USB port for rear seat and hardwiring your wireless charger.

I did my mod before he created this but i always wanted to hard wire it. The cord is in the center console so its not like anyone can see it but hard wiring would be better. Someone posted about switching out some of the lighter ports with usb ports in their build thread so i looked into it and realized removing the back lighter port would be easy and while i had it apart i could hardwire it.

The first step is to remove the back cover of the center console with your panel tool. You pry up the top to get a hold of it and then pull up to remove it.

After you have the panel off remove the wires from the lighter and unscrew the plastic part that the lighter is attached to so you have a small part to work with.

Now to remove the lighter take a razor and cut the tabs holding the lighter. You can then use a flat head screw driver to remove the bezel that is left from the old plug.

My USB port is a little bigger then the hole so I used a step drill bit to make the hole bigger. If you don't have a step drill bit you could use a dremel or worse comes to worse a razor to make the hole bigger.

I To rerun the usb cable i had to remove the lid from the center console again. This time i lost some screws so now i have to go find a couple of them.

Run the wire inside the hing and out the back.

Use the taps to tap into the power wires for the charging port and then plug the female usb wire into the male.

Zip tie all your extra wires and both sides of the usb so it does not come apart. Put the back, back on the center console the opposite way you took it off. Your done. You now have 2 usb ports in the back to charge your accessories and your wireless charging mod is now hard wired so you dont have any loose wires in the open.

How is that Blue sea usb charger working for you? I am thinking about adding one to the console until I saw a bunch of negative reviews about the charger. Some said doesn't charge as advertised and some saying it flat out did not work at all. Interested in your experience.

So I don't think I'll be installing a USB port in place of the cigarette lighter, but regardless, if you have both the wireless charger and something plugged into the cigarette lighter running at the same time, won't it make the charging for both devices slower? On account of them having to use the same power source?

 

Working fine for me. I don’t use it much but the times I plugged into it I had no issues.

 

Port/wire is 12v. USB port is 5v each. I guess in theory if both back ports are in use and my wireless charger is working we would be 3v short. It will never happen in my use but I guess it’s posible.

 

Added a different type of wireless charger in the front of my console. The unit I bought is a package made for cars/trucks as its very thin, has a non slip ring on top and 3M adhesive to attach the unit. I followed some others to hard wire it into one of the 12V outlets using a 12V to 5V converter wire. Here's what I bought and a picture of it installed:

This was the easiest install I’ve done, use them front and rear! I know they aren’t wireless but they are worth it having not to wire them in!

 

I am about to do the USB change and I tried to remove the back cover but it doesn't seem to want to budge. Is it the same procedure for the back cover that has the cup holder?

I can not say. I do not have the cup holder. You need to pull up not out though on mine so if that is not working open the cup holder and look for screws.

 

Did mine today and I feel it looks great, very easy to do, just had to file out the hole a bit and make a small pigtail extension. I appreciate the time you spent on the write up it made it very easy to do.




Now time to install the tow mirrors.. lol

Now I have to tackle the inside console one, I have a console vault and am hoping I don't have to remove it to get the file inside to enlarge the hole..

If the led light stays on, has it drained your battery?

 

Is the rear charging port constant on or acc?

 

The rear is AC. I ran a wire from the battery to the center console to have constant power. There's also a kit from SET that I used to replace the center console 12v and one to add USB to the back of the console.

 

I’m just looking to replace the rear cigarette plug with a dual usb. No phone charger install. It should be a cut the existing plug out and connect new USB socket?
