Just a reminder to keep an eye on your bank and credit card accounts.
    I check mine every morning.

I noticed a pending charge on my debit card yesterday for $225.21 to Trip.com.
Called the bank and we went thru the last 4 days of charges and were and weren't mine.
The Trip.com was the only one that wasn't mine.
They told me in the last 3 days, 6 attempts to use that card were declined because of the wrong exp date was given.
Some of these were Disney for $350, Knotts berry farm for $452, American Airlines $650, etc...

If you think about it, if someone has your card number, figuring out the exp date would not be that difficult.
The first 2 numbers are going to be 01 to 12 and the last 2 will be 21 to 28 or so.
I thought you'd have to have the security code on the back of the card to buy online, but guess not..

Anyway, just thought I'd pass that on to the peeps.

    I gotta finish mowing..

This is why I cut up the debit cards as soon as they're sent to us. I don't want to give some jackoff another opportunity to hit the account I use to pay my bills. We keep multiple credit cards. If one of those gets hit, we cancel it and use one of the others until replacement cards come. If I need cash, I walk into the bank.

Also, set up alerts. I get a text or email for any charge billed to any of our cards or accounts. Some of them allow the option to alert on deposits and posted payments.

I have 2 checking accounts, 1 for bills and 1 for general spending.
I think I'll start using one of my credit cards for daily purchases.
    They all have 0 balances.
Just pay them off as soon as the charges post.

This also made me think I should probably turn off over draft protection on that spending account.
I never use it, don't let the accounts go to zero
But if someone did get a hold of the card info, not only could they clean the checking account out, but also anything in the account over draft draws from..
Makes me wonder why I even have over draft??
I think maybe I should just cancel all my over draft setups..:eek2:

My CC company sends me an email as soon as I swipe my card. Easy to spot when someone else tries. Also, I second no debt cards ever. My Credit union says I have to have a debit card to use the ATM's so I siad ok set it for ATM only and they did:)

I had a debit card that I never used for a bank account. I never carry that card with me and never registered it anywhere or have the number entered anywhere. I hid it away somewhere in the house. There was a pending charge on that card for Victoria secret order. I called to tell them it was not me and the charge for declined. No clue how they got the card info as bank said it could have been an inside job (ie. people living with me or have access to my house). Total victim blaming but sure, my wife wanted to buy something and use my card which she don't know where my card was hidden.

I highly recommend adding two factor authentication to all your email and bank account apps/logins. In addition set up both text and email notifications for ALL activity (charges, deposits, transfers). Call it overkill but I've been burned in the past and will never let it happen again.

I work in banking and used to work in a branch/retail environment. I always advised my customers to just use their credit card if they have one, as long as they treat it like a debit card and can be responsible and diligent about paying it off every month. You can usually earn some sort of reward by using a credit card, and if there is ever fraud it's much less disturbing to deal with. Debit card fraud takes cash straight out of your checking account, and while you're still protected, the process to get your money back is usually longer and takes more effort. Credit card fraud doesn't involve taking any money out of your account and is generally instantly resolved.

I got hit recently by a gas station credit card skimmer. I now use Apple Pay anytime it’s available.

I use CC to pay for everything and pay it off the day before the statement closes to avoid interest. This also keeps the CC company "happy" in keeping the accounting open and increasing my limit every 6 months even with a zero balance. All cards are linked to my phone to let me know of any charge.
Debit card is only used to pull cash from an in network ATM if I need it and the bank is closed.

My cards are setup so that if suspicious activity occurs the card gets locked and a text message is sent to me asking to verify. If I reply to the text as valid, the card is immediately unlocked. It has worked out well and I like the process.

We stopped using our debit card for anything other than ATMs after the 2nd time our account got compromised and it took weeks for our money to get refunded.

We're going on 10 years with AMEX and the only issue we had was handled within 24 hours and a new card was there within a couple days.

Debit card is for atms only. And Costco since they don’t take Amex.

I use an Amex for everything else. Literally everything else. Every bill and purchase goes on that card with the exception of my mortgage.

I used a debit card from a major bank to purchase fuel at a reputable gas station. Shortly thereafter I ended up with a bogus debit on my account.
The bank made good on it straight away, but I'm done with the debit card ~ I had it canceled.
Then I had another issue with a major credit card company. I have no idea how these scammers got ahold of my account number etc.
Again, the card company made good on the bogus charges, I had them issue a new card with a new account number.
The thieves are becoming more and more sophisticated every day. Lucky for me I had alerts on all my accounts and dealt with the issues right away.

    Your mileage may vary . . .

I suggest locking your credit as well. I use all three bureau apps and it’s seem less.

I almost exclusively use my credit card for EVERYTHING. I keep about $200 in my checking account and the rest in savings. When I make a purchase, I pull from savings and pay off the card.
The bank is going to care more about THEIR money than YOUR money if the information gets stolen.

We have debit/credit cards and for years I've been entering the 4 digit PIN when making a purchase. I recently learned unless you are getting cash back one simply omits the PIN and just press enter. Yeah, I'm a slow learner.

Unless you have a Target Red Debit card. Then you have to do the pin every freaking time!

Most of my bank accounts and credit cards have activity notification so I’ll get an email of the amount charged or withdrawn the day it happens.

Also, no debit cards or automatic overdraw protection to protect the savings account. Can’t contest a debit card since there’s no protection there unless you can prove it. (I assume)
