If reliability remains, it’s great, but I’ve seen too many gasoline turbos (especially DI) have issues. Maybe Toyota will be different. Personally, I would’ve loved to see an evolution of the 1UR or 2UR as an option. Small changes to either mated to that new 10 speed would’ve put it over 20 MPG highway.

I would rather see the same v8 with the updated transmission and a real Trans cooler. That would have me upgrading to a 2022 maybe. If it wasn’t so freaking ugly anyway

The new turbos will be fun to drive. Therefore most owners will never realize a significant fuel economy improvement. Towing will be the same story. Reliability becomes the question and the bar is set high. It is disappointing to see an end to the V8. Turbos are nothing new so its up to Toyota to prove they should have put the TT V-6 in the 2007 model. I hope they do just that. In the meantime I'll run the wheels off my current ride.

How long has this engine been in service on the Lexus?

Wonder if it will have the same longevity as the V8.

Not with the original turbos. There is zero chance they last 1 million miles.

Don't forget that this is Toyota we are talking about... these guys are purposely late to the game on everything because they make sure they get it right before they release something.

Plus, I don't think Toyota is actually making the turbo, I believe it is made by a 3rd party.

Agreed. Where the 3UR-FE engine is engineered for over 400k miles.

Are you trying to tell me that this engine is different then every other turbo engine made before it? That's crazy talk.

I'm gonna go ahead and trust the word of an engineer who has actually worked with Toyota over some random person on an internet forum... but thanks for your input.

He must have asked before they switched to the plastic oil pans in 2018.

I don't deny most of what you are saying (more moving parts, more stress, etc). What I disagree with is that there is "zero chance" that Toyota can make it as reliable as the V8.

I guess it depends on what your definition of reliability is. At work we look at unplanned downtime, not the amount of preventative maintenance required. If doing the required PM on a FI engine allows it to have the same availability as a NA engine, is it really less reliable?

If the maintenance is substantially greater than the naturally aspirated V8, any mpg savings are negated by the cost of maintenence. That's not even mentioning the premium fuel requirement.
