If I remember correctly, Toyota has already said there will be 2 power options. We know one will be the TTV6 and odds are the other is the hybrid. Point being, no diesel.

Or a diesel hybrid. Which would be more fuel efficient the a gas version.

I’m just being optimistic. If the transmission fails because of a heat related issue, I will have bought my last Toyota truck whether it’s under warranty or not.

I thought Mike Sweers was pretty unequivocal when he said "no HD Tundra and no diesel Tundra" in January of this year.

The aftermarket has no bearing on the statement. We’re not getting a diesel Tundra.

By your logic we could get a Tundra powered by a P&W PT6A, I mean it’s theoretically possible to install one if you have enough money.

It could be, but I highly doubt Toyota is going to spend the RandD to develop an all new diesel engine or at least the exhaust system for a diesel engine when all other manufacturers are starting the move away from IC engines right now. With the number of Tundras they sell, it would take them 10 years to make their money back on it.

The crazy thing is the baby Duramax diesel seems to be catching on and quite popular with GM 1/2 tons. The mini Ford power strike does not seem to be that popular and a waste. Ram does not seem to be popular at all as I never see one.

I still think there is a pretty bright future for these smaller diesels.

2 years ago I would have said 0% chance Toyota will ever enter the diesel realm. I have to be honest, a diesel hybrid would make sense and I could see them pulling it off! Still a pretty small chance this upcoming year.

In this instance Toyota already has developed a Diesel engine with all the emissions equipment. The F33A-FTS has a DPF, and DEF, it fits in the platform, it works with the new 10 speed, it will end up being the volume engine option in the Land Cruiser 300 in quite a few markets.

What they haven’t done to our knowledge and probably will not do is certify it for US emissions. Maybe it’s the cost associated with certification, Toyota’s capacity to make the engine in enough volume to support two or three models, or their internal market analysis on how popular the option would be given the cost.

Since Toyota is perpetually behind the curve on what the larger 1/2 ton market buyer wants (witness the tiny market share Tundra has), I am sure the popularity of the GM and Ram diesel 1/2 tons particularly the GM; has not been noticed or at least not in time to do anything about it.

So Toyota has a diesel that will probably work as is, but they’re not bringing it because it wasn’t in the plan 10 years ago when Toyota started the 3rd Gen Tundra R&D (it’s not a 4th Gen, we’re still on 2nd Gen with a mid cycle refresh).

Unfortunately the take rate would be very low I think. The diesel would probably add $3K over the price of the TTV6 gas engine, and a hybrid system another $3-4K.

How many takers would there be for a $6-7K engine option in a 1/2 ton?

    1-2.

You're getting into HD pricing - so you get 3x the truck for the same price. Exact same reason the Titan XD failed.

Well..... I was looking at GMC and Silverado and it looks like it is about $850-$1,000 option to add the 3.0 Duramax over a 5.3. The 6.2 is about a $2k option so the baby Duramax falls right in between. Not as much as upgrade as I would have thought there would be a bigger spread.

Hybrids can get expensive, so who knows.

I think if they could legitimately pull off a diesel hybrid that legitimately gets in the upper 20's MPG there would be quite a few takers.

I drive about 25k miles per year. I averaged 15.8 in the Tundra. Let's say I could get 25 with a diesel. I will spare you my math but factoring in the .40/gallon premium for diesel over 87e10, I would come out to the good with the diesel by about $1,500/year. So in the GM world I would technically pay for the upgrade pretty quickly as long as nothing else breaks, haha.

The 3.0 Duramax is being made available in a lot of GM brands/models. Heck, even the Escalade can be optioned with it. That can help spread the cost of it being a new, unique bespoke engine.

If Toyota offered something similar, the cost spread would be much steeper.

When the 3.0L Duramax first hit the market it was a $2.5K upgrade over the 5.3L if memory serves.

Yeah not sure, but here is GMC AT4 and SLT and it is not much.

I actually know if 1 person that has the 3.0 in the Yukon and they really like it and get insane MPG when set to cruise at 65 on the highway.9F6009BE-F4B6-4607-AB26-5A16DF867E71.jpg
