I was walking through a field with my daughter, picked up a big rock and threw it, just for the hell of it and a bird flew into it. It wasn’t very happy.

 

I was very excited about it. My wife wasn’t.

 

You didn’t miss out on much. My sister and neighbor were throwing them up in the air as high as they could towards each other. I was standing with my neighbor. I remember her screaming for me to move but I didn’t know which way to go. I also remember that it hurt. A lot.

 

Ouch.

 

Makes you wonder what person thought “heads up” was a good warning phrase

 

We had an old set growing up. We never used them as intended and had similar results to your experience. I can understand why they were outlawed, and also why tetanus shots were so important.

 

In the construction circles where I worked for my entire career, the warning phrase hollered, was “headache”, not “heads up”
Sometimes people would look up, but usually you throw an arm over your head or step under anything around like a scaffold or overhang.

 

So I got my first compound bow at age 16. Naturally, the first thing I did was fire an arrow straight up and then run for cover

We played that game with my uncle Jack Daniels (yes....that was his real name...and yes....he drank). One day buzzin a bit, brought it out and shot one up and we all lost it. we all ran and squeezed into a lil pump shed and it came through the shed's tin roof and hit the water softener that was in there too. the whole shed wasn't but about 5'x5'. we stopped playing after a few minute discussion on if we should keep playing....and if we should tell our parents.
