Dirt Bikes and Tundra

Tony what year is your bike? I ask because I was looking for a Boyesen pump like the one you have, but I can only find fitment up through the 2017 model for the 250R.

How do you like that Boyesen? Have you noticed much of a difference?

 

Yo! It’s a 2017. I bought the pump directly from boyesen’s website. I haven’t noticed a difference really, I mainly bought it for looks haha. I’m sure it does something tho because the impeller is twice the size of the stock one.

Now almost 65, I got rid of my Yamaha racing grade dirt bikes a few years ago ago, mainly because I just didn't ride enough and now I have to actually be careful, which I hate.

Looks like its time for a Side By Side old man golf cart, thinking hard about a Yamaha RMAX 1000 2 seat recreational rig. Fast enough to be fun, but mainly for going to collect firewood and explore. Now that I live in Idaho I can catch trails out the back of my yard. I might get an ATV too, gotta find the money though.

I still have the kids tiny bikes a CRF 50 and a 70, and I also have a little Kawasaki 110 kids bike. They are kinda fun to keep around.

The only adult bike I still have is a 2008 DRZ 400 with few miles on it. It was set up for cross country riding, but I've never ridden it much, I might sell it after I get the old gas out of it.

Anyway, don't ever give up having fun.

 

The Tundra is a great truck to have for hauling and pulling toys, I love my Tundra.

Great pics, I love that bike. I had an early 2000's YZ250. My favorite bike of all time, I kept it in perfect condition for a long time and finally gave it to my son about 3-4 years ago, because its was too hard to go riding in the SF-Bay Area. Thank God I'm out of CA now, I can finally ride, own guns, hunt, and explore without the California BULL SH*T.

I liked my 2 stroke better that the 4 stroke I had.

Someone came out to WW Motocross Ranch yesterday and shot some pics of us vet guys running around the track. So happy to still be doing this at 52 y/o.

 

Pulled the stock clutch out, looks like it got a little toasty. Replaced with Hinson fibers, steels, and springs. Clutch is noticeably harder to pull with the stiffer springs but should be a big improvement. Also got a new lid!

 

I have only ever used the Shoei VFX-W helmets. Love them. Recently switched to the Alpinestar SM-10. So light and all the new technology.

 

Same here, this is #3! Just wish Shoei would make a carbon fiber shell. That Alpinestar is nice helmet!

 

The Michelin Starcross 5 Medium might be the best all around from your list. But there might also be others that will do better that are "not" on your list.

 

I am a Dunlop kinda guy. The MX 53 would be a good choice for those conditions as well.

 

Wife and I just picked up a couple of TW200s. Picked up hers with the trailer, picked up mine all the way down in CT by taking off the tool box and putting it in the bed.






Now... we're looking at some off-roading vacations for next year, and we have this problem: We want to tow our Bunkhouse camper with the Tundra and fit both bikes in the bed of the truck. (See camper below...)


BUT it seems that they're a couple of inches too long to keep the tailgate up if they're in straight. We want to be able to have the ramps in without worrying about straps coming loose, etc...

Has anyone tried to put a rail on the front of the bed, or a couple of chocks in the bed in order to fit two bikes in that need to have the forks turned in order to fit into the bed? If so, would you mind sharing pix of your setup?

 

Buy a compressor to take along on your trips so that you can deflate the rear tires when loaded in the truck?

 

Hmm... That might just work.

Although... leaving the bike to sit on flat tires for a couple of days while we drive? Not sure how that will affect the tires.

 

Think I'm going to get a trailer or motorhome next year, this was just going to practice.

Angle the front tire(s) into the corners of the bed. See if that works.

 

I just saw this video of a guy loading two bikes in and he angles the front tires into the center. Although I like your idea better as I'd like to get a couple of the swing-away style tool boxes.

 

Yup, great tire for ACP, Canyon, and Motoland. Will be just fine out on the trails, too.

 

Welp. Finally in a position to get another bike, and chomping at the bit to find the right one. Having a hard time with the unknowns of jumping back into it at 30 y/o, and how my body will handle things. I feel like my mind still knows exactly what to do, but 10 years and countless beers have added some regression in ability to react on the fly.

I raced 125A/250B moto and 125 A enduros locally when I was young(er). Not looking to get anywhere near that again, but would absolutely love to have rewarding track days, and get lost on single track out here again. Hopefully catch a handful of races on RMEC as life allows, too.

For those of you who jumped back into things after some time off, any advice is appreciated.

 

I went back at 39 y/o and started as a woods rider. At 18 I went to a street bike. only went back after I bought my 7 year old son his 1st dirt bike.

If my advice to you is just to start slow. You would be very amazed how quickly things come back to you. Just remember, you wanna continue to enjoy this for a long time so ride safe and ride with it in your means. In other words, don't be hitting the triple when you have no business doing so. I am 52 now.

 

In other news. I got my first REAL SUSPENSION yesterday. Re-valved and re-sprung by Craig at Enzo in Newark, Texas. Anyone have any experience with Enzo before? ​

 

An easier although probably more expensive way would be to buy a bed extender and keep the tailgate down.

 

Yes, Enzo does a great job. When I raced, I had a couple bikes revalved by Enzo. Only by the main California location ( that was the only location back then). I'm sure Craig does great work, too. He's an ex National level Motocross Pro. Usually a little on the stiffer side, but the hold up and bottoming resistance was always great. The faster I went, the better they felt. Putt around and they were incredibly firm. Race pace, amazing.

The best setup I had from them was with subtanks on the forks. Subtanks seem to have gone out of fashion in the past 10-12 years, I'm certain because everyone was experimenting with air forks, but they were great.

 

So I got back into riding about 6 months ago, and while I love my CRF250R I feel like the gears aren’t very tall. I do a mix of track and trail riding, and I feel like I progress through the gears quite quickly. I’m running stock sprockets (13t in front, 48t in back).

Have any of you changed up your sprocket ratios to find a good balance between trail and track riding? I know that’s like hunting for a unicorn, as top speed gains usually means acceleration losses. Just trying to find a good balance.

 

Sorry. I run stock Yamaha gearing. 13/50. Are you running at 18 or 19 rear wheel?

 

Try dropping a tooth or 2 in the rear. Going up a tooth on the front will be pretty a substantial difference. That was my main reason for getting a 450. I had a 2010 crf250 that was great on track and a great overall bike but on trails I constantly found myself looking for 6th or 7th gear haha it would run out of gear super quick on the trails, never played with the gearing tho.
