Chevy/GM also decided a 13.4” screen will be a thing, so Toyota can’t even crow about a big screen. LOL.

This is why Toyota has a tiny market share in the 1/2 ton market. Toyota moves at glacial pace updating products, and their competitors move fast. Long term reliability is nice, but for the average new truck buyer who trades in every 3-5 years and is always in warranty, reliability alone isn’t compelling enough.

    Just for your information....I did an 18-year road test of a full-size pickup with a 3.4 L V-6....

It was an Aught-Two Tundra SR5 Access Cab with the 190 h.p. fuel-injected engine. It was a good truck, same one as in my avatar. Acceleration was just adequate, but I was pulling a 4,320-lb. truck down the road with the same engine that was intended for a 3,470-lb. Tacoma. Oddly enough, the payload for that combination on my 2002 Tundra was 1,680 lbs.,* I drove it til 2020 when I traded for a 2015 CrewMax 1794.woah-woah-diylol-com-bill-ted-excellent-adventure-3-movie-53356294.jpg , that was a big step into the future: cassette tape to CD player, six to eight cylinders, 5-speed manual to 6-speed automatic.

I'm trying to imagine going from the 3.4 to the 3.5 V-6 and from 190 to 409 h.p. during that 18 years with the 2002 Tundra.

*My boss accused me of having a 1/2-ton truck once right after I got it. If he wasn't too busy playing video games on the job, I would have dragged him over to look at the door sticker which says otherwise. Not 1/2-ton, but: "180-above-3/4-ton-you-hoser".

1/2 ton pickup hauling 13K, absolutely no way jose. Once upon a time, I regularly hauled a 32ft boat on a triaxle, roughly 14.5K with a Chebbie 2500HD. In tail wag the dog moments, that tow would wag the 8K 2500HD (Dmax with Cummings) all over the road. Passing semi's (they mostly passed me) at night would cause my life to flash in front of my eyes.

I don't disagree. I have said in another post that anyone who goes near those numbers in a half ton is out of their mind.

At this point, the halfton towing numbers are all about bragging rights and chest beating only.

Right? I just looked it up. Man, the ZR2 looks friggen badass. I'm looking forward to what the updated Sierra looks like. I'm a Toyota guy first, but I won't turn my nose up at a GM or Chevy.

Looks like the same cheap plastic is being used for buttons on the wheel and such. The design/layout is much improved, but materials still look like the same stuff they've had for a decade. I drove chevy trucks too much for work to have much more than disdain for them. I can't get comfortable in them, the seating position is just off to me, the hoods are huge when in the driver seat, and they got all the $$ they'll get from me when they went bankrupt.

    Just my $.02 on it.

My AT4 is very cheaply made, cheap materials, panels not aligned inside and out, when I pull my phone charger out of the cigarette lighter the center console pulls away over an inch, etc. Don't get me started on the crank no start thing with the 3.0 duramax. I am pretty sure I said this before, but this AT4 was my first and last GM product. They look nice, but then when you live with them you realize how many corners they cut. In one of the GM forums someone said "I tell people that if Lexus made a truck, this is what it would feel like." GM loyalists are interesting:rofl:.

Well, a company that sold 424,000,000 cars and went bankrupt. You'd think that would be hard to do.

That’s why I have my own tow ratings

anything more than 7500 gets a bigger truck, you need some damn reserve

That’s a knee slapper. The Tundra is literally what would happen (plus badging changes) if Lexus built a truck!!

Speaking of GM products, in my experience the interiors feel like they’re falling apart after about 100k. Dashes wobble and squeak, etc.

Good reminder because that new Chevy looks bad ass.

My 220k+ Tundra has none of the shaking dash/inexplicable squeaks etc. Sure, I could complain about mismatched plastics but at the end of the day, Toyota wins. Again.

