1st Gen. Lunch Table - General Discussion

To reiterate what @KarmaKannon and @FirstGenVol have already said, as someone who's done several GenIII drivetrain swaps into misc vehicles over the year, I would just reiterate these points:

In the hot rod days, the SBC (small block chevy, Gen2 and earlier) was one of the most-sought-after engines imaginable because the gd thing was bulletproof af, and was super cheap and easy to upgrade.

So, naturally, when the GenIII engine that truck has came on the scene, all fuel injected and beefy, where you can dump a couple hundred on simple upgrades and net 50-100 HP easy, people went f'n crazy over it.

While I'm sure there's probably a 4l60e or 4l80e bolted up to that truck, I can tell you w100% confidence, even in your neck of the woods, there are people who'd easily pay $750-1500 for that drivetrain combo if it's got under 150k miles on it just because of the possibilities and reputation the GenIII drivetrain has.

Mind you. This is coming from someone who does stupid shit like this, so I'm really f'n biased, but I assure you, there's plenty of ME out there, so ..

You may want to sell the drivetrain. OR if nothing else, yank it, bag it, and store it somewhere. To date, I've directly helped swap GenIII engines into a couple of Porsches (928, 944), a Fiero (!!!), a Nova, two Chevelles, a '68 Camaro and a Miata to date. That drivetrain is gold if it truly runs like a top.

I'd easily give you $500 all for the engine/tranny combo and ECU all day if it's as good as you say. Although I'd need to find a project to stick it in. Actually, we talked about Suzuki Samurais recently ... that could be a fun project .....

AFTER that, yes, you should be able to get 250-350 taking it to a scrap yard to be melted down. So you've got at least $1k in vehicle there.

EXACTLY!! Although I wouldn't do this. Not to a Gen1. Only to a vehicle that looked more awesome than the engine was. These trucks had a really bulletproof drivetrain, seems almost a little sacrilegious to stuff a GenIII into it.

I've said this a few times on the forum, but I come from a pure GM family. Like, through and through. I'm pissed GM had so many damn issues with interior plastics cracking all to hell, exterior-to-interior water leaks, crazy rust at window corners and other stupid crap like that. Once '73 hit, everything went to hell for them.

 

Lot to consider here... I think the truck has about 280K on it, but still I'd keep all the engine stuffs or like to.

Not real sure what I'd need, or how much space I'd require. I know that I could put my foot into it, and that truck would fuckin skooooooooooooooot! It does need a little bit of work which I'm happy to do.

 

Dislike. You were on the right path. They are sucking you down the rabbit hole to the wrong path. Look around. Sell it, scrap it. That's not your project.

 

I've considered gm V8 swap into my tundra. It's just too easy to get 350hp compared to the factory 275 on my 06 4.7. I was thinking my xj needed one, but I'm not even sure I'll keep it. I never know what I'm going to keep and what I'm going to sell anymore. I do know an LS in my tundra would eliminate most of my gripes with it and that's power.

 

I agree. I was just saying I suspect he could get a lot more by selling it than scrapping it.

 

The 3rd Gen Tundra has finally been revealed. RIP to the V8. The hybrid will have 583 lb ft of torque though. I bet it will haul ass. I want to see one in person with bigger tires.

Having more projects than time/ money not only makes you more interesting at parties (that you'll never attend because... Projects!), But makes you a more well rounded procrastinator (just thinking up excuses not to work on those projects is hard work).

 

Just makes ours that much more valuable. I'm not complaining.

If mine was a 2WD, I'd be tempted to go through with it. I've never done a GenIII 4WD retrofit.

But generally speaking, my Gen1 Tundra is the 1st truck out of many where I've said to myself "shit ... they nailed this out of the park on all fronts" and the only things missing were small tech upgrades or aftermarket add-ons. The Gen1 is still viable, 20 years later, with so few things lacking. It doesn't hurt that the drivetrain is a 500k+ beast. I don't know many people who wouldn't trade longevity for a little performance also. So good on so many fronts.

It's why the Tundra is moving on Tomorrow. It's a great opportunity for someone, but it took me 3 years & $thousands$ to figure out I'm not that someone.

Dang. Love that truck, but next time round I'll buy a really nice & completely done salt free example.

Northern tools has what appears to be the same cart, but black, and allegedly made in USA. I may go freight though because northern tool wants $23 to ship it.

At least no bed rust. That middle console is HUGE. You could stuff a small pet in there.

 

Not sure if looks like my kind of styling. I used to like those tfl guys until they took one our products from work to test and did a tiny review where they compared it to something that cost 1/10th as much. I mean it was like comparing a 35" bfg to a bicycle tire. They both roll, but have different uses. And they even screwed up the specs saying it didn't come with a very popular option. It just hadn't been installed on that model because it was brand new.

 

Yeah that really annoys me. Hell, this is the first time they are putting all terrains on them. Before this it was just a shitty all season.

They really don't do as great of job on the TRD Pro as they could. They still don't compete with the Raptor IMO. I know the Raptor gets a ton of hate but it looks badass!

 

You'd think the new Sequoia would look similar but it actually looks better for the front end than the new Tundra.

I'll agree that the Raptor definitely looks a lot better.

i mean if i were towing constantly, I would consider it over any other option.. its just ugly. I DO trust the toyota hybrids.. theyre rock solid in all the shit they stuff them in. this ones an interesting take on it.. first one they've used a regular trans with and the motors really just a booster for power

 

So.. Toyota admitted in the new tundra overview, the new tundra IS the 3rd gen. not 4th gen

 

so the 2.5 is a real thing afterall......

 

There is a 2019 blacked out QS CrewMax SR5 Tundra on the used dealership lot which I drove past 4 times yesterday. Every time I couldn’t help but look. Totally nailed it on styling and $44k is close to reasonable almost. If it were 4wd, I might actually go check it out but I don’t think I could bring myself to sell either of the ones I have.



By the numbers, the 2022 sounds quite interesting. Styling sometimes settles in with time. I’ll see how it grows on me. Loved the hybrid drivetrain in my Prius. For sure I’d buy another Toyota hybrid in the future.

 

Yeah, being at a convenience store AND new kinda jacked the price up. That was after tax. After it goes down some I'll get more.
