They are going to publish numbers around 25mpg and real world, it's going to be around 20 to 22

Regardless, I'll still be getting TRD Pro in a few years.

 

What are you basing that on? Have you seen the low rpm torque numbers they are reporting? That thing should tow the heck out of anything you throw at it.

 

This may be why they mounted the batter under the rear seat - replaceability will be easy and cheaper.

 

I think they still have some old 1st gen Prius battery laying around, and use it in tundra

 

It's a button under the ac console on the dash. It's in a lot of pics on car and driver.

 

I thought the 1794 and platinum were the same exact price now and were the two top trims, maybe that changed since 2016 when I bought mine

 

I believe the Gen 3 Tundra is targeted at current Tacoma/4Runner owners that may want to go bigger but did not want to jump to the "aged" Gen 2 Tundra platform due to old tech, v8 and 6 speed all the trade publications and online videos harped on as being obsolete. The Gen 3 Tundra does address concerns of the smaller platform Toyota enthusiasts with the TTv6 and Hybrid offerings which will make around town and soccer mom usage more fuel efficient and the latest in big screen tech.

I don't think it addresses anything that a current Ford/Chevy/Ram owner looks for as a must have. They already have all the new tundra features available in a domestic platform. As a side note, the Ford/Chevy/Ram owners I know would never buy a Toyota or Nissan. Just how it is with them.

I believe the Gen 3 Tundra will effectively convert some of the Tacoma/4Runner owners to the full size Toyota platform. Existing Tundra market share is around 5% and has been single digits for the life of the truck so any gain is a positive. IMO Toyota shifted away from converting 1/2 ton Ford/Chevy/Ram owners and is now focused on up-sizing mid-size truck/suv owners. It may work, time will tell.

As for myself, I am not interested in a full size pickup with a v6. I did not buy a full size truck because of good gas mileage, MPG is very low on my must-have list. I'm not interested in the new tech since when I drive I'll either listen to an audio book or iHeartRadio and my Samsung S21 pairs fine with the truck via Toyota Entune app or Bluetooth. For mapping I use google maps from my phone with audible prompts. My phone is my "advanced" tech and I do replace it every few years and that way I have the best tech available. Let the in-dash display/play the media from my upgradable tech in my phone. I have a bass boat and prefer tech not mounted to the boat that soon falls behind cutting edge.

*Before anyone starts busting chops that I'm afraid of tech...I work in tech day in day out, I see pizza box servers become obsolete that I just deployed a few years ago. The cloud is evolving, it is getting smarter, it is getting faster and more agile and could not do so without cutting edge tech. None of this would be possible if the tech was a fixed piece of the facility infrastructure. Maybe someday manufacturers will find common communication protocols with their peripheral electronics so the in vehicle tech can be upgraded over time. The PC industry standardized their cards and input/output devices and those that kept theirs proprietary are no longer in the PC business. So don't bust my chops, I know more than I'm allowed to discuss about high tech stuff. Been on the cutting edge for 30+ years.

 

My company makes testing equipment. One has a lithium battery that runs the entire function, the other has a small NiMH battery that runs cpu functions but major functions are run off site power. Completely different setups and requirements for the batteries but still a granny smith to fuji comparison vs apples to oranges.
I was in upstate new york 2 years ago in December and the highest temp I saw was 17 all week.
The piece of equipment with the NiMH battery would not turn on in the field. It was hooked to site power for nearly an hour with the internal charger on before I gave up. It wouldn't turn on until it'd been in my hotel room for 4 hours.
The lithium battery equipment ran just fine, although with lower capacity.
I know there's alot of different designs and heaters, etc etc for batteries nowadays, so take it with a grain of salt, but my experience is cold weather doesn't mix with NiMH batteries

 

It's a standard for cars to pop a ped onto the hood, and the hood needs to be a certain "softness".

With the trucks it's just dick swinging.

 

Might be ordering two new ones instead of getting a Tacoma. Who knows how hard they will be to get. Lol probably better fuel economy than a Tacoma too!

 

The early Prius' used the NiMH batteries and I believe those are still working. I remember reading somewhere that because of Toyota's battery management system they don't allow the battery to ever drop below a certain % or go above a certain % charge. This extends the life expectancy of the batteries.

 

NiMH is cheaper but still has respectable reliability and longevity with how Toyota manages the charge. I suppose Toyota is damned if they do and damned if they don't. If they put in Lithium the $ goes up and people bitch about the price; they put in NiMH with a lower price point and people bitch about performance.

yep and plus we haven't heard what the warranty will be yet. If they put a decent warranty on the batteries then I'm fine with it.

You don't think there will be a flex issue like the Tacomas, I guess you can always use bed stiffeners to hold it together like you have to do in the Tacoma

 

The elbow open is super slick though.

 

They added a power corner step as an option ofc

 

Is a drop down step now standard? It's kinda a PITA to get into the bed of a TRD Pro. Without that corner, that sucks.

 

I guess that depends on the weight of the truck camper...not all of them are 4K lbs

Yeah, I'm not a fan of that molded-in bumper look. It makes it look like a crossover that they put a bed on (like the Ridgeline)

We don't know the price yet so complaining about what the truck should have because of the price point when the price hasn't been announced is kind of moot. If the hybrid comes in around 70k then OK, you can complain.

 

agreed, its not going to be 15K more than a current tundra MSRP.

 

Honestly, this is all just my opinion - but this isn't a huge upgrade that puts it over other manufacturers. This really just feels like them catching up with technology. I'm pretty disappointed they couldn't even put an outlet in the bed like Tacoma has had for years. Looks like a nice truck, not bashing it in general - I just think they're hype didn't meet the reveal.
