It goes without saying I will only step on a lot if there is inventory on the lot (probably 2024 and beyond).

Will only be buying if it comes in a crew cab + 6 ft bed config.

Otherwise.. probably time to step up to a 3/4 ton.

Sorry "crew max" with a 6 foot bed. Looks like they are keeping the same cab and bed configs?

    That's too bad..

No, it's not. We do it all the time. And we also find logic to also be overrated.

I agree for the most part. I think the new engine will be just fine. Mostly due to the fact that its boosted. It may not be a world beater, but I'm sure it will perform better than the outgoing V8. The Taco engine sucks because its NA. Boost can overcome a lack of displacement.

It might be done at times on this forum but that never a strong position. Arguments always need to based on a data point.

Good luck driving that monster CM 6.5’ bed. It’s not build for SF for sure

I don't know the big uproar about car engine vs truck engine. The heads, cam and tuning make all the difference. The knock on the Tacoma as a car engine is that it's tuned like a car engine. High rpms to make any power.
An ls1 is a car engine. But if you put a new set of heads, a truck cam, and a tune for it all it makes one hell of a truck engine.

I'll disagree. The reason some perceive that the Tacoma 3rd gen engine "sucks" is not because it's a "car engine" or because it's NA (first time I've heard that one). The real reason the haters hate it is because of how it's tuned to maximize economy.

I signed up on here to learn about the new Tundra. Then I hear some Gen2 Tundra owners mentioning (rarely) engine problems, like "cam tower leak" TF is that? I had to look it up. Oh, seems pretty crappy to me.
I have been on the Titan forums since 2004, and anecdotally, the VK56 doesn't have any engine issues, at all. True, we don't have million-milers, but we do have 300K-500K dudes, and I just can't imagine how much gas it took to do that many miles, let alone a million in a Tundra.
And the reason I am looking at the new Tundra is Nissan totally hosed the Gen 2 of the VK56, those engines needed long-block replacements for cylinder 7 damage in the Titan, XD, Armada and QX. And that's where my brand loyalty ends.

Does that long block cylinder replacement constitute a major reliability issue?

I hear people saying it's the 6AT that sucks.
The 6MT is supposedly better, and it comes with lower final gears that helps. Problem is, the 6MT is only available in weird places in the Tacoma lineup.

    To me, it does.

That is why I said Gen 1 VK56 (PFI) is super reliable, and the Gen 2 VK56 (DI) is so bad I am now considering a Tundra.

And people that get the OV tune on the AT also overwhelmingly say it resolves the sluggish feel at low RPM.

Curious... I don't see the trd pro model on this list. Am I missing something? I'd do a pro with crew max long bed for sure if so.

It sure wouldn't, but cities where driving a dually is ok won't be an issue for a CM 6.5' since it's a foot and a half shorter. One of those things that just takes getting used to, drive 8' bed crew cabs enough and 6.5' ones are no issue. It's only an extra foot over the 5.5', not like you're going from a tiny little Smart car to the full size

I disagree. I still hated driving my ‘18 Taco even with OV Tune. It was still nutless.

I'd like the same config. Unfortunately, it seems most truck companies have justified limiting their off-road trims to short bed crew cabs.
I think it's the same with the Tacoma, you can get a crew cab long bed 4x4 Tacoma, but I don't think it is offered in TRD Pro??

I've had several tunes on my current truck (NA V8) and several tunes on my 2016 GTI (2.0T) and in my experience, "tunes" on NA engines are worthless. Even the ones that say they "improve" transmission shifting seem to rely on placebo effect.
On a turbo car, totally different. I was able to get +80whp on a 3200lb car with a Stage 1 tune, and the car was a beast.
I'm going to eventually get around to removing the tune from my current truck.

I'd still bet Toyota could have tuned that engine to make 90% of the owners happy with it's performance. But they would have complained (more) about the MPG.

Maximize economy??? Spent a week in a 2021 taco few months ago. Going 72 mph with a slight headwind I got 13.7 mpg. Also had a hard time keeping it at 72 mph. I averaged 15.6 for the week. Hate to see it without that maximized economy. Two people in the truck, with two suitcases.

I live in the Seattle area. Possibly worse than SF.
I actually am looking forward to something bigger than I currently drive (Titan Crew Cab Big Tow 5'7" bed) I don't understand why the parking spots are so small compared to other cities, so I love cramming too much truck into too small a spot. It's like my own little middle finger to those that try and force change through design.

The MPG at interstate speeds of 75-80 on my 3rd gen Tacoma was about the same as my Tundra. On my commute to work at 60-65 I would get 22 MPG. Something was wrong with your truck.

That'd basically mean programming out the Atkinson cycle, the 3.5's main reason for existence.
