What I heard was, while moving under 18 mph it is pure battery power. I assumed there is some battery usage at higher speeds as well.

there’s at least one every couple pages of a 2021 2nd gen owner saying how stupid someone is for spending 75k on the next pro after over paying for a truck that’s not being made any more.

18 MPH makes sense, remember when someone had the hydraulic assist start? Most of your bad MPGs are in the first 20 mph. IMHO they should have almost everything be hybrid up to 19 mph, it would really improve fuel economy all around. Especially all these FWD cars that have a AWD option, throw an electric motor back there with a small battery big enough to get you to 20.

If anyone from Toyota reads this, I'm available to sell my ideas in exchange for a salary. :)

The whole “up to 18mph” in electric mode thing is consistent with other Toyota hybrids. I own a Camry hybrid and it has an EV mode, where it’ll take you around in parking lot speeds, and if it exceeds a certain speed (around 20mph) then it jumps out of EV mode and the gas engine kicks on.

it looks like a big plotter, rolls a sheet out and plugs the model/trim into computer and it cuts out an exact match to the window. saves a lot of waste and time than doing it manually. its like 1/8" or is it 1/16" (never measured) from the edge of the window all around.

pretty slick, but then again thats all he does is window tinting, wraps (uses another same machine) and side jobs remote starts during the winter.

he does business windows (wraps), even did a hockey bus wrap and he installed our remote starts on the 14 4runner and the 18 tundra. does drone mobile or mycarcontrol (cheaper service of drone mobile)

I could be off base here but it seems people are disappointed with the 18 mph shutoff.

I would honestly argue that Toyota did a fantastic job on the surface. Obviously reliability and operability is yet to be determined.

I pay much attention to mpg’s and work at obtaining the best for each particular vehicle I own. And I typically try my best to operate said vehicles at their optimum zone if you will…

The two biggest mpg killers are accelerating from a dead stop followed by keeping a high speed during mountainous highway driving. And thirdly (this applies mostly to SUVs, CUVs, and any pickup) the faster you drive past the vehicle’s happy place the mpg’s decrease exponentially. Especially in heavier vehicles such as the 2.5 gen Tundra.

I feel that on the onset it’s a great idea because that’s the biggest killer in these trucks. And I am willing to bet it was the best weight trade off (battery/electronics). So far the glass is half full in the mpg department…because if they can get the mpg number they are claiming then it would really be a world beater. And I always felt Tundras and Toyota in general had the most accurate mpg’s.

most toyota's happy place is around 1800-2200 rpm mpg wise from what i have noticed since owning toyota's from the 1980's.

I am sure toyota has their reasons on the 18mph figure, Fords hybrid truck can go up to 45 mph some early reports say and there is a trick by tapping the brake at highway speeds that will let you cruise on electric only. The Fords mileage is not that great, considering it is a hybrid but the gas tank range is over 700 miles.

The Ford also has more towing and payload in the hybrid model if the reduction in payload and towing due to hybrid in the Tundra is true. I think the only thing they squeaked out was a little more hp and torque. MPG may be the big equalizer between these two.

I heavily researched the F150 and I have two family members that own them. I love Toyota trucks but the F150 are an excellent truck. Many of the F150’s “numbers” are sheer marketing BS IMHO. I take anything that Ford says with a grain of salt because I have not seen or read where the F150 hit the marks Ford said it could. Toyota is much better than that but the F150 is a very capable truck. As much as we complain about the Tundras number at least we know they are true…

From a distance, Its hard to tell the top of the line pro grill from this base work truck. On a flip note, this base one has body color door handles and the pro has black.

Also, I presume this whole “below 18 mph” thing is dependent upon which drive mode you’re in; e.g., a Sport or Sport+ mode would have both the MG and ICE running together from off the line.

Definitely agreed on the marketing BS. I own a 14' trailer; and while my previous truck ('13 F150 SuperCab 5.0) had no issues pulling it, the trailer 'pulled the truck' a bit more than one would want, and it wasn't exactly a light truck, either.

When I test drove my '20 Tundra, I asked them if they had any issues with me testing it out by pulling the same 14' trailer. "Nope, by all means," they said. So I did. The Tundra pulls the same trailer absolutely effortlessly. It was obvious to me that while the Big 3 play the marketing #'s game, Toyota just tells you what it's rated for, and I'm convinced that at least part of the low towing rating w/r/t the other manufacturers is because they pad in some safety margin - e.g., their max towing rating is what the Tundra can pull safely, instead of feeling you're 'fighting' what you're pulling.

gotcha... yeah that makes sense, but even though they use the same engine block, they are tuned completely different so we really can't glean much from those numbers.

edit: Hopefully we will know on Oct 12

The V-8 will definitely be missed. Toyota is now the only manufacturer to not offer a V-8. If buyers show their concern with their pocket book and not buy the new tt V-6 Toyota would have to bring it back. I know that won't happen though.

Some things I noticed in this video that I haven't anywhere else yet:

    - Tow mirrors are finally shown. Not a great discovery but nice to finally see them on the truck.
    - Availability of the hybrid version will not be until spring 2022. I know there was some who thought this only applied to the TRD Pro version, but, apparently it's all versions with the hybrid.

Is it just me or did that double cab get a lot smaller in the back? When I bought my truck in 16, I was able to fit fairly comfortably in the back seat and I'm 6'3. Maybe they just have the seat all the way back or maybe I am remembering wrong, but that seems like it got quite a bit smaller.

They got smaller, and I think the crew max did too. The more I see the truck and the more people dig into it on the various videos, I am not sure Toyota is going to really bring too many people over from other brands to buy the Tundra, sure they will sell them to toyota buyers that need a full size truck, and they will sell some to fanboys that want to look good at the mall.

But there are a few things missing that make me scratch my head tow hooks or location for a tow hook is one of them, that is kinda dumb move 101 for a truck, I just wonder what other little bits will be discovered over time. Storage is abysmal in this truck, to the point it almost makes it unusable for some people as well.
