it will probably be a year before we have any chance to buy what we want in terms of options, color, etc. Toyota has mastered the feeding frenzy concept and I strongly suspect that production of the new Tundra is on par and they are going to limit supply to drive and keep prices up. COVID also provides a really good excuse to help sustain high prices.

Bottom line is I don't mind paying MSRP at a time like this.....but I aint gonna be forced to pay for 10k of dealer adds that I don't want or need. Mind boggling to say the least in times of looming inflation.

    That's all....

The current market has put dealers in a tough spot. They have to pay more for used cars so that they have some inventory, but at some point the supply will catch up with demand and they are going to be stuck with a bunch of used cars that they can't possibly get their money back out of.
I heard the other day about a dealer that paid $38k at auction for a one year-old RAV4 that when it was new had a sticker price of $35k. These are weird times for sure.

Actually, I think the North American sales of tundra trucks is such a small part of their international corporate earnings that it’s barely a blip on the radar.
That’s also, I think, why there’s been so few changes over so many years. It’s just not a big focus for them.
Can’t imagine any sort of short sighted conspiracy to manipulate prices. Now, individual dealerships will do anything to maximize their gains, for sure

I think that this is more of the issue, personally.

Dealers are having a tougher time getting a hold of vehicles, both new and used. There's a brand new Subaru dealership in my town here that at most will have 10 cars on the lot at any given time for the past year. It probably has a capacity for 200. The dealership has far fewer vehicles to sell. As a result, they mark up everything as much as humanly possible to make a dollar.

Do I agree with it? Absolutely not. Do I understand the "why"? Yup.

Listen to what I was told....I too often drive by the dealership and feel sorry for the sales folks as there appears to be nothing on the lot to sell. Well, a good friend of mine is friends with the GM of a three line dealership. The GM tells him they are making more profit than ever before, money hand over fist. How can that be I ask. Well, firstly, they had 30 sales folks and are down to 17. Second, everything coming in is sold before it arrives.....so Mr. Smith gets a call that his Denali is in and he can pick it up. Ad Valorum tax base is down since there is no inventory.....nor do they pay insurance on the inventory. Just repeating what I was told, true or otherwise.

Your right the dealerships WERE making stupid money when vehicles were in stock. Now many of the better dealerships with a loyal customer base are empty. I have a friend that works in the industry and have friends that do as well. And the reality is that sales people are getting laid off because there is not enough stock to keep everyone afloat.

funny, but it was actually a serious question. We were talking about how crazy the market is right now and how dealers were making lots of money so I wasn't sure what you were intending to accomplish by emailing a toyota media rep. Were you going to ask him to lower prices for us?

Honestly, it is time for the hype to end and Toyota needs to release more information. But be as it may, they are doing what creative marketing folks do, they are taking advantage of a situation and creating a feeding frenzy like never before. It has gotten old already.

But I was serious about the crawfish boil.....aaa eeeeee

My brother works for a boat dealer in Michigan. He told me they’ll sell all of their allotment of next years SeaDoos this year. He said he routinely sells boats to people sight unseen, and no price negotiation.

If the dealer can sell cars without having to deal with the cost of holding inventory then they can make a good profit. The problem is that buyers have become accustomed to walking around the lot, picking out exactly what they want from inventory, and driving away in a new vehicle within the next day or two. The business model is changing to the point where if you want to specify exactly what you want, you have to order it and wait for months before it arrives. That works for some buyers, but not all.

I think we will start seeing a trend of dealers being given a lower quantity (or less desirable configurations) for their allocations so that manufacturers can prioritize customer orders... I hear that's what RAM is doing currently. Dealers can't order any allocations for their inventory... only way to get a new one that isn't already on the lot is to do a customer order
