Yes I know it’s been done so here’s my question.

How safe is it to do it? How Many have seen the chain Fail?

Had a conversation with a guy a couple days and he insisted that he has seen so many chains fail due to the 35 inch tire being so heavy. He warned me that I could kill some one and so on and so on. Just want to get peoples opinion and real life story’s.

On my first Tundra Gen 2, I had a 35 stuffed in there for several years while off roading, etc. ZERO ISSUES. I now run 37' and unfortunately they do not fit.

Also... two things... proof of failure? Second... was he supposed to do the work for you and used the "failure" as an excuse not to? (I have run into this before).

I was questioning his "experience" or "research" regarding the "chain failure". Your truck breaking down wasn't even a consideration. What a knucklehead your tow truck driving buddy is. Now this would be an fun experiment to run... how many pounds per square inch of pressure would it take to break the chain... in a real world application! Ripping along in the desert hitting pot holes and bottoming out may rip it off... driving down the road during normal use... uh no.

I commemorate the attempt, but it's psi or ksi (pounds per square inch) for pressure, foot pounds is a unit of energy (or torque in normal conversation).

Just do it man. Bend or cut the locating tabs on the spare. Lube all the chain and crank assembly up while you have it down, and put a new tire on. Good to go. I can only fit a 33 inch due to my shackles being larger. But a 35 would’ve fit with the stock shackles or any other brand than the one I went with LOL.

Right!? Been contemplating upgrading the leaf pack or at least changing to another brand. The only reason it fits now is cause I Jerry rigged a spacer in between the trailer hitch and the tire to push it cab forward just a bit.

I put a used 35" on a 20" wheel under mine just to make sure it fits. Only thing you will need help with is guiding it up but other than that you will probably never ever even get to use it. Drove a Tacoma on KO2s for 5 years without a flat.

You just use a block of wood or what? Mine just barely rubs the driver side shackle bolt. I pushed it back while someone cranked but it wasn’t enough.

    :rofl:Yeah

It still looks like it might rub the driver side slightly. But it doesn’t seem to be hurting anything. I had bigger grander ideas, but the block of wood has stayed in place for a while now.

Hahaha, great minds think alike. Yeah mine will probably just wear a notch I’m the lug it’s rubbing on but I’m too paranoid, was thinking maybe cut some old tire up for shim. Or just a block of wood if it’s worked for you. Thanks for the reply. :hattip:

My solution was to just keep the stock spare under there and hope I didn’t get a flat. Never got a spare to match the others.
Never had a flat, but always wondered how the stock spare would work with 35’s on the other three until I got to a tire shop. :notsure:

I had a 295/70R18 matching spare under the bed for years. I have toytec shackles and had a little room on both sides of the tire, so a 35 could fit. I carry a 37" spare in the bed now and it saved me a few weeks ago when i had a flat on the highway. problem was i did not hav ea jack at the time that could lift the truck high enough, now have a pro eagle jack in the bed

From what I read, you can limp to a tire shop as long as you put the spare on the front and are not in four-wheel-drive. Otherwise, the spare can jack you up in the rear because the wheels will be spinning at different speeds. I don’t remember how that jacks up the truck though.

I tried mounting my 37 inch underneath but it didn’t fit. Even tried airing it down and putting a ratchet strap around it to compress it a little bit, but it still hit the leafs. Now I just chain it in the bed whenever I go on long drives (in the garage all other times). I have a tire patch kit if I pick up a nail, and have onboard air. Bout all you can do with 37s.

Edit: as others have said, I don’t think a chain would fail either. Unless the tire wasn’t snug, or rust. It’s a freaking chain.

Sounds like a solid plan. I’m not that ballsy, even though I can’t remember last flat I’ve had I’m convinced it’ll happen 100 miles from any town, probably at dark.

I just removed my stock spare...any buyers? Haha. I have a full size spare that I plan on tying down in my bed on my trip to Montana this weekend from San Diego. I'm thinking of going the Rigd Supply Megaswing route.

Ended up using a hockey puck for a shim. Shaved a little off and was perfect thickness.

Anybody have heat issues with a 35 under there? I just cut my guides out and sucked my 35x12.50 up under there. I have the TRD exhaust and its fairly close. Not sure how hot those rear pipes get but I don’t want a fire for sure.
