The video I saw showed it deployed like amp steps when you opened the tailgate.

    Have you taken a ride in a 2019 Ram 1500 or 2500?

Yeah it functioned just like the platinum steps. It's motorized up and down based on tailgate. Pretty cool option honestly. Idk if anyone has messed with GM's tail gate but although cool and useful, it's kind of a PITA to operate. The ford is easy but requires additional manual labor as well. You could call the Tundra fully automated if you used the fob to open the tail gate.

... as long as you can climb up on the left side of the bed at the time. If that's blocked and you have to climb up on the right you're back where you started. Completely agree with you on integrated bed steps for both sides, very useful.

Did you get to the point in the video where they talked about accessories? The step was one, TRD specific running boards was another, swing out tool boxes were the third, what was the fourth?

Agreed, my dad has the new multifunction tailgate on his GMC, first of all you can't use it with your trailer hitch in, second it's a multi step procedure in order to step into the bed, third it seems like they engineered a solution to a problem that really didn't exist. You can say it's useful for all the different reasons they like to advertise, but in all honesty, I've never felt like I needed a solution to any of those. I also like the KISS method. Keep it simple stupid. No reason to overly complicate something.

lol... so what would have made you happy? Integrated steps in the bumper like the competitors? If they had done that then someone would complain that they were just copying someone else and not being innovative... lol... You can't please everyone

Exactly, that’s all Toyota could come up with after 14 years? No leading, just following. :der:

ya me too, I need to carry some basic things for work.

especially if I do wonder pop with a hybrid and have no undersea storage, still not sure on that one though until the test drives. Something tells me I won't want to pay the extra and the extra complexity when the normal motor has plently of power at 389/479

I thought that GMC tailgate was genius but I never take the hitch out and would dent the tailgate on day one or shortly thereafter. It's always two steps forward and one back and engineers (especially Toyota engineers) are loathe to ever admit a mistake.

Kia has some 'leading' car designs lately. With that said, if I had a choice between that and a Camry and one had to last me 400K miles I know exactly which one I'd go with. Same thing with trucks. My F150 was more capable than my Tundra is on paper...but after multiple issues with it, I have no problem 'following' Ford. (I can see them break down easier that way. LOL)

Toyota is the Apple of auto manufacturers. They have no interest in being on the bleeding edge of anything. That's not how they made their reputation into what it is today.

Motorized step is perfect to me, out of the way when not needed, automatically deployed when you do, not overly complicated, but serves it's purpose.

I guess you can get into one side of the bed with the new highly engineered motorized step.
GM products at least have the functionality of the step bumper if you are using the hitch.

there are companies out there that make specific hitch setups for the multi-pro tailgate. B&W hitch is one, so solution to the problem but does suck you have to buy a special draw bar.

Toyota is not in the game to be cutting edge, they will take tech from other manufacturers and perfect it so that it lasts for 20 years and 200,000+ miles. If you want cutting edge go buy a Ford and be prepared to take it to the shop a couple times a year to work the clitches out.

My point is the Ram 1500/2500 rides very nice.

What design would you use if it was up to you that hasn't been designed already? Are you saying you would try to reinvent the wheel or just improve on it? Not being a smart ass, I want your honest opinion and design ideas.

Integrated bed step would have been great and wouldn't need to worry about failure like you will with that motorized step. How well will that step work after a guy has been driving through slush in the winter and then you have freezing temps, mud dirt and debris getting in it, i see downsides to it.
