Trd pro and off road/ black steel aftermarket bumpers

Just looking for some pros and cons. I have a 2017 trd pro tundra in cement. Someone backed into me in a parking lot and I will have to replace my front bumper end cap. I like the fact that my bumpers match the rest of the truck but I’ve been thinking about replacing my bumpers with some black steel ones with led lighting. I really don’t want to lose my front skid plate in the process but I understand some bumpers are not compatible with the trd pro skid plate.

Has anyone done this and what are your thoughts? Keep it stock or go for the bumpers? I’m not planning on selling it anytime soon but I could always put the old ones back on. Is it easy to do?

Go with a black steel bumper…so much better looking than stock! C4 Overland bumper…TRD skid plate works perfectly.

 

Oh yeah. That does look good. Did you do the back bumper too? I’m trying to use the same manufacturer for the front and back because I’m worried the paint or finish won’t match.

 

I like your question! Actually I really love the C4 front bumper…but wanted a spare tire carrier for the rear, which C4 doesn’t offer. So I ordered the Expedition One rear bumper with carrier. I ordered both of them in raw steel and have them powder coated locally so they are the same finish.

I just installed the barricade hd2 on my tundra. I have the TRD skid plate and would have ordered the hd2 skid plate to use both together if it wasn’t on back order

I was hesitant with the black/white versus color keyed on my Super White, but am pleased with the end look; I’d think it would look good on your Cement color.

I also have a dif drop, so had to use a spacer kit on my TRD skid plate…in case you see the aluminum spacers in the photos.

 

Every time I see a pic of this truck I shake my head...well done, well done.

 

I just ordered the same bumper. Looks awesome on yours. Which light bar did you go with and what is the length of the opening? 30 in?

 

How much cutting and modifying is involved with these aftermarket steel bumpers? Are there any that are “plug and play”.

 

According to the description none but I haven’t installed it yet.

 

Let us know how it goes; I would be very interested if there isn’t a lot of modification needed.

I picked one up from a company called SD Lighting here in AZ (the owner was very friendly/helpful)…it’s advertised as a 32”, but the light portion is 30”. it has a center laser led, so I thought I’d try it out. It’s incredibly bright, but you need to purchase a separate wiring harness if you don’t already have a light bar with fuse/button/relay that’s been run (light only come with couple foot long cable with deutsch connector) The opening is 31.5” as I recall from measuring. No need to buy separate mounting bracket for it, the bumper includes a set that’s highly adjustable to get the light sitting in the opening however you’d prefer.

Also, I ordered an H11 wire harness for the fog lights that come with the bumper to retain the factory fog light harness/controls. Would consider Caliraised as another option for you main light bar too-great customer service and fast shipping on the harnesses.

If you have/want to retain use of your front parking sensors, you’ll have to drill the new bumper. I used a 3/4” step bit (the full 3/4”) and then a carbide dremel bit and file to widen it a bit at the bottom and on the sides to get the sensor through. I’ve added a pictures in case you need to reference them for where I relocated mine.

for the bumper I used (barricade hd2) only cutting/modification was for re-installing the factory front parking sensors (in fairness, it tells you that it does not come drilled for reuse of these sensors, and you could just deactivate them with the button in the cabin if you never use them anyway) …also need an additional 8 large washers (10mm x 34). They provide 20, but tell you to use 8 in the first step in mounting the bracket on the factory bumper studs with reuse of the 8 factory nuts (4 on each side). The 20 washers have to be utilized for other parts of the install (not sure why the didn’t include the extra 8 since there are not washers when you remove the factory nuts from the studs. A quick run to ace hardware was simple enough to get the additional washers, but would’ve been nice to know up front.

 

you’re welcome…feel free to pm me if you have any questions when you install. I mounted all my lights and the sensors before mounting up the bumper. If you have a friend to help it would be beneficial as the bumper is heavy/awkward on your own. You don’t need to remove the grill to take off/install the bumper. Plenty of YouTube videos to reference if you search Tundra bumper removal. I was too impatient and did it on my own with a floor jack and some 2x4’s. Also used this on each side at a time to hold it in position to get the alignment the way I wanted with the fenders/wheelwell and gap beneath the grill/under the headlights. Takes a little time, but not difficult. Just hand thread everything on initially so it’s loose to make the adjustments before tightening everything down.

 

I just finished the front bumper. Barricade HD. It was very easy to do though I have no parking sensors. The hardest part was getting the bumper bolts loose. Stripped a couple of nuts and tore up some knuckles. Those things were on tight. Came out great I think. I have the rear bumper next.

Any opinions on the rough country bumpers? Seem like a great value with included lights and it's half the cost of everyone else.

 

From what I’ve read it’s made with the same gage steel as the others. I talked to a car install guy that said their products are pretty good. All my leds are RC. Seem to be pretty well made.

I have it on the front of mine. You will have to change the fog lights to street legal ones though. I had mine Line-X'ed. I didn't like their rear bumper. I have Road Armor for that one.

 

Line-X is your answer to that.

 

Have you had any functionality issues with the sensors? I was thinking about doing the exact same thing if I was to pick up the Barricade.
