Yeah I understand how to calculate payload. That’s not my point. I was saying it’s ironic that when Ford and GM use the base model to get max payload, people write articles saying that they are overestimating and lying about it to chase numbers. When Toyota does the same thing, no one says anything.

 

I’m sure we can minus a couple hundred pounds off of that to get the door sticker number

 

Toyota absolutely does it also. Gives numbers for a model with zero options or packages. Go to a dealer and show me a Platinum that does not have a sunroof, or any SR5 package added. I bet you Toyota produces less than 5% of SR5's with no add on packages. Toyota does the exact same thing. In real world, I have yet to see a Toyota within 200 pounds of advertised payload.

Look at BigArt's post above yours and it says 1,800 pounds. I guaranteed a double cab SR5 4x4 will be in the 1,550 range if you are lucky.

 

The difference is, GM actually got caught fudging their payload #s by removing things you shouldn’t remove (the spare, etc). I’m not sure if Ford got caught as well, or if people just distrust their payload #s because they’ve been caught fudging in other areas. One of many class action lawsuits against Ford is for advertising unobtainable fuel economy numbers.

This is a lot different than saying “max available payload” referring to the barest bones work truck trim with no packages. It’s kind of obvious this refers to less equipped trucks, right? Buyers not thinking about how all the features on their Platinum trucks actually add mass to the truck or not checking the door trim does not amount to deception on Toyota’s part.

I don’t believe Toyota has given us a reason to distrust their numbers on anything. Toyota would rather tell you the exact truth, even if it puts them at the back of the pack.

Hmmmmm, I was hoping the ICE would always be running even at low take-off speeds. Not sure how I feel about that BUT I'm sure I can adapt to the hybrid models. Maybe you can disable. Everything will be electric "soon" so may as well get used to it early-ish. The wifes BMW is similar but I don't drive it.

The 2022 will have air ride suspension so it might not squat if you get that option.

I mean with all that back seat room it's an understandable mistake.

 

The latest video someone linked above mentioned which trim levels the air suspension is available on and the Pro isn't one of them. If I'm not mistaken it's only rear adjustable anyway. It's nothing like the Ram setup. As for coil vs leaf, nothing is free: coil will ride better but squat more when you load it up.

Toyota used the popular features on the other trucks like a build-your-own-pizza menu. I think they see an F150 with some Ram and GM thrown in. No, I don't think this was the reaction from Detroit.

Didn't Toyota describe this truck as a world beater? Not exactly sure how it fits that description.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned in the last 30-40 pages or so in all the back and fourth about it sucks or it's great, is power.
Turbo cars are notoriously easy to wring a bunch of extra HP out of with just bolt on mods. I'm just as unhappy about a lack of v8 option as anyone else, but what if with a few bolts ons, your 489 hp truck is now 520, or 530, with increased torque as well?

I mean, typically with a downpipe, exhaust, intake, ecu tune, etc you can easily make a bunch of hp on turbo vehicles, I'd suspect that this truck will be no different.
The ford guys are making 50+ hp over stock, no reason we couldn't as well.. and that's just as a start. Once you get into upgrading turbos, etc you can make some serious hp if you so desire. FI engines are typically pretty overbuilt, so they can take more boost pretty easily.

 

Always an option of course but...

 

Yeah, not sure what they were thinking by saying that. It's okay to build up excitement and expectations but you have to deliver if you're going to do that. Don't get me wrong, I like it and if my F150 order gets cancelled (very likely to happen) then I'm going to make a move on a 1794. However, they didn't even catch up, let alone beat any of the big three. The only reason I'm considering it at all is because like some others here, I'd like this to be the last pickup I have to buy.

 

Power is cool, but so is longevity and ease of maintenance.


Hopefully the new turbo V6 will prove reliable.

Your synopsis of turbos was interesting and hopefully the Toyota folks can make them reliable. I have had twin turbos on our BMWs one gas and one diesel. They do definitely increase the torque at the low end and make them more efficient. Both are over 5 years old and have been the most reliable cars we’ve owned. That being said we drive mostly easily, and no off reading. I also am a firm believer of changing the oil before it’s time. I expect the Tundra’s turbos to be reliable. There will be cases where people abuse and run the engines to the redlines, and that will lead to problems, but that is expected imo. I’m looking forward to seeing how this all plays out. With only 22K miles on my 18 Tundra, it may be awhile before I consider upgrading.

 

I asked my wife is she preferred 8" or 14".

No, mine are aluminum housing. Google indicates the Tacoma cleats (featured in the promotional videos of the Gen 3 Tundra) have a limit/capacity of 110lbs, the current Tundra cleats are 220lbs. Seems like you’d want the heavier duty cleats given the increased payload.

 

I think the current Tundra ones are aluminum, Tacoma are plastic.

 

OV tuning tackled the LS TTV6 a while back, they said it had very complicated tables.