Technology has improved and is continuing to improve with stability control and other traction control type options. Google says a 90s Chevy/f150 can tow 5000-7500 lbs. Gen 1 tundra tow rating is about 7k lbs. In 2006 people were probably saying no way I’d ever tow 10k in a 1/2 ton, then Gen 2 came out. In 20 years it’ll be 15k, and people will be saying no way I’d ever go over 13k.

While your logic is sound, even TFL who does these tests has said these advertised numbers in the 1/2 ton are unreasonable and unrealistic.

I fail to see how this new GM interior is so much better.

Full disclosure: I didn't hate the interiors before the refresh.

The rise in general stupidity and lack of personal responsibility is leading to gullible buyers that believe whatever they're being sold. That is why the numbers keep going up.

Well from what I can find, a Ford Model TT can tow about 4K (but it might actually be a 1 ton truck). So it went up 9k in 100 years. So in 2121 we will all be here talking about how no way our flying 1/2 tons can tow 22k.

It’s the same seats and they’re awful seats. I had the new gen yukon Denali for a week. Looks nice until you touch the cheap plastic inside. This looks a little better but wonder what it feels and sounds like.

That’s lucky, every large Gm suv I’ve owned felt like a pos after 45k miles.

yukon vibration and buffering buyback at 30k miles, Tahoe sold at 44k with new transmission, and traverse sold at 48k with rusting exhaust, new transmission, new ECM, new axles, new seat, new door trims.
GM makes such good looking trucks but they’re disappointing to own.

Not what I said in any way, shape, or form. I'm saying that manufacturers can put out crazy high numbers and buyers don't question it. For crying out loud, how many people have we all seen who are shocked, appalled, and indignant about the low payload on a Tundra?

Also, standards are incredibly slow to change. Look at the DOT rating on Motorcycle helmets. It's weak compared to ECE or Snell because it's based off standards that are older than I am.

I think the Zr2 exterior looks better than the 4th gen pro and I like the 4th gen over the 2nd/3rd. I just hope they fixed the leaky rear windows.

For the last 14 years, one of the arguments for low payload or justification for going over was that Toyota is conservative and doesn’t play the numbers game like the domestics. Now it appears people are saying they are over estimating and no way the numbers are safe.

If the payload goes up, will we also say no way that’s safe in a 1/2 ton and that I’d never haul more than 1200 lbs with passengers?

Again, I did not say Toyota overestimates or doesn't do testing. I'm saying that the claims of current manufacturers stating a 1/2 ton truck is ok towing 13000 lbs or more are uncomfortably high. They do testing that meets the standards. How old are the standards? Are the standards still relevant? What is the standard used for testing?

The new Chevy ZR2 has selectable front and rear lockers, can engage both separately. Why is it so hard for any other auto maker to do this? The Tacoma can only be locked in 4 lo. I also doubt the new trd pro will have a front locker, let alone a rear one. The current model doesn’t even have a rear locker.

I guess I look at it as a difference between safe and capable. My truck can probably pull 20k pounds. Is it safe driving 65 mph doing that? Probably not. It appears to me you are saying the 13k is over estimated for being safe. (Also my original post on this topic quoted someone else and referred to the 10 or so posts after that one, not just your post)

If you go back to my first post you quoted - 12245, I said the technology changes. That can cause the standards to change. Which might allow a 1/2 ton to tow 13k safely. And even do it with no transmission cooler.

Awesome. Competition is good for us (the consumers). That said, the company that is currently bringing us brand new engines with bent lifters, a rear window leak with no solution, transmission issues, and tons of computer/electrical freak outs isn’t getting a dime of my money until they get a solid track record of their products actually working. I wanted a truck that I’d never have to take back to the dealer for a single thing. That’s what I got! :headbang:
The new one will have a rear locker. Notice in the official Toyota pics that it has multi-terrain select and crawl control. The only Tacomas and 4Runners that had those features came with a rear locker. It’s part of the package. I’d be VERY surprised if it had MTS and CC and no locker.
