Radiator hose rubbing on Pulley

Hi all, had a radiator hose leak last weekend. Luckily saw the puddle on my friends driveway. Tried to tape it up so I could drive home but it still leaked so I left it there till I could replace the hose.

what’s strange is the hose was carved into right infront of a pulley. I don’t know what caused it… did the hose vibrate and contact the pulley or maybe the belt slid off and carved into the hose?… only 2 scenarios I can think of.

Wondering if anyone has had this issue and if there’s a way to make sure it doesn’t happen again?

I didn’t take a pic of the damaged hose but it was carved into right at the bottom of the pulley here:

 

Aftermarket hoses? I’ve had terrible fitment issues with nOn OEM hoses unless you trim them.

 

That was my first thought as well. It was a hose I had my mechanic change a couple years ago and the first thing I did was look for markings. None whatsoever. Got the new hose from Toyota and it has markings along the side. Hopefully it was just a cheap hose. Luckily this didn’t happen the weekend prior when I was 300miles away from home.

 

Either cheap aftermarket of an oem installed backwards. Only way that kinda thing happens

 

Fairly certain it wasn’t upside down so hoping it was just an aftermarket hose.

Be sure to check that the pulley is spinning true and straight, no wobble. It may be more than just poor hose fitment.

Surprised me to find out radiator hose was installed upside down, after flipping it there was plenty of clearance. Just to make sure it couldn’t rub I drilled a small hole in the fan shroud and put a nylon zip tie around the hose and through hole. This trick will give you peace of mind.
