Something that gets overlooked with Disasters is the importance of having cash on hand in small bills.

In 1989 I lived on Ocean St. in Santa Cruz California, during the Loma Prieta earthquake, it was rough. I was young and had to pay 20 for a loaf of bread, not because they charged me that but because a 20 was all I had and I thought I needed bread.
I told myself that would never happen again and so I started an emergency cash fund. I was poor and started with 100, its been 1K for 20 years now but it has paid for its self many times over.

We used it when we had to evacuate from a forest fire, we've also used it after a tornado, 2 floods and several hurricanes.

Right now the lines for gas are 2-4hrs long EXCEPT where they take cash only. Those had 2-4 car back up max.
Stores are selling goods for cash only, if you need it, gotta have cash to buy it.

Both our cars have get home bags, I keep 200 in ones in each bag. I did not need the cash when I used them but it was sure nice to not worry about it.

*Please don't turn this into a gouging thread, I don't care about that. Make your own thread*

I’ve always kept $20-30 in the glovebox as a small emergency gas fund in case wallet was lost/stolen or the like. Probably should up that given current gas prices and mileage of the Tundra!

Yea I have a couple hundred in the truck but it’s all 20s. You’ve made me think about breaking up some of that to 5s and 1s though

Sounds like good advice to me, especially if you have a console safe to keep it in.

Never would have thought of going down to $1s but that is a smart idea. My wife and I have an emergency fund of about 4 months' expenses, but we don't keep a cash reserve in the cars. We just keep cash in the house to pay the kids for certain chores, but that's not the same. You may have inspired me to keep $100 in $1s in the Tundra and my wife's Flex...

I think I’ll just do 20 in ones 80 in fives and 100 in twenties. A stack of 200 one dollar bills gets a little thick

Can't overstate this enough as well... I learned the hard way while taking the walk of shame with a gas can..... Since emergency gas deliveries only take cash, and as usual I had just used my last $20 in the truck... my gauge is off so I carry gas and cash, just in case.

    Great thread..
I've got around $500 cash in one of the safes just for emergencies.
I never thought about having it on hand in the truck.
As @Tundra234 stated, I've got the console safe.
Might be a good idea to stash a $100 in broken bills in it...

I usually try to keep at least $10 in singles to tip my Sonic kids for my Route 44 1/2 and 1/2 iced tea with lemon in the console at all times...

It doesn't hurt to keep some gas on hand too. I just filled up our 5 gallon container yesterday and added some Sta-Bil. I usually cycle it once a year.

Excellent post, and I agree; we don't keep tons on hand, but am rethinking 'where' I keep my 2-4 month emergency fund. We also keep funds around in different areas (both cash and money with intrinsic value).

I have 20 gallons in cans of non ethanol that I cycle through our cars every 6 months because of the heat. Truck and Explorer get filled before every storm so thats 78 gal. on hand. I can run our generator for 26 days @ 12 hrs a day if I had to, hopefully never do.

They stole a cop car yesterday in New Orleans that was breaking up a fight at a gas station. People who have nothing to lose treat emergency's as if its a game, really sad to see. I have no desire to be around people when things are sideways so I do as much as I can to prevent it.

Never a bad idea to have a few hundred handy - in 5s/10s.

Always keep 5 or 10 singles in the car for parking. Yes - I’ve had my car broken into and cash stolen - but it’s hidden and not like the junkies KNEW it was there…they just as well could have cut their hands up for 59 cents in change.

We are a cashless society these days - problem is systems can be unavailable in times of disaster temporarily. Cash is never a bad thing to have handy - just make sure you keep it secure and not all in one spot (at the same time don’t spread it so far apart you forget about it either…got a few good stories on people doing that).

I was in high school back then but remember hearing of the cash issue.

Credit/debit cards are great, but they require power. When was the last time someone saw a cashier break out one of those imprint widgets to make a paper receipt? I doubt most places even have them anymore, let alone have an employee that knows how to use it.

Since I have a family, I keep enough available to cover a hotel room and a few meals. But I use it most often when we happen upon a farmers market or similar festival where the small vendors won’t necessarily have a card reader.

Great points. Very good idea to cycle through cash … saw this just yesterday! I’ve heard/read too many presentations/papers on “the cost of cash” (cost to the government…) —never give up on cash.

Thanks and thanks 50 buck for the heads up!

This isn’t a political position, it’s not on either major political part platform- this is a US Department of Treasury initiative stemming from the fact that the literal cost of printing and securing money (cash) is expensive and there is likely a good bit of tax avoidance associated with cash purchases. If tax policy, as presented in the Treasury Department’s General Revenue Estimate is “political” let me know and I’ll delete this.

edit: just adding that this proposal was put forward under the current administration and the prior administration.

I would of made it political. Does this apply to our representatives in congress or just the peons The Biden administration has no business of what I do with my money. I pay more than enough taxes. Their only concern should be what they will squander our money on next.

Speaking of the imprint carbon copy devices for card purchases, none of my cards are embossed anymore - numbers are all just printed now, so the old time card readers won't work either.

Not only cash folks, keep plenty of water in rotation. Personally, I keep plenty of non-parishable foods, batteries, communications equip., medical supplies, all weather clothing, fuel, ammunition, tools to turn off gas water, electric, etc. Lots and lots of things can and do happen. It's nice to have peace of mind.

The problem I have with this scenario is actually getting the 78 gallons out of the vehicles to feed the generator. Most, if not all cars these days have a restrictor in the fuel tank that will prevent you from siphoning gas out of the vehicle. Getting gas back out of a vehicle is going to be a problem. The ONLY vehicle I have ever seen that had an actual drain plug on the bottom of a gas tank was a 1999 Montero that I used to own. It was easy to drain the tank, but on most every other vehicle, you're going to have a problem getting that gas back out again.

Disconnect fuel rail or filter, add a hose, turn on key. The pump will pump it dry quickly.
