Hi guys so I’m sure this has been posted a million times but I couldn’t find anything that sounded like my truck. So I have a 2007 tundra with 130k miles and it has a noise from the passenger side when it’s cold. It stays a tick for about 30 seconds-a minute and then turns into more of a really quiet rattle almost. Drivers side is quiet and you can’t hear the noise if you listen from the top with the hood open. Here’s a video of what it sounds like right after I start it. I’m thinking maybe an exhaust leak? I don’t think it’s a valve problem since it goes away after it warms up. I’m running 0-20. https://www.dropbox.com/s/xtc5ii723tr11s1/IMG_1491.MOV?dl=0

My bet is on the timing chain tensioners, mine made a similar noise until I had them changed out.

Man looks like a fun job. Do you think I should do it soon? Noise doesn’t bother me a whole lot but I don’t want to neglect it and have the motor jump timing or anything haha

My 2008 was starting to make those noises, and I considered tensioners and guides but tried this instead:
    https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/AICLM20002?impressionRank=1

After 150 miles of driving with this additive, everything has been quiet. On the downside, I suspect I'll need to put it in about every third or fourth oil change.

It’s an expensive job for sure, I ran a long time with it until I figured out what it was. But timing isn’t something I want to gamble with so I had mine fixed by Toyota

How much was it if you don’t mind me asking? I’m pretty good at turning a wrench. I just haven’t had the truck for that long so I wasn’t looking forward to a major repair already. Here’s a pic of my 1uz swapped 1st gen 4Runner that I bought the tundra to pull. Motor hasn’t fallen out yet so I’m doing something right

I'd try the Ceratec before you tear the engine down.

I’ll give it a shot next oil change. I’m not planning on doing it for a little while. Did you use the whole bottle?

In 2018 along with changing the fluid in both diffs, transfer case, tranny, and an alignment it was about $3700. So I’d say it was probably a little over $3000, lots of man hours involved to get to the chains.

Wow that’s a lot. I’ll give it a shot in a month or two. Depending on if it gets worse and I’ll definitely update. I appreciate the help. If the ceratec fixes it I’ll probably leave it like that.

Yes, I dumped a whole bottle in when I changed my oil. I noticed absolutely no difference when first starting up the engine, but I let it run for about twenty minutes and it got considerably quieter, and eventually all the noise went away.

On the downside, my stock muffler is starting to fail and now I can hear some of those pin hole leaks rather clearly...

    Does it increases with RPM?
If you slam the front passenger door do you hear a rattle?

1.) I would start with checking exhaust shields on the passenger side making sure none of the are loose.
2.) I would check around and under the passenger side for any thing that rattles.
3.) (if equipped remove skid) and listen to alternator check to see if its coming from it "a bad alternator can also make this noise".
4.) if nothing has jumped out as 100% the noise source get a large flat head screw driver an cup the handle and stick the other end against a area with noise an put ear up to screw driver so you locate the noise. (Obviously don't put the screw driving in something thats rotating) ("how to listen with a screw driver" probably can be found on YT , if the search needs to be refined try "how to find a bad valve with screw driver" the principle is the same)

5.)(side note) if it is found to be the chain tensioner area from the verification with sound hunting go a head and use the additive an see if it helps.

happy hunting leme know what ya find. :)

Thanks for the suggestions I’ll check the shields. I’m pretty sure I tried to wiggle them and didn’t see anything but I’ll double check. I actually recently replaced the alternator because my battery light started flashing(the noise was already there). I’ll give everything a once over and try the screwdriver thing tonight also.

I wouldn’t worry about it. Much quieter than mine!

@Billy Bob Tundra the 5.7 and 4.6 in the 2nd gens have timing chains. You’ll be in 2000.00 plus range to change them.

@audiowize do you hear any of the same sound from my engine here: https://youtu.be/_eM65I2KThk?t=35

I've got the 4.7 so a timing belt, which may or may not be expired (going to change it anyway soon). I hear this sound coming from the top of the engine, it's pretty consistent which would seem to be a timing chain tensioner or maybe a pump going bad, but I hear it at the top of the engine. I don't hear it from in the cab.

@ZackT28 i believe that noise may be an exhaust leak where the saip pipe enters the driver side manifold. I was able to confirm that on mine yesterday and I recently tore down my camshaft risers to reseal them and installed timing chain tensioners - those make a different noise than what I hear in your video. Move some air up your exhaust with shop vac and listen for leaks.

I joined to see what is possible
idle belt tensioner. cheap part and easy to replace, id give that a shot first. I had a ticking noise and I replaced mine and it went away. also once the allen bolt was removed the entire assembly came apart (its not supposed to)...i think the part fails with age or miles. i have a 2007 and had only 48k miles at the time around 2019 or 2020 the part still came undone. no more ticking after replacing.

Not sure if you figured your noise out by now. To me it sounds like an exhaust leak, when the exhaust manifold warms up 30 seconds to a minute, it expands and seals off the leak, thats why it goes away. When they become worse they don't go away, maybe just a little quieter. Get yourself a cheap harbor freight stethoscope, the kind that has a tube or hose, you can even just use a vacuum hose in one ear if your hearing is good but don't use a stethoscope with the metal probe on it or the long screwdriver trick, it wont work, your listening for air pulses not a mechanical noise. You may have to put a piece of cardboard in front of that side of the engine to block the fan wind, kinda like when your on your cellphone and the other person is outside on a windy day, you cant hear them.
