Hi! I got a new Tundra 2021 Double cab and it’s making a whining noise when accelerating over 10 mph. Then sometimes we hear a clicking sound.

First post needs a hearty welcome. Hearty welcome.
Whining noise could be anything from wheel balance to wheel bearings or any front end supported parts. Good luck

Noises can be difficult to diagnose in person, near impossible on the internet. Can you contact your dealer and ask to test drive a similar truck to compare and see if noise only exists on your truck?

Welcome from LA (Lower Alabama)! Let the warranty take care of it. It may be the only warranty claim you ever have to make on it.

The clicking is the abs self check. It’s normal. Check if your air box is loose and causing the whining, and that it’s not just your wallet at the gas station.

does it go away when you let off the throttle then whine again when you lightly press pedal? My 21 trd pro did that, i thought it was fuel pump or something to do with the throttle. turned out i needed a new rear differential. Fluid was dark and had metal in it. Dealer replaced and no more whine. Truck had 5k on it when replaced. Whined from day one.

Mahalo everyone! Hard thing is that we just can’t take it back to dealership it was shipped to our island and now have to try to diagnose over the phone. Does anyone know how to upload a video to this thread?

That clicking noise is abs. I also freak out when I bought mine. Your truck should be good don’t worry about any noises. Enjoy it

Did you check to see if the exhaust was connected properly or if a strap or something from shipping my have been caught around the shock or drive axle? I would highly recommend a full (by you) inspection of the truck underneath the rear end/bed area. Do any of the rear wheels wobble if you shake them or the truck while parked or while driving? Is one of the wheel center hub caps loose?

That clicking is not the ABS. The ABS does a self-check at 6mph after you start the truck, and you can hear a clunk. It’s only once each time you start the truck.

I’ve heard a stuck parking brake make a clicking noise like your video while driving, but it wasn’t irregular. That loud whirring noise is unsettling.

Does the truck feel weird when driving? Do you feel that loud click in your seat? I’d ask the dealership to recommend someone to take it to on your island. That does not sound normal or healthy.

Thank you! No clicking sound under the seat. Yes, waiting on dealership to direct us. They said we could drive it but it’s too embarrassing to drive. Noise is pretty loud. Thank You so much!

Park the truck on a level surface, Pull the rear differential fill plug and see if there is fluid in it. Kind of sounds like the rear diff whining.

Looking from the back of the truck to the front. Pull this plug and stick your finger in the hole, you should immediately feel oil right at that hole. If you don’t feel any or it’s lower than that hole get some 75-90w gear oil and squirt it in there until it starts to spill out. Let it finish running out wipe it off then put the fill plug back in. 67BAC46B-F274-4417-A83A-21FC8E129FDE.jpg

If it’s dry in there the damage is already done and you’ll probably need a new rear diff.

Thank you for the tip. I will definitely share this with my husband and try tomorrow! The truck is new, less than 40 miles on it. Do you know what would have caused that if that is the case?

I’ve heard of a few Toyota’s coming from factory dry. Most of the fluid is put in by machine and computers. If QC wasn’t done that day who knows. The dealer is suppose to do a delivery check and go through the entire vehicle making sure all fluids are topped off and bolts are torqued. It’s possible because you had it shipped over that didn’t happened.

Oh man! That would suck! I hope QC was done, the truck was at dealership for a couple of weeks before being shipped out. I am no mechanic and will wait for my husband to check. Thank you Gin.Okuma for your help!

If that’s not it, it’s something. That noise is not normal and I would be hesitant to drive it until it’s figured out and fixed.

It’s under warranty is their thought. If it’s the rear diff and it’s dry it can over heat if driven enough and eventually could seize up causing the rear end to lock up and potentially cause an accident. If there is fluid in there I suppose you could drive it until it’s in the shop waiting on back ordered parts. ;)
