What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

As practical as these caps are I can't come to put mine on my truck. It came with it when I bought it and it's paint matched but I can't stand to look at my truck with it on there from the back.
Fantastic idea for reverse lights though.

Planning to use one of those two brands at some point to see if it solves anything.

 

Are you guys saying issues with AGM can be fixed by applying this fuse-shaped diode to the system? (I assume that's for the engine fusebox, not interior?)

Will it do anything to fix fluctuations in the gauge? If so, I'm game to try it. Never heard of HKB, seems like they specialize in this specific avenue.

 

It goes in the Alt-S fuse slot. I have a digital voltmeter hardwired so I don't go by the truck's gauge, but after I installed it my voltage was back up to the proper range of 14.1-14.5v with the engine running.

There was a thread on the 4Runner forum the guy from HKB (Leigh) commented on with a bunch of information on this. That's what sold me on getting it from him. His prices are in AUD and it ships from Australia.

 

High end AGM batteries require 14.6-14.8v to properly fully charge

 

It’s a diode in the shape of an ATM fuse that goes in the Alt-s fuse location. Looks like @des2mtn has covered the rest of it.

 

These AGM batteries sound like more hassle than they are worth unless you are powering a lot of extra things. I'm with @CodyP on this one.

 

I’ve had one in my 01 taco now avalon, 10 years later it still tests at 80% health and 800cca. They’re worth it. No corrosion to deal with and they last twice-three times as long

 

What brand is that one? I recall a few people saying their AGM batteries only lasted 3-4 years. They also cost 2-3 times as much so isn't that essentially a wash?

I hear the Odyssey extreme AGM batteries are a popular choice. I might try that one next.

 

I'm seeing about a 10-15% price difference at Advance on DieHard AGM vs. Diehard non-AGM. Non-AGM around $200-210 before core, AGM around $230-240 before core IIRC.

 

Just an fyi, there was another member who was having overheating issues and it was because the lower part of his shroud wasn't on.

 

You absolutely need the shroud.
Fans are very inefficient if a low and high pressure zone can’t be made, this High and low pressure zone is created by the shround being very close to the fan blade edges. Depending on the design of the blade and shroud, you either want the blades to be split by the shroud edge, or be tucked into the shroud

 

Does anyone know if these are chrome or black?

 

Does DieHard use virgin lead? I remember reading if you are going to go AGM, make sure you get a virgin. Northstar was the popular brand on here for that reason.

 

Somewhat related, I did the spin test on my fan and it moves quarter rotation before stopping. Good indication I need to replace the fan clutch?

 

How many batteries are you buying??? Truck batteries are like $98 from autozone, Costco and the likes….

 

Yeah, for the crappy batteries you'll need to change every 3-4 years. I prefer buying batteries every 6-8 years minimum.

Batteries are one of those very few things where you usually get what you pay for, legitimately. But you can also get screwed paying premium if you're not careful

@FrenchToasty so far no heating issues. No shroud for about 3-4 months. On a different topic and current one, my gauge started fluctuating a bit and low and behold my alternator only putting out 13.37-13.48 while driving and AGM battery has been a bit low recently.

 

Ain't nobody got time for that. I need to buy one good battery so I have more money for beer.

I’m not sure that warrants a fan clutch. Are you having any heating/over heating issues?
I’m sure mine was fine but I changed it anyways. It’s not an enjoyable job, but it’s not that bad either. I didn’t have the holder tool so it was extra enjoyable……
If you do decide to take the plunge, I would order 4 new nuts, mine had already been mangled, and I further left my mark.

 

Yes, people have a tendency to believe they were just put there because the car companies had nothing better to do when the reality is the part serves a vital purpose. Not saying the OP believes this, just generalizing.

 

The fan should freely spin ~1 full rotation after a good push. If it doesn't the hydrostatic clutch is wearing out, so you may want to consider a new one relatively soon.

Haven't even turned over the V6 yet this week.

 

You and me both. I don't remember if you were around for the shim-pow conversation me and PHM had about a fix to the "squealing brakes in reverse", but I still have those shims sitting somewhere. And a 3 pod guage cluster I wanna put it. And my steering rack. And my carrier bearing. That's just the parts I have waiting on me. All the other shit I need to fix is a whole nother can of worms.

 

Yup. I've posted pics of stuff I purchased for the truck over the last year+, not much installed. My audio still isn't done but I've had my enclosure installed, all wiring, subs, and everything else purchased for 6+ months. I haven't even swapped out my interior door handles like I wanted or hardwired my dashcam and autodim mirror. This is all generally easy stuff when I compare to what Noah's neck deep into on the crackwagon.

I've noticed a trend for me. As my dissatisfaction with work has slowly increased, my productivity and output has heavily declined. Losing interest in projects. Starting things but never finishing. Finding reasons not to do it. Even the hunt for a new gig has suffered. I don't feel fatalistic and wouldn't go so far as my brother did on that topic, but man ... it kinda sucks. I'd love to do nothing but spend a whole week or even just a dedicated weekend neck-deep in the truck.
