Not really expecting to get much off MSRP, went in thinking I’ll get all the dealer adds off and couldn’t even get quite there when I walked.

The big issue was the trade. I have a 2021 4x4 TRD OR Tacoma, thinking about upsizing due to kids, but they offered 9k below black book (trade)….9k

With the taco being essentially the best resale vehicle, i literally laughed out loud when he handed me the quote and they then came up 1k for a final offer quote

Invoice on the Tundra I’m looking at was around 38.5k, MSRP with dealer adds was 43.5k. Idk what’s going on right now, but did they really think they were seriously going to net nearly 14k on the deal? I think they wanted me to walk when I proposed shrinking the trade differential from 12k to 2k using reasonable numbers…..

I'm not surprised about the Tundra deal, but am surprised about the Tacoma. When I traded my 2020 Tacoma TRD OR long bed, they gave me more on trade than I paid for it the year prior. At the same time, they made it clear they would not negotiate on the Tundra. Straight up MSRP or no deal. I didn't really care about that because they paid me so much for my Tacoma.

Hell, even here in Denver the small used car dealers would give you more in trade. The Yota dealers have very little new Tundra's if any. Going to get worse.

I did not know the Tacoma is currently the best resaling vehicle. I talk to a lot of folks who trade their trucks in almost every year and know a few people who work at Toyota dealerships. Within the last year, I was under the impression that Tundras had the highest resale value. Then again, geographics are probably a factory but go figure. Its a crazy time right now trucks, thats for sure.

They get quite a few suckers actually. So, yes they start off with a high net deal. Later when they come down the customer feels better and buys the vehicle and they still make a profit. Don't forget they get 1-2k in holdbacks paid by mfg too after the sale.

I would have done the same. Laughed at him. And start going to other dealers.

Yikes. I got 28,000 for my 2018 plain SR5 with 45,000 miles back in December when the used truck market wasn't even as bad as it is now.

    Check another dealer for sure.

In 2018 I was trading my '15 Tacoma for a brand new Tundra. Found a dealer that had the exact Tundra I wanted, but their value for my Tacoma trade was terrible. Ended up going to another dealer, found the same truck, and they did much better. First dealer called me back a day or so later to see if I was still interested, told them I made the deal with another dealer.

Just a few months ago, traded that '18 Tundra in for a '21 Tundra, just because I wanted to move to a CrewMax and wanted this generation Tundra. They gave me a great trade value for my '18 Tundra, less than $2k under what I paid for it three years ago. But yeah, they wouldn't budge on the price of the new one. I think I paid sticker.

Suckers do exist… I sold my Tundra to Carvana for $44k that I paid $39k for (MSRP was $42k) and they sold it for $47k. So someone bought a used Tundra for $5k over MSRP when new.

You might could find a different buyer for your Taco, then go buy the Tundra you want. A little more effort but you might make out better.

I sold my leased 17 Tacoma to Carvana with 4 payments left. Made $900 dollars. Carvana turned around and sold it for $2500k less than what I bought it for. Who would buy a 3 year old truck for $2500 less than a new one makes no sense. Anyways, turned around and leased a20 tundra for less than the taco. And with the outrageous prices I will buy out my lease at the end for $25k. I went to the dealer the other day to activate my alarm and the cheapest tundra I saw was a 18 for $41k.
