The 6.6L has direct injection and a pretty high compression ratio thanks to the DI so I’m not surprised it doesn’t do too bad on fuel. We can make fun of cam in block GM V8’s for being old and outdated, but my one example of a 6.2L (LS3) has proven to be reliable so far, way more powerful than the 3UR-FE and it consistently outperforms the EPA fuel economy ratings on the highway.

My "these guys are gobble-dunking each other over non-Tundra info must ignore most posts" is in full effect. Did I miss anything Tundra specific in all of that GM/Allison talk? Been gone for 2-1/2 days, couldn't make sense of any of it.

The drive shaft from the front diff to the wheel. Doesn’t look like a normal side of a front diff to me. Torsen? Locking? Electric motor?

Hey guys! Long time reader, just decided to join since I am getting close to pulling the trigger if I can find a 2021 platinum or TRD pro . I basically went to every dealer in the Raleigh-Durham area the past 4 days to see 2021s and to hear what they had to say about the 2022. I got different answers about the 2022 but they mostly fell into two categories:

-Some dealers said they expect to get pricing in December and the vehicles to show up march of 2022.
-Some dealers said they expect to get pricing in September and vehicles to show up in dec of 2021.

For 2021s all of them told me that no more build orders are being accepted :(

The GM 6.6 gasser has a 10.8 to 1 compression ratio, wouldn’t call it high based on current standards. Falls about in the middle of the Tundra 5.7L 10.2 to 1 and the GM 6.2L 11.5 to 1.

To me 10.8:1 is a pretty high compression ratio for a truck engine. But I’m still reflexively thinking about it in comparison to port fuel injection engines. Back in 2007 I also thought the 10.2:1 of the 3UR-FE was pretty high for an engine made to work.

We’re still going to have plenty of time to learn about the new Tundra before most of us have a chance to see one in person much less buy one. Between the semi-conductor shortage extending into next year (eventually the new Tundra will get pinched too), dealer “market adjustments”, and enthusiasts that have to have the new shiny thing first I’ll bet it won’t be until spring of 2023 or later until most of us get a chance to test drive one.

In a way that’s not a bad thing, for example I’m ready for a new truck to drive on a regular basis. So if availability and pricing were normal I might be much more likely to become a first model year beta tester. That’s usually not a great place to be, so forcing me to wait isn’t all bad.

I agree. As tempting as driving a new redesigned 2022 Tundra is, I kinda like driving around my paid off current Tundra. My goal is to be 100% dept free so a new vehicle will just have to wiat.

Yep, my truck has been paid off for almost 10 years. Just paid the the SS off earlier this year, and refinanced the house. So there’s an extra $1100 in discretionary income that we have used to pad our bank accounts.

I’m not in a mood to take on a monstrous vehicle payment on what will end up being a $60K+ new truck if I didn’t put money down. I’m keeping the old truck because it’s still useful for us, so there is no trade. At the moment I don’t want to part with cash for a down payment because we’re considering buying a second home, and building wealth is a higher priority than a shiny new truck.

So I’ll cool my jets, and enjoy living vicariously through you guys for a year or two and reading your reports on the new Tundra once they start to become available.

With Toyota not idling the Tundra factory, and many of the competing trucks having supply chain issues, you may even see an uptick in cross shoppers who are already prepared to pay ADM, for the first new truck they can get their hands on. There'll be enormous interest in the new Tundra, much of which will come from other brands

You may be right about that.

There are a lot of people in this country who either have so much money, ADM doesn’t matter, or who are so financially irresponsible that they’ll pay it to have something new and shiny. We can debate the percentage breakdown between the two groups but I’m betting it’s a lot more dumb dumbs than legit rich folks.

Most people I know who have a fair amount of money, and know how to use and manage it are the least likely to spend it on a vehicle marked up way over MSRP. They didn’t become wealthy by being irresponsible and stupid.

I think they've done all the testing they can do before production begins but maybe they can discover some things when beta testers get them on the road. 3rd gen Tacoma owners found a whistling kazoo noise, turned out it was holes in the front LCA. Little things like that I'm surprised after thousands of test miles owners had to find a fix. Third brake light leak also, how do you go thousands of test miles without noticing a wet headliner? I'm waiting a few years to even consider a next gen Sequoia.

I love my 2020 but damn that 22 looks sexy in so many ways

Plus I love all the technology features. I can't believe the Tundras never had a crawl mode like the tacomas and 4runners

As tempting as having the new '22 would be I am happy I relatively stumbled into my '21 Limited DC TRD off-road Army green and traded in my '19 Black Turd Pro for it. I think the nicest Turd out there is the '20 Turd Pro DC army green. I am enjoying the limited's safety, comfort and electronics adjuncts I didn't have with my Turd. If I was younger and actually off-roaded like I used to back in the day I would have had to stay with the Pro. The proof for the longevity and reliability for the new tundra engine won't even truly known for several years. Since I have the epitome of the 3rd generation with a '21 I will be happy for at least a decade IMHO. Only time will tell.

Your truck is a 2nd Gen. No major changes from 2007 to now. Really not sure how you guys think a face lift constitutes a new generation of vehicle.

I'll be doing the same. I've got my 2020 Tundra up for sale for more than what I paid for it. If had some very serious buyers. I'm just waiting for the dealer to give me a number and I'll order the 2022 in white. My current Tundra is black and I won't do that colour again.

The shortage of Tundras on the lot has pushed up the prices nicely.

The front LCA thing...not surprised it made it through without the testers noticing, it was only a sound annoyance, and an easy fix. The third brake light thing maybe could be explained because Toyota seems to do most all of their testing in the desert. Also maybe something on the production line went wrong and it didn't get sealed properly for several thousand vehicles. Both of these problems are not really problems IMO.

The whole transmission programming debacle on the Taco was a huge problem and the truck should have never made it to production like that.

3rd brake light has been a thorn in the side of most makes.

The LCA noise, probably affected by camo initially.

I really hope so. Kind of selfish of me, as I have no interest in another/different truck, but I'd love to see enough of a surge in Toyota's full size truck market to maybe encourage them to make a push toward HD trucks. An HD truck with the Tundra's level of reliability.... well, let's just animate your avatar to express what that'd be like.
