Joe Mammas Pro - CB +3 or Icon RXT?

Here’s my new toy in it's current stock form. I’ll be building it up as time permits. First up will be a little lift and some bigger tires.



I’ve settled on the Westcott Designs front only kit but could use some input on the rear lift. For those with experience using either the CB +3 shackles or the Icon RXT leaf packs can you make a recommendation for either and explain? The truck will have inconsistent moderate to heavy weight in the back from a bed rack, recovery gear, camping gear, water, firearms, ammo, range equipment, etc. maybe a RTT…maybe. Is it worth the trouble to install the Icon leaf pack on stage 1 and use the add leaf as weight increases? Would it be better to use the CB +3 shackles and airbags to prevent sag (is this possible?)? Does one option offer any ride quality or performance advantage over the other?

 

I have the RTX leaf kit and it's currently on option 3 with no additional weight in the back. It's a bit stiff but once I throw some weight back there it'll be perfect. I'd say do option 2 and as long as you have something back there you'll enjoy the ride quality.

 

Thank you. Did you lift the front? Even with the Westcott kit I think I’ll have quite a bit of rake on option 2 until I get loaded up. But that may be better than having to mess with it again later.

 

Having run both I prefer the rxt leaf pack out back. I’m also on option 2 and I have no rake with a rack and rtt


the reason I went away from the shackles was after hauling some flooring I flattened my stock leaf, so if you decide to go with shackles definitely look into airbags as the stock leaf pack is rather soft. The ride quality is a bit stiffer as mentioned but I prefer the stiffness.

 

I went with the stage 8 kit from icon that has the 2.5 coilovers up front and I did the SPC UCAs. I have a lot of rake on option 3 with no load in the back.

 

Not trying to hijack the thread but do you have a RTT on top of your rack? If so what is it? Looks like its level or just under the height of the shark-fin antenna?

 

Yup. It’s a ikamper skycamp mini. I run it backwards so the bulge is up front and it sits just above the shark fin.

Thanks for the picture, that’s a nice truck! I see what you mean about rake unloaded. If only there were a way to stay level that doesn’t involve airbags and compressors. I want to minimize the number of possible failure / breaking points. I’m not sure if an auto level airbag system is rugged enough for repeated use off-road.

I’m still curious about the shackle lift option for a soft ride but don’t want to drive on flat leafs either. Anyone else have extensive experience with setups using lift shackles and add leafs or other methods for maintaining rear height and spring function?

 

That’s a real nice looking set up. Have you posted (or can you) details on your rack system and load out? I was looking at a Leitner ACS forged with the side boxes, yours looks like a solid candidate. I like how low the RTT sits!

as for the setup I have a build thread and I’m on ig at “trdisthewrd” but quickly here …I’m on a kbvoodoo aluma 10in max rack, with there locking box. I keep my air hoses, tow straps and various tools inside,I also have a molle panel attached on the backside for extra storage

so far it has been great. I’m really digging how compact everything is, prior to this my wife and I had our ikamper on her 4runner and it was very top heavy. If you have any questions or wanna see other pics I’m always happy to help

I think I’ve seen your truck on IG under the #toyotatundra. Pretty much what I have in mind, modular and as low-pro as possible.

 

An update to close out this topic at least for now. After weighing the pros and cons of the various options I decided to not lift my truck at all and simply upgrade the tires to 285/70r18 Nitto Ridge Grapplers. I can’t bring myself to sacrifice performance, fuel economy, and add unnecessary weight for a few extra tire inches. If ground clearance becomes an issue I’ll reassess. For now will focus on adapting the rear suspension to handle any additional weight I add to the bed on an as needed basis. I’ll share pics of the tires when installed in case anyone finds it helpful. I’ll probably start ANOTHER! “build” thread for my truck…because I can…
