Bogging on initial accelration

So, the truck bogs or more of a push the accelerator and there's a delay in take off.also if idling in gear and you push the gas, same thing. Under driving conditions she picks right up. I just got her and haven't delved into the engine and also have zero experience with Toyota.
She's an 06 dc 4.7

 

Missing lots of details.

Any codes registered? Not all codes will trip CEL.

What mileage is on the truck?

Any idea what the previous maintenance history of the truck is?

There's a myriad of things it could potentially be. Knowing what's been done for fuel, air, and spark would be a huge help in throwing out suggestions.

We've seen several stumble threads. Lately, a couple were likely bad Throttle Position Sensors. Can be fuel delivery related also. Cracked/old/counterfeit coils and plugs bought off A-Zon and fleabay are other common sources. So many variables, but it's stab in the dark w/out knowing the above and maybe more.

 

That happened to me, truck drove like that (sputter from takeoff and drive fine) for a couple weeks no CEL. Finally a code popped up turned out to be a bad coil. Hopefully thats all yours is. Good luck

 

I know, you're absolutely right and I understand. Haven't pulled codes yet, after work today. 240k on the clock. It was a one owner truck but that said, it was a landscapers. He did not give them to me but did have a binder full of maintenance receipts. Body is mostly fine except for lower part of both pass doors, somebody backed into them. He included the rear shell door, both are still fully functional. Also needs a tailgate, already got that. It needs a rear bumper and trailer hitch dinged and rust, he included both brand new.

 

A coil would be great

 

First thing I'd do, other than making sure the frame isn't rotting anywhere:

1. Go through the receipts given and create a timeline of what was replaced and when. Be thankful you got that. Pay special attention to when the last time the timing belt was done. Interfere Also, look for the last time anything with spark was replaced (coils, plugs), if MAF was replaced, if Fuel pump was replaced.
2. Go to Toyota's VIN lookup page here. Plugin your VIN. When the results come back, scroll to the bottom of the screen and claim the truck by clicking on the 'sign up' process. Check to see if any recalls have been done (or outstanding) and any evidence of dealer maintenance. Add to your timeline.
3. Go to a car parts store and get a free code scan before you do any maintenance. There could be a red herring stored in the system that would be an instant "AHA!" for someone here at Tundras.com.
4. Inspect things if not - Start with the simple stuff first that doesn't cost much of anything. Check for anything loose in the engine area. Check coil tubes and ends for cracks and check the plugs. Coils closest to the firewall are the ones that tend to get chewed up first IIRC.
5. By all means, let us know what you find. And on the timing belt, that's nothing to do with this stutter issue. If you don't see anything changed within the last 10 years or 70-80k miles, you should remove a couple of 10mm fasteners from the passenger side cover and check it for cracks and dryness. Interference engine, if it breaks, engine is FUBAR.

delay in take off, idling in gear and push gas.... Did you just say the same thing twice or are you describing 2 different symptoms?

So, 3 tests, all in gear? Problems only at initial throttle from idle? What does it do out of gear?

Sounds like A/F mix, MAF, TB, Air filter, are easiest starting points. As a misfiring coil or plug would give you a CEL. I would only be guessing but sounds like a gummy throttle plate that allows limited airflow at initial throttle. Driving around you are already open beyond the throttle obstruction. So not noticing then. Bring 0-15% throttle back into the equation and diag from there.

A cheap obd reader is helpful if you can read realtime airflow g/s. But, without that....

1. What is cold idle rpm? in P,N and D? MAF g/s?
2. What is warm idle rpm? in P,N and D? MAF g/s?
3. At operating temp, what is the throttle response like in P/N, from idle to 1500 rpm? 1500 rpm MAF g/s?
a) under slowly increasing pedal pressure, no initial response, or a dead spot you can feel as the pedal travels?
b) steady increasing pressure
c) with a stomp to WOT

 

Then check the condition of your spark plugs, old plugs may still fire and avoid a CEL, but draw too much electricity to burn efficiently.

she does throw a cel, was told by po it's for the cat. truth be told i've been so busy i haven't gotten around to her yet. i did order the chilton because dam, the fsm is off the chart expensive. i will check everything listed and report back in a few days. all good info guys and thank you.

No chance…us (we?) 04 owners seem to be in limbo. There’s a FSM for 00-03, and the one above for 05-06. I can’t explain it. I’ve found that my 04 is most like the 00-03 models, so that’s the one I use. 05 introduced the more powerful engine, plastic manifold, secondary air system, “sealed” transmission (et al). All that makes sense. Why there is no 04 FSM, not so much…
