Well, I knew I'd wake up to something like this one day...

 

I was flashlight kid. Typical stereotype you see minus the beer, but with an extra smoke at the time. That got me interested to start taking things apart (with a hammer.) I got my ass whipped many a time for busting stuff up that I thought was just junk.

Eventually I figured out how to use proper tools, and how to put things back together. When I got my first "smart" phone in 2013 I discovered youtube. That changed the whole game for me.

Pops just does it himself when he feels like it. Lackadaisical kinda sorta from the outside looking in. I've heard for most of my life: "I'll do this, and I'll do that." It rarely happens so I give him some time to make progress, and I usually take over to help. I wind up doing it all.

Taking a step back, and looking at the whole situation Pops/Noah situation. Truth be told, I think Pop's health is far worse than he'd ever tell anyone. We both work 10.5 hour shifts on concrete with a 2 hour round trip commute. He's pretty well roasted by the time he gets home.

Thinking back to just 10 years ago, he wasnt even nearly this bad. The slow decay suddenly quickened. Part of growing up I 'spose. I routinely feel like I'm in the passengers seat of a car holding the wheel for someone that's incapacitated. Not a whole lot that I can do, but I can do some. So as much as it bothers me, I do still try to help.

So I stumbled across an 06 double cab 4x4 300k on the clock. Said that paints pretty good has one bad spot on the passengers side fender. Askin $5500 on it. I’m considering buying it if the truck checks out. Dudes sending pictures of it later this evening

So my brand new OEM fan shroud and lower fan shroud showed up today. It's missing the two metal clips that hold the lower shroud tight against the main shroud.

My main reason for ordering new was the shroud that came with the truck was busted the hell up, and it was missing those clips. I thought for sure buying new would come with clips.

Any suggestions on where to get clips?

the best way to get a screw to eat into sheet metal is a cross punch done with a pointy phillips head. And a hammer.

plastic needs a fair sized pilot hole. Like less than an 1/8th from total.

 

I don't reckon it'd have the same kind of spring to it. Thought about doing a through bolt but clearance issues, drilling into a brand new part, etc...

Ah! He's the dude with the classic steel on his property that, when you approach and offer $$ for it, "Oh, I'm gonna restore that thing one day" and you watch it, year after year, as it decays to the point of no return? My maternal grandfather outside SATX was that guy, I've plenty in my life.

You know, aside from that, I know it's cliche to be, like, "yup, old age kicking my ass!" but it definitely starts, seems like right around the end of your 30s, and it happens just subtle enough you may not notice, until it's just enough that you do, and by then it's too late.

I thought I did good when I made it to 43 and still had my reading vision intact. Then suddenly, out of absolutely nowhere, in the course of 8-10 days, I went from waking up in the AM, reading my phone at 1ft away, to 3 ft away, then "what the fuck? when did my arm get so short?"

And suddenly, you start remembering stupid injuries you got as a kid. Because they start hurting. But you learn to live with it. Still sucks.

Now they want you to start colonoscopies at 45 instead of 50. And all kinds of other stupid shit. Enjoy your youth, and learn from what your Pops is living.

Haven't had to download video off it yet, and I haven't RTFM either to know what to do if I get in a wreck, it's supposed to auto-record. Also haven't hardwired it, though I've got the kit. But it's quiet, small, I don't see it behind my rearview mirror. But I can see its light and know it's recording.

I recommend buying from Summit Racing. No worries about counterfeits, price is good, and shipping is cheap.

FYI @jImmegart quick edit: You'll also need to get an SD card to record stuff. If you search A-Zon for this phrase B07NY23WBG you'll see the one I chose and it's working well.

 

Does the garmin constantly record and it just records over its self?

 

That's my understanding, but if I read correctly, if it detects an accident event, it marks that event as read-only. Using the side of SD card I did, should take quite a while to get to a point of loop forward.

 

I like our Viofo and it has great reviews. The important thing is to get a quality SD card.

It looks like they have lowered the price and come out with a newer model.

Back when I first started looking, that viofo was the one to get but they seem kinda bulky.

there aren’t many engine and drive trane pics, all the interior looks manageable.
If the bottom side looks ok and timing belt history, I’d say yes!

 

Most dash cams these days seem to be around the same size. Once it's mounted on the windshield you likely won't notice it. Typically the rear view mirror blocks most of it from my view.

 

That sounds like the dead Prius in my garage.

 

That's ultimately why I went with the Garmin Mini. I don't want an LCD screen, I have a mobile device that works fine for that.

The big thing though, really, for me and many others I've seen post on Reddit and other places, is just buying something. It's too easy to go down the spiral of "oh damn, what to buy" or "Analysis Paralysis".

I let it get to me for a long time. Do I get the Viofo? Do I get any of the 20 others that look almost exactly like it on A-Zon and are made at the same factory in Guangdon or Shenzen anyway, many with horrible QC? Do I get a forward only, forward and backward, something that will integrate with my head unit?

Then I decided, I trust Garmin. They make killer stuff. They back up their stuff. They have support. They have a small unit and its price is right. The big thing isn't features, like I thought. It's that it records and is reliable.

That last bit is what got me off my ass and led me to buy. I made the mistake of reading reviews and that's what was causing my paralysis.

Anyway y'all, learn from me. Don't be me. Just buy something from a brand you feel you can trust and install it. Don't get hung up on reviews, half or more of online reviews these days are total BS.
