Guys do it all the time in the Tacoma and it’s got a similar composite bed. Don’t haul gravel back there if you’re worried about looks haha

Lol, care to explain how making a better truck in every single metric ignores any demographic?

How is this any different than when the Gen 2 came out?

I swear folks must be trolling at this point.

The jury is still out for me for this 2022 Tundra.. why are you guys not talking much about the front grill. Yes its an F U grill but its not practical. No tow hooks and it will be hard to add a Winch because the grill goes all the way down. Previous generations were separated. I just traded in my 2017 to a 2021 for only an extra $7k. I will seat back and wait to see other guys modifications before i pull the trigger in maybe 3 years!

Honestly the grill has already grown on me and I don't even see it as huge anymore. It's color matched, but it looks like the grill and bumper are still separated and it won't be any harder to put a winch on than the current model. Supposedly tow hooks will be an option, but I dont think any of us have seen where they could be mounted yet.

    A bunch
When the gen 2 came out it truly was ground breaking - all the other manufacturers were then stuck playing catch up. Gen 3 speaks more about refinement to me - they took the big issues and improved on them, all while keeping within the new 'half ton car' that the majority of buyers are now looking for. Those buyers have no idea they're putting 2000 lbs in the bed, whether the truck is rated for it or not. They want MPG as the main number, they want a soft cushy ride for daily driving. Toyota targeted them, not truck buyers - for that we are being pushed into HD's. And Toyota is smart enough to stay away from the HD game - it's dominated by fleet and 'my family has always bought Ford so I always will'.

Gen 3 wasn't ever going to be about 4000 lbs payload in a half ton or towing 15000 lbs. The only number they would want to be class leading would be MPG, but even then just getting competitive with that takes away the biggest argument people had for not buying the Tundra. So many comments on Youtube videos are 'Tundra is so bad on fuel, Ford/GM get 10 MPG better'. Get rid of that and Toyota is going to be happy with the product they're putting out.

I think pages 2-570 were devoted to talking about the grill

as for being “practical”: manufacturers are faced with a dilemma - make more powerful engines while also making them more fuel efficient. Enter the twin turbo V6 (which for obvious reasons requires a lot of cooling).

have you seen the videos of the drive train sitting on the frame? It has a bazillion rads at the front end. The grill is huge, but looks like it is every bit “practical” that it needs to be.

I’m with you on the tow hooks though. Can’t wait to see what the workaround is…

Just drove by a dealer in the Houston area and up on a ramp they had a lime green 22 4 Runner TRD. That was the only one of anything 22 there that I could see?? FYI

agreed. But does this mean ripping the fancy auto air dam out? Probably. That’s the workaround

It is practical for increased cooling, tow hooks are available, and there will be plenty of after marker bumper options for winches.

I agree, though the new design looks like it will require more :sawzall: for aftermarket bumpers. Not really shocking given that they very clearly brought the design language of the 4Runner to the Tundra line, and that's pretty much the norm on 4Rs. Hasn't stopped tons of people from installing every accessory under the sun on them, though.

The hooks will probably be behind the air damn which doesn’t come down until high speeds so it wouldn’t be in the way of normal tow hook use. And you can always take the air damn off or disconnect it if turning it off isn’t an option which it probably is.

I think you could argue that we are just about at the limits of a half ton truck by definition so the idea of it blowing the competition out of the water this time around really wasn't possible. The areas that can still be improved on is mpgs. Payload and towing are essentially maxed out for a half ton. Even usable horsepower and torque are just about maxed out. The next frontier is going to be a full on electric or alternative fuel truck such as hydrogen. As long as this truck is comparable to the big three, but has Toyota build quality, I will be happy.

Payload ratings can be obtuse. My 2020 Mustang Bullitt has a 1200 lb 'cargo capacity' Kind of ridiculous that my 2017 TRD PRO Truck can only carry 320 more pounds. Bolderdash.........

I hope it will be that easy! From the looks of photos and videos thus far, it will be tough to have a bolt on tow hook that will clear the bottom lip of the front bumper. The approach angle is already not looking good. Imagine having a tow hook even lower than that front bumper! upload_2021-10-10_10-33-14.jpg

    https://youtu.be/N8PkEJZeAoY
(Above is a link to a video we’ve all seen, but at 1:33 they show under the front bumper. Hard to say, but looks like the auto air dam isn’t installed.) But from the angle this video was taken, the frame where tow hooks could be mounted is tucked up pretty high.

Oh well, hopefully in two days we will have an answer. So far looks like Cbi off-road will be making a killing on aftermarket winch bumpers!!

edit: maybe the factory accessory tow hooks will poke right through the grill near the led fog lights?

Could they bolt into those holes between the skid plate and the antisway bar?

that’s where I’m thinking, but it looks like that part of the frame is about 4-6” higher than the bottom lip of the front bumper (could just be the angle of the video).

hook a tow rope up to that, good bye plastic bumper!

Yeah, I guess it would all depend on the shape of the tow hooks.

    Or this:

    upload_2021-10-10_10-59-54.jpg

I know it’s just a rendering. And like someone else said, it will likely require lots of cutting.

but… it solves the tow hook complaints, approach angle complaints, AND the grill aesthetic complaints!

Going tomorrow to look at a 2 Wheel drive TSS 21 that he claims they are not marking up in fact says he can get me a discounted price???

Like many, I have many friends with the 'other brands' with supposedly better fuel economy. They all require premium fuel, and real world mileage is at best 2-3 MPG's better than my Tundra that happily consumes regular. Add in cost of ownership, reliability, etc., the EPA ratings are ridiculous.

Surprised no one is mentioning the horrendous approach angle of the long and low nose of the new Tundra. Will be interesting to see what the Aftermarket does with replacements of that giant low bumper and snout.
