seals, presumably leaks then caused from seals mounted in a bit too far. Any thought about that? Looking to change out seals in the near future.
