Just bought an 05 Tundra DC TRD 4x4, now what?

Hi All,

Found a listing for this last night and went to get it. 2005 Toyota Tundra Limited Double Cab TRD 4x4 with one owner and 99,000 miles. It was kept in great shape and the price was $15k. The truck sat for about a year but they kept the oil changed and cranked it every so often. I have a couple questions:

• Maintenance - I am expecting to do a tune-up on this truck since I don't know what has been done in the past. Thinking timing belt, water pump, idler pulleys, hoses, serpentine belt etc. Anything else I should be thinking about?
• Cosmetic - The previous owner painted the white fender flares black and I don't care for the look. Should I try to buy new ones or order some original white paint and repaint them? I also think I want to level the truck and get a little big bigger tires but nothing crazy.

Any thoughts or other suggestions? Will post a picture below. Thanks!

Welcome aboard, it sounds like you got yourself a nice find! That fender job from the previous owner is... something.

I would definitely hit everything you mentioned for maintenance. You'll want to do the lower ball joints and replace with OEM, those are nasty and can screw up other parts too when they fail.

I think you are heading down the right path on the maintenance items - then you will know exactly where you stand with the truck - add a fresh oil/filter change
I agree, I so not care for the black fender flairs either, some may but just not my thing either. I would get some original color match paint and paint them if it was me.

 

That's about where the dealership I picked mine up from had mine planned to be listed before I grabbed it. Fair price considering it's V8 and 4x4 and Limited package. Mine is also all-leather.

1st thing to do is check the condition of the timing belt. Grab a 10mm and pop off either the passenger side or driver side cover and inspect the belt for cracks etc. There may also be a sticker somewhere under the hood with the mileage and date it was changed if it's ever been done - if not, you need to do it, it's both far past its life in years and mileage, and if it breaks, your engine becomes a boat anchor.

Once that's done, we have no idea where you are or where your truck has been, so we can only guess if you've got frame rot, which is SUPER common in these trucks if they've spent time in a rust -belt state. Get under the truck with a flashlight. Inspect all the nooks and crannies for bubbling or rot. Drop the spare tire, check the framerails and crossmembers. Give it a good once-over.

Did the previous owner paint the fenders and grille black, or replace them? They come black from the dealership.

Two things to do here: Click the "Join Now" button at the bottom to look up service records on your truck and check for open recalls.
Likewise, you can just plug in your VIN to see how your truck was spec'd from the factory to dealership.

 

Welcome and agree with all the above, especially frame. We've seen way to many come thru here that was gorgeous on outside but about to fall apart underneath.

Plan to do CV boots if you level it. I'm with you on the flares. I like the white on white trucks. Maybe check your trans cooler line where it connects to the radiator and do a search for "pink milkshake" for pointers there. It seems fairly common the inner portion of that trans line fails and you get coolant and transmission fluid mixing. Not good.

Also do the rear diff vent mod. Might save you axle seals later on.

That is a nice looking truck. Even though you're in Alabama you want to get underneath and check out the frame for sure. I was looking at a 2004 a few weeks back. It was a one owner truck, for sale in Florida. However the seller didn't feel like telling me that he owned it it's whole life in Massachusetts and just moved to Florida a few months ago.

15 years on a timing belt is a long time. They say even if it looks good the ozone in the air that can rot it from the inside. Check out some threads on bleeding the brake fluid. That old of a truck some say yes, some say no. I know in my 06 with 160k, about 1,000 miles after bleeding the fluid I got a master cylinder leak and had to replace it. Coincidence, maybe, but since it's an $800 part from Toyota, not fun. Also, see about pumping some grease into the ujoints before you start doing alot of driving.

 

Agreed on the timing belt. I didn't drive it to work today for that very reason. I drove it home and don't want to move it until I lay eyes on the belt itself.

I crawled underneath the truck last night and couldn't find dirt much less rust. The truck was just as clean in the engine bay and underneath as the inside was. This truck is an Alabama truck since it was purchased in 2005. Garage kept. I'll drop some pics later.

The previous owner did paint them, they are glossy.

Thanks a bunch for that info, I was able to locate records from the dealer. Mostly oil changes, tire rotations, and something to do with an airbag. Nothing about timing belts

 

I'm going to guess TB isn't done, and that's why the PO sold it, didn't want to invest the $$

If you found a number of service records from the dealer, chances are they asked the dealer for a quote on the TB and sticker shock might've pushed them to sell.

The Aisin kit includes much of what you need for TB if you're confident doing it yourself but some feel it lacks a couple things.

Either way - hang out, keep us posted. Damn fine looking truck you got there, and some great options on it.

Oh hell yeah, that damn thang is golden. Big win right there. All the right options and the right price. Everything else is purely cosmetic if the 4WD works!

Looks good. Better than mine. But will comment, looks like you may have the 'nightmare' master cylinder. And I see there's no ABS squid above the passenger wheel well. Or wait ... what's that big controller box on the side of the MC?

 

Nice truck. Fender flares are hideous though. Best to get them painted to match.

 

Nice truck congrats hope to see your future mods. I just finished replacing the timing belt, water pump and couple more goodies snice I was in there. Also changed the rad for a Champion Core 3-Row.

 

Wish mine was half as clean. The. Again I've used mine in the Utah desert for a couple years and that's hell on undercarriage stuff. Nice find!

Fitment is great the only part that sucks it that the rad holder hooks don't line up. But all the bolt holes line up perfectly. Alot better then the plastic oem rad.

What is the nightmare MC? The box above the passenger wheel well isn’t present on mine but unsure what that is. I’ll see what the box on the driver side by the MC is tomorrow.

I’m glad to report the 4WD does work. Getting my homework done for the timing belt+ maintenance.

 

I posted all the parts for the timing belt and also water pump. The box above the passenger wheel is the abs module which looks like you don't have. You can see it in my picture with the rad.

I believe you abs module is attached to the MC. Maybe someone know more about the 05.
