1st gens too small for 6'7" guy?

    Hey all,

I recently sold my 2005 Silverado (270k) because it was really starting to get rotted out underneath and I want to jump on the Tundra bandwagon! This upcoming spring I'll be heading down south to look for a rust free truck! I'm in northern WI.

I've been looking at 2nd gens, but the 1st gens are far more affordable. I'd like to keep my spending below $10k, and I'd like to have an 05-06 crew cab 4x4. My only concern is if I'd fit or not. If it's any consolation, the beater I'm driving is an '00 Prizm lol. I know anything will be better than that, but I'm just curious if you guys think I should just stick with the 2nd gens for the size alone?

I'm also considering 4runners as well, as my wife and I drove our buddy's out to Montana, and they seem to have pretty good towing capabilities, but they're more expensive than 1st gen Tundras and the utility of having a bed would be really nice again!

I don't mean to be a debbie downer but this is very unlikely. Most 05-06 Double Cabs are going to be a decent amount more than that unless they are in really rough shape. That's not to say you can't find one, but it might be difficult. Prices have skyrocketed in the last 6-8 months.

As for size, can you find one locally to at least sit in? I agree with buying a rust-free Southern truck.

    Welcome from WA!
6'7" here also, we have an 04 Sequoia with a sunroof and I fit great. Leg room could be a little better but not a deal breaker at all.

Hey Vol, appreciate the response man. I've already found loads (in my area and where I plan on buying) for under 10k. Prices seem to be stabilizing again.

And thanks NWPirate, I guess that's all I need to know!

You guys are making me self conscious about my height... that being said im 5'10'' and 6/8ths and the 1st gen fits me great but I feel like at 6'7'' I would be completely uncomfortable, I would try for a 4.7 2nd gen that could be closer to your price range and give you more room.

Please share these under $10k 05-06 DC 4x4 (most desirable model) that are rust free. Inquiring minds are calling BS. These typically run from $14k for higher mileage ones up to $28k for pristine low mileage ones. Anything less than $10k has to be a clapped out rust bucket.

Autotrader shows 2 rust buckets within 300 miles of Wisconsin. Both over $10k. Be wary of what looks like a good deal with one of these trucks. Good trucks bring big money. Cheap ones aren't good trucks, and need loads of money to restore. If there not already too far gone.

I vote for you getting a 2nd gen for more leg room. I have a 3rd gen and a 1st gen (and a 36” inseam) and sitting in the 1st gen for off-roading where I need to brace myself, the room is fine, but for long pavement trip to/from, it sucks. I kinda “stand” in my seat to try to alleviate back pain. I’m looking at customizing the seat slides to create more leg room but, due to the slight elevation gain of the rear floor area, this won’t be an easy solution.

Definitely find a way to drive one a long distance before buying, unless you have short legs in proportion to your overall height.

The seats in the first gen are not the most comfortable for long drives. I've wanted to upgrade seats forever. If Evil chimes in he switched his seats and had brackets that slide a little further back. His setup is way more comfortable.

Go test drive one. Only way to find out if it fits you is to sit in one. Everyone's body is a little different.

My son is about 6 foot 5 and drives my 06 4runner, so it is possible to fit and be comfy. The 4unner has a sunroof, he would fit better if it didnt, so you may want to look at trucks without one, you will gain 1-2 inches more headroom.

It turns out that the trucks with manual seats have more legroom and headroom actually as the mechanism is not in the way. I also found this to be for the 4runners that I measured and ended up with so there is that.

I have both a 1st gen and 3rd gen and the newer truck has insanely more room in every direction and is thus less cramped in every way than the 1st gen, just no comparison really.

On the other hand the seats in the 3rd gen are so hard and unforgiving that the space might not matter butt this is something you just have to experience yourself and see if you agree, some dont seem to.

I have done cross country drives in both and far prefer the 3rd gen truck when it comes down to it. I also had a 2nd gen and exactly the same observations as the 3rd to me.

Also I can just not get comfy in any Taco or 4runner that I have tried and I have tried a lot of them! No space and narrow seats on top of the other cramped dimensions.

Why cant they just make seats that will slide back as far as possible without regard for the 2nd row?!? It can not be a techological challenge and if you dont need it then dont use it but if you do the bitching could be bypassed if they would just use the space thats already there!

I mean, these guys basically summed it up....

.... unless you have some killer connection at a private auctionhouse, if you want both rust free and $10k or under, these guys aren't kidding. You may get rust hidden or recent frame replacement at that price but I'd be shocked if you could get a southern rust-free truck for those numbers.

I've got a family friend in Alabama who works for a dealership and hits auctions weekly, he was shocked I got my truck for what I did (way north of 10) a couple years back. He'd been looking for me at auction for at least 8 months before giving up. "Dealers up north are coming down here and have driven prices up at least 40-50% over what they were, I can't find anything under $13k-14k and that's with 150-250K miles!"

These trucks are extremely notorious for the frames rusting out long before the body. Some that got undercoat have that rust well hidden. Just be careful.

Don't trust prices or quality for things on TrueCar, CarGuru, AutoTrader, etc. I looked at about 2 dozen before finding mine through TrueCar as a trade-in, in rough cosmetic shape, on the back lot of a dealership waiting a detail job that would never fix the paint (and they knew it).

Oh, and obviously don't get a regular cab, which often pull the $8-11k price range in my area, won't work w/your height. Get a non-power-seat double cab, or an access cab and you can modify it or something.

Says the guy who just his crackhead special for less than $3,500 :D

Granted you'll spend $3,500 just to get it back to a point where someone would actually pay $10k for it. But I know you'll do it. Then you can sell off your V6 for $10k. :D:D

None of you all will ever learn. This is the @FirstGenVol broken record. Round, and round we go... always skipping on the same verse. The V6 will never leave until its Fubar. I don't buy vehicles to sell them. I buy vehicles to keep them. Lol

But yes, that was the joke. I knew someone would like my comment knowing full well about my crackhead special. Perhaps a thread title change is in order...

I have plans for the truck, and intend to make that one mine just like I made the V6 mine.
