Just bought an 05 Tundra DC TRD 4x4, now what?

Weird, sorry for the confusion. I guess maybe it's just that yours is a double cab? If you look at Dave's '04 access cab on the 1st page of this thread, his is like my '06 access cab. You could stuff almost anything over in that passenger's side! Spare battery and air compressor? No problem. This is what Mine looks like, pulled after a recent detailing, although the potato-quality pic doesn't do it justice. Your engine bay paint looks way the hell better than mine.

 

PS - I don't think your timing belt looks bad at all, I've seen far worse. That actually doesn't look like it has too many miles on it IMO. Wish you had more info on when it was last replaced. Too bad the previous owner didn't share that info!

Nice, I’ll add it. Would you guys recommend going ahead and doing spark plugs and radiator? I know Someone mentioned something about transmission fluid mixing with coolant.

 

Maybe I need to get creative with that extra space. Give credit to the PO on the condition of this gem of a truck.

The belt looked nearly brand new. Actually, the seller contacted me today and shipping a box to me with spare air filters, remote for headunit, and a stack of papers related to the truck.

 

I changed my rad because it sprung a leak so I upgraded it. My truck has 180K and transmission fluid is nice and red try to replace it often. Just had the filter and fluid replaced.

 

I prefer the electric brake unit. My 06’ has a very modern brake feel compared to my 07’ Sequoia with vacuum booster. The sequoia feels like brakes on a 90’s suburban. The Tundra is close to a modern 1/2 ton.

Also, bleeding the brakes is simple. Hold down the brake and crack the bleeder. Electric motor flushes the fluid it one shot.

285k and still running strong on full factory braking system, minus pads, shoes and drums.

 

The timing belt don’t look too bad, but it had some miles on it, new timing belt is Matt black, not shiny.

 

Start saving your pennies. If you keep it long enough, and with that frame I would, you'll need a master cylinder someday.

 

You have to buy the whole assembly? Is that what makes it the 'nightmare'?

 

Is your truck equipped with traction control/ VSC?

 

I just did a quick search on the McGeorge catalog and found that. I have an 06 and was pissed when I had to pay $800 for the whole assembly.

Hopefully you get another 10 years and 100k before you have to deal with it.

 

Nightmare trying to find one at a reasonable price. Nightmare for some who got stranded and spent days trying to get someone to send them the right part. In general, it's just not an easily sourced part, and it's the most expensive brake/MC config for the 1st gen trucks AFAIK.

 

His truck is mint tho, it could be years b4 that MC go bad…enjoy your brand new old tundra, deal with it when it’s time…

 

This. My truck has 269k miles and the MC is fine. If it does go out, I'll do the rear disc brake upgrade instead.

 

Thanks for the heads up about that MC. I expect to have to put money in the truck as it ages and parts fail, but it will be well worth it to me.

 

After looking at the paperwork, I didn’t notice any TRD off road package documented anywhere, but I did find a receipt on him adding the TRD stickers back in 05. I checked the rear shocks and don’t see any Bilsteins - only what look like black stock shocks so I think those are purely cosmetic TRD stickers.

Also, no dice on timing belt replacement paperwork

 

Toyota recommend 90k for timing belt, but if he don’t tow or gun it every stop light it could go over 100k. I don’t know 1st gen, but on my 19 tundra TRD off-road is only 4 different shocks.
