I don't understand why it can't do both, if not at the same time. It's got drive modes. Put it in sport, or tow/haul, and the gas engine comes on sooner and stays on longer so the electric motor is adding power. Put it in eco and do the opposite. Gas engine comes on later and turns off sooner so the electric motor is replacing it more.

That's very possible and would make sense. I'm just going off what he said in the Fast Lane Truck video where he made it a point to say that they designed the hybrid to add power not gas mileage.

A bit off-topic but I wanted to share a dealer experience I just had last night. I need two vehicles before March and it's looking like I may not get the Tundra I want before then and with the market being what it is I thought maybe I'd knock out the other vehicle I need (I can 'limp' along with one vehicle to middle next year if I have to). So I found what I wanted (luckily) only b/c the financing fell through on the buyer and it became available right when I was on the phone with the salesman. So I drove down to do the paperwork. The vehicle itself was in transit from the factory and wouldn't be in till early October. I told the salesman I also needed a new Tundra and would be back for it if this deal went good. No sooner than I say that he tells me they have a $2,500 mark up on the car I am getting ready to buy AND that they ordered it from the factory with paint/fabric protection and that adds another $1,620 to the price. I told him I didn't want that but he says sorry, it's built into the VIN since they ordered it that way. I tell him not possible manufacturers don't build VINs to include fabric or protection that those are 'upsale' items done at the dealer. He insists.

I tell him I'm done and that he just lost this and the Tundra sale. He says 'OK'.

This is the mentality of dealers now-a-days. It's going to be tough getting a 2022 Tundra anywhere near MSRP if this chip shortage continues into next spring.

Unfortunately it seems like people are going into panic mode with cars just like they did with toilet paper and everyone "needs" a new car right now. That salesman probably already has that car sold to someone else along with every tundra they will get in so he feels like he can be an ass and not budge on anything.

When I bought my Tundra in 16 I was planning on having it for 10 years. I may buy a new one a little sooner if I like it enough, but I'm glad I am not in any position where I feel I have to buy something new right now.

Does anyone know why MSRP has yet to be announced? Is it a matter of waiting for EPA ratings/certification or would there still be production changes at this point?

Probably. What irks me is the lie. No way the manufacturer is going to do the paint/fabric protection and build it into the VIN. So the next guy that comes along and falls for that line is going to pay an extra $1,620 AND NOT GET the fabric/paint protection he assumes was done at the factory.

Wow sorry to hear that. Can't wait for the day we can order directly from manufacturers. Dealers are such a waste of space. Worst part is there will be an idiot first in line to purchase those vehicles with whatever markup the dealer pleases. People enabling this behavior are part of the problem. Good on you for using your head and walking.

That and the fact that they charge $1,620 to spray a $10 can of scotch guard on the seats.

Couple of interesting snips from a YouTube reveal from Toyota somewhere. Cab configuration stuff and a 3” lift from the dealer by Toyota.

I think there is merit in how Tesla handles sales. No dealerships. I won't see it in my lifetime but these bloodsucking dealerships have to go. In this day and age no reason a manufacturer can't sell direct to the customer via a website. Do the financing/paperwork online and pick it up at a distribution center when it's ready.

Last time I took my Acura in for sales, they asked me if I bought the car there. I said no, was just bringing it to my local dealer for service. The lady said, "that's fine, they don't make any money on sales. the dealer makes all their money on service these days."

Tesla can get away with it. All they need really is to be affiliated with a body shop.

On some trim levels the top cover will be body color which helps to hide it, especially that wavy part, compared to the base model with the black top part.

The lead engineer stated in a TFLTruck video that the gears have changed, but he wouldn't say to what.

with a 10 speed it won't matter quite as much, you can have it all with that many clogs.

granny up front, nice close mids and a few talls for highway mpgs.

After 15 years looking at the old design Tundra die-hards were shocked to see the new one. Bad photos didn't help. I was in that camp of 'oh my it's ugly.' But I'm coming around and really starting to dig it. I think it's going to turn heads on the road - in a good way.

I personally love it, although I've got a Tacoma now. Not sure why so many are bashing a barely released vehicle that seems to address major complaints and some real improvements. I mean I know looks are important and all but how the truck looks and feels driving inside is more important to me than exterior appearance.

Agreed. Even if they go to something like a 3.23, should be able to get more grunt in 1st (and better fuel economy in overdrive).

I have seen that with just about every new vehicle coming out, specifically trucks. I was on the Tacoma forum for many years and when the different generations and facelifts came out every time there was moaning and complaining about how ugly it is, and then a few months later they start inquiring about retrofitting the new grill or lights or whatever on the previous gen because it is so bad-ass looking.
This Tundra will be no exception and soon most will like it.

I agree. His analysis in the video is flawed, using other Toyota hybrids to extrapolate an increase in mpg over the non-hybrid Tundra. It’s not the same hybrid system so there won’t be as much of a mpg increase. He also assumes the 23 mpg figure for the LC 300 is combined city/highway, which I think is incorrect.

Based on the LC 300 getting 23 mpg highway, and the Tundra non-hybrid having slightly less horsepower, then 24 mpg highway seems like a good estimate. Then the Tundra Hybrid could reasonably have 24 mpg combined.

What worries me is Sweers saying in interviews that the Hybrid is built for power and not going for economy. Sounds like he’s trying to lower expectations. Time will tell.

I don't think the new Raptor had any meaningful changes that would improve straight line acceleration, pretty sure all specs carried over

Correct. I believe the engine and transmission are the same. There is speculation of a boosted V8 in an upcoming Raptor-R variant.
