1500 (1/2 ton) pickups are used for work every day day in and day out......Probably more 1/2 tons are used to work than 3/4 or 1/tons. 1/2 tons hit that perfect mark between light duty work during the week, comfy family vehicle and weekend toy hauler. But for some reason, the toyota marketing team wanted to make a point that they didn't design this truck to do any work...lol

General availability for Non-Pro's is December 2021. No Pro's until March 2022. What's not clear yet is whether any of the IForce Max Hybrid power trains will be available this calendar year AFAIK.

I guess I could have been more clear. 80k is what I'd be fine with after the purchase of the vehicle, the lift, new wheels and tires & whatever other mods I want to do to the truck, like ceramic coating, tonneau cover, etc. And I have to pay 8.5% sales tax. It all adds up and I think 80k is a reasonable expectation. Since it's going to be my last vehicle I want it the way I want it.

At full power or do you think the battery will weaken over time?

Also, does anyone know if these are Panasonic batteries? Maybe someone already mentioned this… sorry I can’t keep up with the thread.

[QUOTE="Correct me if I’m wrong but I thought the Pros was going to be available this year. Is that still the case? I’m looking at a TRD Pro in Grey or Lunar Rock, I’m hoping I can get it this year as I have 300k on my 1st Gen and I have plans for some long trips with the family this winter.[/QUOTE]

It's not entirely clear to me but my understanding is the lower trims will be available in December but the higher trims, including the TRD Pro, won't be available until March 2022. I'm not sure what the factors are in that - perhaps the TTv6 hybrid version? That actually works for me as I'm in my current vehicles until March.

Aren't these liquid cooled turbos like in the Ecoboost?

The turbochargers will most likely last the life of the vehicle, turbos aren't wear items. They've been in use for about 100 years and engineers know how to design them to last. The pearl clutching here about turbochargers on this engine is amusing to watch I'll admit.

I hope the fear of them turns off enough buyers to keep the prices down though!

I haven’t look but the only info I have seen is that it’s a NI-MH battery. Why old tech in a total redesign? Toyota hasn’t released any MPG info, Price info, Battery specs. You would figure if all this was so grate they would have. At least that’s the way I see it.

So what your saying is that the bearings never ever wear out. If a turbo isn’t a wear item then neither is an engine. They will last millions of years. Lol

I know Panasonic had a hand in the Tesla batteries and is a partner with Toyota for batteries. Solid state, whatever that is. I just don’t know if that is where these came from. If so I’m optimistic…

Was it just me or did Mike Sweers come off as arrogant? He tried to hide it, but I got a strong vibe from him.

First thought I had listening to him talk was that I'd never want to work for him.

He seemed to know best which would explain a lot.. Those types live in bubbles of their own reality. Its why he has no clue his creation is ugly or boring, or middle of the road. Nobody can counter a know it all boss. They fire you and get a "yes" man or woman to replace you.

Maybe a stretch on my part, but it would explain a lot.

Normally I like his chanel, but he is off on a few things....that is for sure. (SR5 does come in color matched bumpers)

    https://www.caranddriver.com/news/g37634082/2022-toyota-tundra-trims-options/

I have been a little disappointed with a few things you mentioned:

-Tow hooks. Not sure what brought that on to take off the 2022 model. I can see some serious damage happening to Toyota 3rd gens even from tow trucks winching on a flatbed. Lord forbid if you or someone else gets stuck. TRD Pro is supposed to be designed for off-road...pppfffftttt.
I shouldn't have to spend 1000.00+ dollars on an aftermarket front bumper for something that should be on a truck.

-Rear bumper. So there are some pro's to this new bumper design for sure. A high clearance rear bumper will be an easy fit without cutting body panels. This is a good thing for the off-roading crowd. The added LS/Locker will be a huge bonus for them. I use my rear locker in the GMC all the time (it's automatic up to 20 mph)

No insert for a step up into the bed. This is where GM has rocked it. For most on here, this is a non issue. For this guy, it is a big deal. Not sure if most of you ever towed with a GN trailer. The step in the bumper makes it safe and easy to get into the bed.

