Checked the catch can today, nice to keep this oil out of the intake.
    3k miles worth.

Wasn't able to get far. Road closures all over still. What I could see, wasn't looking good at all. Fire took out a lot of good hunting county. 20210828_135014.jpg

I love it, high quality aluminum product. The hoses were just long enough, not short though. I think we all change our oil around 5k but I wouldn't want to go over 6-7k without emptying it.

I just pulled the hose off and stuck a qtip in there. It was pretty dry. Not sure I’d catch much but who knows. Something to ponder

Yeah, mine was pretty dry too.
It's that hot oil vapor that the system collects. There is a fine stainless screen where it gathers until a drop is formed. Pretty cool stuff.

Since we are talking maintenance, what are your plans for the other fluids? Follow the manual or something different?

I’m going to change the diffs and transfer case at 30k miles to get the break-in crap out. Will probably go 50-60k on the next cycle.

Think I’ll dump/fill the tranny at 30k as well. Going to pull a sample first to analyze and see if I need a cooler. The discussion is completely lost here on the forum, so will use data to drive my decision. My guess is the fluid will be fine and can probably extend my next cycle to 50k miles or more.

I’ve never heard a good plan for brake fluid. Dealerships love to fear-monger this one since there is rarely anything about it in the manual. My notes say every 2-3 years or 24,000-36,000 miles. Not sure if that’s from the manual or internet searching. Think I’ll do it at the 3 year mark, which with my current driving will be around 30k.

    Coolant can wait…

I like your plan. I’m going a little longer than I’d like on my brake fluid, but I have only 21K miles and light braking and light towing. 2-3 is a good guideline for light duty.

From reading sport oriented cars with track days, if you a using high temp fluid and aggressive braking you would be doing it every track day….

it really depends upon the vehicle and driving situation imo. When I was riding motorcycles a lot I would change their fluids every 2 years, the fluid got nasty in their brake systems.

I'm that guy that "wastes money" doing maintenance before it due, lol.
Did my diffs and trans case last winter @30k, plan on doing the transmission this winter @40k.
Good plan on the trans data. I need to get a torque pro or something to monitor temps while towing and during drain &fills.

Does one just bleed brakes while topping off until the new fluid works through?

I’m the same way. I usually change fluids to the Severe Use schedule, but my aversion to break-in metals has me start even earlier on the initial change. I actually bought the diff fluid last summer but have been able to hold myself back so far.

I’m going to have the dealership do the tranny and brake fluid. I’ve watched vids on both, but just don’t want to mess with it.

I’ve got a ScanGauge II that works great. My temps get pretty warm but not near the alarm bell.

Yeah, I'm glad I changed my rear diff early. Found the usual metallic sludge and a few shavings from the factory milling.

Does the ScanGauge just plug in to the obd2 and Bluetooth to your phone?

The SG2 plugs into the OBD2 port and has it’s own display. It is wired, so no Bluetooth stuff. There are a lot of solutions now that put a dongle on the OBD and bluetooth to your phone, but I like having a separate system.

Bought it in 2010 and had it updated once. Been a rock-solid system on multiple vehicles.

I flush my brakes every two to three years. You'd be surprised how much water the fluid absorbs over that time.

*Edited to add that mileage isn't important, it's about time.

The port injection is designed to wash the valves with fuel, so they say that isn't needed. But damn that is a lot of oil, your giving me something to think about. What brand is it?

That is the beauty of port injection (and one drawback to direct injection). These motors last forever without an oil catch can, but I still don't like it. On a per-injection basis, it's an insanely trivial amount, but I wonder if under certain conditions (when you're engine is producing a lot) it does impact the combustion cycle a bit...who knows. For $150, it went to the top of my Birthday wish list...but I have to admit I'm a sucker for a new toy and I really wanted one of these on my Ecoboost (didn't want to pay the $400 and risk the CEL's that some people had).

So this weekend I've fixed the fence, confirmed the furnace pump still works (drains the water extracted from the system), cleaned the garage, did a massive prep on the trailer, hit the grocery store and bagel shop (bought a metric ton of bagels for the kids since they start school this week), did a bunch of laundry, hung two black-out blinds in the basement/TV room (oh so awesome), walked the dog twice (4 miles total), read thru the legal crap on our shiny new long-term care insurance, processed two months of mail and few other trivial things I cannot remember. I'm done...

Do you just bleed from the rear brakes forward to flush?

Suck the fluid out of the master cylinder, add new. Then bleed passenger rear, driver rear, passenger front, driver front. Keep the master full after each hub.

Others may do it different, but that is what has worked for me.
