Sounds like he was a strong man who knew how to take care of his family.

That's excellent. You sure your grandma wasn't really Granny from the Beverly Hillbillies? Sounds just like her. They don't make many grandmas like that anymore.

    Here’s my funny lion story.
I was in the middle of building another home and taking a little break. Meanwhile my sons 11 and 14 years of age have taken our 2 dogs for a walk down by the river, about a 1/4 mile away.
I am on the upstairs porch looking out over the meadow towards the river and I see the elder son running our way waving his arms! Remember, this is my son, he’s seen plenty of game and been hunting for a few years, so I figured it was something serious. I meet him midway across the meadow and he tells me that the dogs have treed a lion. We go back down there where he left his 11 year old brother with the dogs, and sure enough, there is a big male cat up a tree. I don’t have a gun so I tell my boys what to do. Get back a bit, keep an eye on the cats ears, and if he starts to crouch with his ears laid back, he’s getting ready to jump, so tell the dogs to “get him, get him” and make em bark. Then I take off hoofing it for home.
So now, a little back story. While I’m building this house, we’re living in a motor home and EVERYTHING is stored in boxes, tubs, and trunks. I spent 15 minutes and the only gun I could locate is my .44 mag ruger and the only ammo is wad cutters. I am a law abiding citizen so I also scoot to town and run into the local sporting goods store to buy a lion tag. Any chance you can finish this story yourself?

    Hmmm
I know that a Ruger Super Blackhawk 44mag is commonly used by lion hunters where I grew up, but also know that when hit square between the eyes with a 44mag that sometimes it deflects off the skull and leaves a very pissed off cat after it falls out of the tree.

It happened to my dad the one and only time he went cat hunting. It sent two hounds to the vet with their guts opened up, one more nearly lame from cuts across the shoulder, and damn near got to my dad’s friend (the guy that owned the hounds) before he got a 22mag into the eye to stop it. Would’ve been a B&C cat except it’s tail had been cropped in a fight when it was young - it was 180lbs and almost 7ft long but they estimated its tail should’ve been another foot long.

Yeah. Not as intense as a friend of his that went archery hunting for bear and almost got mauled by the bear he put an arrow in.

Yep - so was he. That’s why the bear hide ended up on his wall instead of him being a fish and game statistic. It was a huge bear too - the rug he had made was nearly 8ft nose to toes.
In his words, he emptied the 357 and his bowels simultaneously…

This old male was a similar size. My first shot was a little bit high. Missed the heart, got the lung. He jumped and ran about 30 yards and ran up another tree where he lay down on a branch hanging over the river. I let him rest a bit, maybe 20 minutes and then got where I could take a very secure resting shot to his head from about maybe 30 feet. He dropped straight off the branch into the river. I had the boys drag him home. We were definitely not lion hunting!
I did have a couple friends back then that were professional game guides selling lion hunts with mules to ride and dogs to chase the cats. I never cared for that, nor considered it hunting.

Yeah. Same for me. My dad is the same way, though he did say that hunt he worked harder than any elk, deer, or bear he had ever gotten. But after that one he didn’t ever have any interest in doing it again.

He also has a vertebrae in a bell jar on his mantle…with a broadhead stuck in it. That’s where his arrow ended up.

The butcher that handled game in our little rural town where we lived in AZ, had 2 spine shot elk vertebrae. They were old, previous season shots. It was amazing to see the bone growth around the broadhead. I just always wondered about the pain from having that stuck in the back. I have had some back pain, but that’s not in my league! lol

It did paralyze the lower legs. The thing holed up in some thick brush and crawled 50-60 yards from where he hit it.
He proceeded to follow it in there, and eventually was on his hands and knees before almost running into it in the brush…by which point it had started crawling back out toward him growling and grunting. He fell back on his ass, scrambled to draw his revolver and unloaded into its face. It stopped moving about 10 feet in front of him. He said he was pretty sure he sat there pulling the trigger on empty chambers at least twice around the cylinder after the last shot.

My first whitetail kill was a doe I hit in the spine with a 12 gauge. I was around 10 and waaaay too excited to have the shot. The front half flopped around and tried to get away, but the ass end wasn’t moving. My grandpa took care of it with a nice slice to the throat.

Okay, here’s another crazy stupid hunting story.
    Short one.
I shot a deer across a deep ravine and it dropped in its tracks. My wife, hunting close came over and I gave her my gun and said head to the truck. This way I would not have to deal with it while crossing the ravine and getting my deer back. I got over there and about the time I was getting ready to gut him, he started to get up on his feet. Apparently my shot just creased his head and knocked him out. I clobbered him with a rock. I am almost afraid to post this cause it sounds like bullshit. I just showed it to my wife who laughed and said ‘I remember that!’