Ford has the step that comes out of the center of the tailgate. I really like that system if empty. Kind of a PITA to do every time when I can just use the grab handle in the bed and put a boot in the bumper. Now were Ford really messed up on this design is with 5ver and gooseneck hitches. How the hell do you get into the bed easily with the tailgate down and the step in the center? Quick answer...you don't.

This angle shows how "fun" it would be to get into the bed to connect/disconnect the trailer. Could you imagine without the step in the corners of the bumper?

    IMG_5244.jpg IMG_5242.jpg

I can also just put the truck/trailer into a slight offset and have even more room. You can see the drivers side would be impossible to get into. The passenger side is so easy.

    IMG_5243.jpg

-Composite bed....ehhh. I could go either way. I had one in our Tacoma. It was lighter for sure and slick as hell. Bed mat is a necessity IMO. Being on TacomaWorld, I have also seen my fair share of cracked composite beds from something sliding forward. Tying/strapping everything down will be very important.
The rust issue is a good point. Forgot about that. Most Toyota owners keep their vehicles a lot longer. The people that buy new vehicles every 3-5 years will not be affected by this unless they live in the rust belt.

There is a TFL video as well as the podcast, It was kind of funny, in the introduction they were like, "you have been lead truck designer for how many years" he was like. "10". First thing that came to my mind was...great...this is his first truck design and hasn't had much practice....lol. ( I know they have done the Tacoma..)

Toyota knows their market, they will never be a fleet truck like the F150. The Tundra is a lifestyle truck and that is exactly what the previous poster described.

The turbo does not have a wear bearing, it spins in the fluid film, producing no mechanical wear. The bearing may still fail when the shaft cuts through the oil film, for one or another reason, but technically speaking, it can spin virtually forever while there's oil pressure in the bearing lobes. That does not mean a turbo engine would allow it to spin forever ;)

Why do you say that? Turbos can be very reliable and last a long time. There are several that have gone 200,000 plus without any issues with their turbos.

We'll hit 15,000 comments on this thread of people complaining about his work by lunch today. I'd be a little irritated too. I understand now why they only do this once every 15 years.

Just kidding. No, he didn't actually strike me as arrogant. He was exactly what I think a midwestern toyota engineer would be. Practical, level headed, and doesn't like being in front of a camera.

The post I commented on said you'd have to rebuild them at 100k. I was saying I doubted they would only make it to 100k. I agree with you that they should last much longer.

I totally agree with you on the tow hooks and asked about that many pages ago, it's frankly stupid on Toyotas part to forget them.

As for towing a gn or 5th wheel, you are on the wrong forum and should be looking for a HD truck.

Yeah maybe so. I hate this truck so much, mainly because I expected apparently an unrealistic outcome. Probably clouding my judgment when it comes to anything associated with it.

Not all working 1/2 tons are fleet trucks, and I know what they are trying to convey, its just funny that they made it a point to say that this truck wasn't built for work.

I probably would not have given that ammunition to my competitors...lol. I mean If I were selling Fords and a guy was in between the Ford and the Tundra, I would keep a copy of that handy......"Why would you wanna buy that Tundra, they didn't build it to work at all...the engineer says it right here in print" (as I pulled out the article on the phone)...

Honestly what they described that their customer is and what they designed the truck for, they already have the truck for that....and I guess if you go by the sales figures between them, they are right.

I honestly think it’s a good looking truck. But I’m old school in thinking full sized trucks should have V8’s, so put me in the camp of those disappointed about that not being an option. I’m hoping they’ll bring it back at some point.

Even just getting into the bed it is a completely different experience. As one gets older, your sure footing isn't what it once was. Not sure if you ever have slipped off the rear bumper (and I hope you never do), but that sucks and injury can happen very quickly.

I do agree about the GN/5ver comment. However...it sure does seem to come up more than I like.

I actually really like the 1794. They did a great job on it, and it has a rural feel without being totally over the top.

Don’t forget when the dealer really pushes the extended warranty on this new truck and starting telling you how things will cost if you plan on keeping it past the factory warranty.
