Hey guys, member since 2017 here. Just traded my tried and true 2007 CrewMax in on a 2021 CrewMax. Loving the truck and what a jump in the technology Dept! Anyways when I hit the MAP button it says “app not installed”. So, I have no navigation in the truck? How is it supposed to work? I heard mention of some phone app? I thought the truck would come with its own navigation program? What am I missing here? TIA!

Nice truck and congrats! Unfortunately it’s not standard on SR5 TSS off road trims. I use apple CarPlay anyway so it doesn’t bother me!

Ok so can you explain apple car play? Is that the app that I heard about for the phone? Thanks for the response!

If you have an iPhone and connect it to the USB port under the climate controls it should recognize it and say CarPlay in one of the boxes in the Home Screen (bottom left on mine). Then you touch that box and the CarPlay screen will come up and you can use your phone to listen to music, navigate, or whatever.

Apple CarPlay (if you have an iPhone) or android auto (for android phones) is super easy. Just plug in your lightning cable (cable you use to plug your phone into) into a USB port. It should automatically connect for you to pull up maps or music/etc.

Also, it will use whatever navigation app you are using on your phone. It defaults to apple maps, but I usually use Waze. Not sure if google maps will come up, too.

And by the way, you really aren't missing much by not having the OEM Toyota Navigation. Although it has improved, it really isn't that good. I tested and compared it to Waze and Google Maps on a trip from Kansas to the west coast and back last summer. The phone apps chose far more efficient routes. I personally prefer Waze now.

Yes, agreed! I’ve used my phone all these years as it was. Now it’s blown up on my dash screen to use. I’m loving it.

One other thing is that integrated nav is also typically more expensive and complicated with regards to maintaining up to date maps.

Little hint if you haven't found it already but once you plug in your phone to the usb if you hit the maps button on your stereo it will automatically pull up your default map on your phone. Enjoy!!

Only downfall in using your phone map is when you go to certain areas with no phone reception. Happen to me near a state park in middle of Texas. I have to use my car stereo navigation to guide me.

In google maps you can download offline maps for any area so that your maps will work without a signal.

Wife says the same thing; she got a 2020 Highlander with built-in navigation but after trying to use it she said "Meh, I'll just use Apple Maps." LOL
